Treasure Trove

Post » Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:02 pm

I'm just curious... What's a nice, fatty, easy, treasure heavy dungeon?

I have SI and KotN. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on more amber arrow matrices. Other than that, I'm just lookin' for some good or interesting loot. Any suggestions?

Honestly I can't say that there is any one dungeon that really outshines the others. I will say that bandit dungeons are generally better than marauder dungeons as the loot has a better value to weight ratio seeing as they wear light armor. Also Conjurer dungeons are good for the same reason as they have scrolls and alchemy equipment you can sell. I can't really say whether conjurer dungeons are better or worse than bandit dungeons though.

What about that one Dungeon that is full of the bandits that fight each other? You can basically go in there and come back out with enough loot to buy pretty much anything you want. Unfortunately, it's been a few years since I last played, so I can not remember the name of the Dungeon, just that it was near one of those small village settlements.

Yeah, that's Fort Nikel. It hasn't paid off in terms of good treasure lately though. Bear in mind I'm level 39+. I don't even pick up most magic items any more. Not even to sell.

I've found some good stuff at Milchar in Mania. Amulet of Swords and Amulet of Axes for example, both from there. Most stuff is just blah at this point, though.

Rockmilk cave is probably the best know dungeons where enemies fight each other.
Rockmilk cave is also the best source of black bows; they can be sold for 100 gold each to the count after completing the Mazora the orc quests.

However bandits and marauders do not drop expensive loot until later in the game then they start using high end equipment, creature dungeons has better chance of dropping magical items that can be pretty expensive.

Except for this just travel around and check dungeons, as other says bandits pays best at high level.

In general, the loot is leveled, and pretty well scattered around. The lists used will vary the types of loot available, so if you're looking for light armor items, check Bandit locations, Marauders for Heavy, and so on, but the values (what you can get by selling it, not what it's tagged) of what you get will be fairly even across the board.

Since the vendors don't sell the "best" weapons, armor etc. the gold you get isn't actually all that useful after a while, so you're much more likely to be hunting a specific type of gear and therefore going to the "homes" of those who use them. Amber/Madness are a bit of an exception, as you do need to involve the vendor, but the matrices and materials are in random loot in Mania and Dementia respectively. There are no special places for the Matrices, any container/enemy with random content can have them.

Due to level scaling and randomized loot, I don't think there are really any specific locations where the best loot can be found. There's places like Rockmilk Cave where there's easier loot available (for example, enemies that kill each other so you don't have to), but similar loot can be found in just about any location in the same "category" (ie fort, mine, Aylied ruin, etc).

Except for special items like the Black Bows, which are a surprisingly good source of income.

Gotcha.

Thanks, gang. And yeah, we long ago surpassed the "I need money" stage. We're after good gear now. Not cash. I have gold coming out of my butt and nothing to spend it on. Hell, I apparently can't even buy basic mushrooms with all my dragon hordes of coins.

I'm trying to find good equipment.

Reflection stuff, specifically.

Have you already got http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Spell_Breaker? Probably the best way of upping that Reflect spell percentage, and it's always found the same way. If you don't mind having to hunt for it, the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Mundane_Ring#Mundane_Ring is also great.

Congrats on getting past the 'I need money' stage. With time, I'm sure you'll get past the 'gotta have good gear' stage also. :foodndrink:

We grabbed up Spell Breaker last night. Bummer that it was heavy armor, but whatever.

I don't have a mundane ring, but I have an Amulet of swords and some other odds and ends.

I guess I should go whack that priest a few times. That's okay with me actually... I like shopping and since they don't fight...

Thanks, guys. I'll let you know how it goes.

Are you wanting to reflect spells or physical damage, or both? The problem you'll potentially run into is that you can get multiple items for the same equipment slot, and not be able to use them at the same time - Amulet of Axes / Necklace of Swords is one pair, Spellbreaker / Escutcheon of Chorrol another. Only two rings can also be a problem if you want Mundane + Iron Fist + something else.

At least the shields in Oblivion give their magical benefits when equipped but unused, even though the base defense only counts when in hand.

So if I have a shield, but am using my bow, I won't get the benefits of the shield, right?

Likewise if I am holding the shield but I'm not using it to defend, it still functions, correct?

And yeah, I'm running into some of that "slot frustration." I have both amulets that you mentioned for example.

If you have a shield 'equipped' but are using a two hander (like a bow), you don't get any armor rating or blocking (or armor penalty) from the shield. You WILL however get the benefit of any enchantment on the shield.

If, for example, you wanted to be a staff-using mage with no armor so your spells are 100% effective, could 'equip' a shield and get an additional enchanting slot.

Rockmilk Cave is good for 'Basic' Equipment only! There is no Amber in Rockmilk. I think that Rockmilk is way overrated until later levels, and that's when you don't really need the help.

For Amber, just have to keep killing stuff in SI. Best place to look might be around the Perfect Order things that keep popping up.

I hit a Grand Ring of Shadows (30% chameleon) and a Mundane Ring. I found the Mundane ring in Fort Virtue (which is bugged, sadly), and I think I hit the Grand Shadow ring in... Um... Fort Empire.

I also found a glass shield of mirrors, perhaps in Fort Homestead.

Anyway, it's going really well lately - the treasure hunting I mean.

After a while the hunting becomes more fun than the loot. I've had several instances of carrying nothing out of a dungeon and not regretting going in.

Heh, my character is unable to ever raise strength (permanently at base of 30), so she is familiar with happily carrying no loot out of dungeons except gold coins, scrolls and arrows. :)
