Traveling

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:07 pm

With regard to traveling around the the world of Skyrim, I would very much like to see more options then just fast travel or walking like we had in Oblivion.
In Morrowind you could use boats (Not viable for Skyrim in general, however a few boats to take you up and down the coast would be great).
Also you used Silt Striders for transport across land.

Now I would love to see a return of this sort of travel. So, Mammoths as the new Silt Striders anyone?

This might seem a very obsolete form of travel with the introduction of fast travel, why pay when you can just click? However it does provide a more immersible game with little effort on the development/implementation side plus some real benefits as well. In Oblivion you couldn't fast travel when you where over-encumbered, I am thinking it will be the same with Skyrim, but you could travel over-encumbered across the map on a mammoth.

Ideas?

I'd really like to see real time "fast travel" like the griffins and trains in WoW. probably the only thing i really liked in that game

I want to hunt Mammoths, with my forged bow, deep in the snowy mountains, breath lingering in the air,
dynamic snow falling around me, the lost Mammoth Calls to its Herd.....Sorry. Got carried Away.

But yeah, use it as a pack animal and steed. Help in battle and such. It'd be pretty cool.

Honestly though it would be cool to have a fast travel system like that of morrowind I think I would much prefer the lazymans option of fast travel pretty much identical to that of Oblivion. That way players can choose to move about quickly or if you wish to take time and explore the world around you, you can travel by foot. Or dragon (Ha, Joke, I know, I know)

Indeed, don't get rid of fast travel at all! Just have the option there of alternative travel like mammoths/boats etc for a more immersive game, after all this is a role playing game.

I think in morrowind the point of hulking silt striders were that being so big no beast could attack them. In Skyrim I think there is a beast tipe that could attack an kill a mamoot easilly...

What I mean is that supposing they put a immersing travelling system, Using a huge (and easilly seing) beast for it could not be the best move.

Please, oh please, but I know they won't because they hardly ever decide to implement sick ideas like that (not trying to hate). I'd love to see boats out on the water, fishing, some longboats carrying troops, or just transports for the common folk, cargo, etc. Mammoths would be awesome to ride. Seeing horses with packs attached to the saddles would be cool too, a la traveling adventurer/merchant.

But there is a difference between immersion and realism, introduction of something other then walk or click like mammoth travel (eg silt striders) would provide a lot more immersion for the RGP, plus, dragons have only just started to appear in skyrim, everything pre-dragon that they might have like mammoth travel would still be around, should we get rid of flocks of sheep etc if we go down the realism side?

I'd be fine with regular Oblivion-style fast travel if it has random monster encounters. However, if you're smart, a Morrowind-style fast travel system can be just as convenient as Oblivion-style fast travel - you just have to put a little thought into it, which can be rewarding. Suppose you need to move repeatedly between a remote location (such as a dungeon) and a city. You cast Mark in the remote location, cast Divine Intervention to get to the nearest town, travel to your target city by mammoths or boats, cast Recall to get back to the remote location, and repeat as much as you want. The only "inconvenience" would be walking from the Imperial temple to the mammoth - and come on, we have sprinting now.

i wouldn't mind having mounts. plus, if we had different types of mounts, it could affect how quickly fast travel happens, i.e. the faster the animal, the quicker the fast travel. but, then you have to weigh speed against carrying cap. Mammoth = lots of room, slow speed. Horse = middle of the road on both. some type of slick animal = little carrying cap, but really fast speed.

I was thinking more like this:

However, what would be really cool is a medium travel option, where you can just kick back, relax, and take in the scenery while someone else drives. That is, a travel option where you ride something through the game world.

morrowind had it right with travel. the world is a dangerous place. being able to travel by silt strider with the imperial legion patrolling the roads, they had forts near several key cities made sense. in oblivion NPCs walk the roads and often were killed. the world would empty if everybody traveled. and morrowind had teleportation.

i like levitation and teleportation.

I would like to see a system similar to Red Dead Redemption. In RDR, you could ride the train or stagecoach, and you could choose whether to skip to your destination or just ride out the trip to your destination and watch the land pass by. If you could ride wooly mammoths like silt striders, how cool would it be to have the option of just relaxing as you are riding across the beautiful landscape.

Another idea: Perhaps the fast travel system will be tied to the dragon shout system. Since there is a dragon shout to call a dragon, perhaps you can also use this as a fast travel system. Considering you have a meter for dragon shouts, one would have to be frugal with its usage.

this would be awesome. I think Rockstar really nailed what travel should be. you could do this is for awhile in their games.

It should definately remain an option like a hardcoe mode akin to new vegas where fast travel is disabled and you have to worry about food etc.

You know what will be cool? Remember GTAIV/RDR where you could sit in a taxi/cart and watch the view as you sit back? And you could press X to skip it? Yeah, I'd like something similar to that in Skyrim - maybe with a horse or some original form of transport... baby dragon?? lol

Could be great.

Travel services need to be in the world, not just for an alternative to fast travel that is more immersive...
but also because they add something to the world. A town should have some sort of transportation. Whether it's boats, caravans or TES-unique stuff like mammoths. It builds up the believability of the towns and adding something to the infrastructure of Skyrim.
Mammoths would be awesome, because that would be something that you can specifically relate to Skyrim... like Silt Striders for Morrowind.

Could be cool.

It's not something I'd like to do often though, because fast travel is meant to be fast travel, after all, both for OB and MW styles.
But still, it would be cool. One day you're bored you can get on the transportation system-thing and watch the landscapes go by. What would really really awesome if some random encounters happened from time to time.
Like an ambush from enemies. That would awesome.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of fast travel though?

Nonetheless, neat idea. I like it. :tops:

Look, it's all very well using them as transport, but just imagine jousting with them. Much more fun.
