Traveling Merchant?

Post » Tue Oct 04, 2011 3:15 pm

I just thought of an interesting RP character... What if you RP'd a travelling merchant that speciallized in all of the crafting skills (Blacksmithing, alchemy, enchanting), and then just traveled working these professions and making money? The character would also be specialized in mercantile obviously, and just go around conducting business and become a tycoon? You could go even further and give them a little thievery skill such as pickpocket, and some skill with the dagger (Sneak specializations), to make them a bit combatable as well.

What do you think? I might try it sometime.

Thats actually an interesting idea. My ideal traveling merchant would have all the crafting skills, mercantile, and maybe speech. I would also have the one handed skill incase I run into trouble wile traveling. I would just whip out my dagger and kill the little SOBs. I think that this could potentially bring in a lot of gold. Kudos for the neat idea!

Lets hear you say that when that little SOB is a dragon...

Anyways great idea, i may do that for one of my play through. You can hire guards (Or some sort of person) so to add to the role play only give your guy a dagger, and hire guards to protect you... this would be fun.

That would be very fun, with a traveling caravan and hired guards. I picture as more of a "fleets of the desert" type thing, but it would work for skyrim. Only wish there would be even more large towns, thins to buy and sell, and a larger map so travel would be much longer and more costly(No fast travel). Stocking would be important and buying in surplus to sell in demand would be smart.

Can you hire guards? Did they confirm that? If so that would be awesome for a traveling merchant!

What about the flip side, befriend a traveling merchant and travel with them as their guard. You wouldn't get paid for it but might lead to some interesting encounters.

Edit: typo

Edit: Can't find it, so ignore this.

It would be cool if NPCs could know you're this character and people would see you and ask if you can make something and sell it too them. Mod please

Only problem is unlike in MMO's they do not live in the same world.

I so would enjoy a merchant character. Dump-stat all the perks into Speechcraft, while of course dabbling in other skill just to stay alive in this crazyass world. Do my best to pick all the persuasion-based dialogue in game. End up some sort of battlesmith :)

OP you've just described the base idea for one of my character ideas: Gavin Hedd! :D

Gavin will literally just run off to whatever major city he finds first. He'll be a fraidy-cat I think! :bolt: He'll be more interested in picking flowers and tending a garden of some sort than fighting; matter of fact, he'll be a svcky fighter, probably. He will be some sort of an importer/exporter I think, but I'm not sure how this will work out.

Oh, and he's gonna be a total flaming homosixual, too. A total dandy, a total fop. Gavin Hedd will wear the most finely woven-tailored clothing, focus on honing his import/export trade, and scope out other dudes. I'm wondering if he'll have to be in the closet, though, like if he'll get teased or rough-housed for being gay. We shall see.

Don't scratch that out just yet. I think I remember reading something about being able to pay NPC's to come along with you on quests, along with friends doing it for free. I'm not positive though, and even if I did actually read that, it could be complete B.S.

Edit: @ OP.

That is a really good idea and I might just steal it. I didn't really go all out RP in Oblivion; I simply had a few characters throughout the years that ended up doing everything. I really want to try to truly RP this time around though.

That depends on the economy system. Because you could just seel everything to the guy next to you from the workbench...

But, see now people! This is why I was so pissed a month ago when we found out you could only travel with one companion at a time. It makes it more difficult for RPers who want to RP a group, like an orc band, or a bandit group, or like the OP mentions, a merchant (with a travelling caravan).

And I'm an xbox 360 gamer, so don't even mention mods to me.
