Traps?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:10 pm

Any word yet on whether players will be able to create, set, possibly disarm+collect them this time around?
Anyone for/against them for any particular reason?

I think it'd really improve rogue/hunter sort of character's gameplay, and make taking down large/powerful enemies a little easier assuming you see them before they see you.
Trip wires, foothold traps, possibly caltrops, just simple stuff the player could reasonably carry around. Magical traps(only one active at any time to prevent cheese) would be interesting as well.

Well, there are spells that works like traps based on the Combat article by GameInformer.

I don't know about normal traps though, in the Dutch cover story, it said there will be "more traps and puzzles", though they likely just meant dungeon traps and such.
Disarming traps will definately happen, it was present in Fallout 3, why not have it in Skyrim?

But to be honest, I've never used any ability to set traps in RPGs that had them, they never seemed like a good idea. If anyone can recommend me an RPG or game where traps can be fun to use and interesting, please do.

I don't mind if we can't set traps. I would like if a high Security skill allowed you to spot traps more easily, though, rather than relying on the player's vision.

Subjective question, but in my opinion, Neverwinter Nights.

Nah, having to rely on vision is challenging and fun. Leave it the way it is... disarming traps on the other hand could have influence by the security skill.

@Vamphaery: I knew someone would say that, I've played through NWN several times, but never found any joy in using traps... I think the only game I've played that used traps decent was Evil Genius, and that isnt an RPG;

Lol well you asked. You could have said, "I didn't enjoy them in NWN incidentally, so don't recommend that." Hence my statement that the question is subjective.

My personal favorite game that included various traps was Bioshock, although they were different kinds than you'd be using in a less technological setting.

I liked traps in Nox. Of course, action/adventure game =/= sandbox RPG.

Hunters use traps in WoW and they are very useful (although they are NOT fun).

The problem with traps in most games is that we are always going into someone else's place to do our combat. Since the enemies never come to us, we have no real application for traps (as they are used to prevent access, not further it).

What would be really cool is if Bethesda expanded upon defensive gameplay where enemies come to you and you have to prevent them from getting through.

In TES seems like it'd be simple to set up a trap, use a ranged weapon or spell, and lure the enemy right into it when they come after you. The main thing is just not being seen before they see you.

Because we can use magic to set rune traps, I would like to see a high level Security perk that allows the player to trap doors and containers.

Dragon Age: Origins did a pretty good job with traps.
