Perhaps it is a wizard, waiting in ambush for a squirrel that stole her favorite feminine napkin. Wonder if she would respond to my questions?

Placement algorithm? All of the placement is done by a person. They said none of the game is autogenerated. And I really dont mind. I have seen tree's growing on rocky barren cliffs before with no more than 2 ft of soil under them. It's possible. And this is by a lack, with grass. :/

Aye, but this is Skyrim and there are no female wizards, only FOUL WITCHES

I wish they wouldn't bend the truth like that. What they are probably doing is creating palette sets, and they used them to "paint" models onto the surface. I highly doubt they go trough forests and place each bush and tree by hand.

It's basically controlled auto-generation.

It's a minor problem, but yea.. it really is weird to see a tree growing out of a boulder. Shame on all you mockers!

As this particular scene is quite raggedy for other reasons, I hope to never see it in the finished product, regardless.

^ Yeah, I imagine it was from them playing around with different waterfall variations for the water or something. I think I remember someone saying it was a couple years old?

Trees are very good at finding the soil and nutrients it needs to survive. The forest is a very complex system that is constantly changing, and to replicate a realistic placement of trees can be tricky if not overwhelming. As long as the whole tree is not floating above the ground, I'm fine. But, to have these elements placed in a way that would complement the desired atmosphere without being too obvious would be ideal, and that's probably what's most important for a good forest within a game. Compared to Oblivion I would like to see a much greater variety in size and spacing.

is it fact that trees in TES are identical to trees in real life?

Taproot :)

Roots go directly down. Maybe the soil in skyrim or nirn is far different than earths?

Your argument is moot unless you know more about the soil.

Yes, but what is not a fact is the perception that that tree has no/inadequate roots. It could be doing any number of things that are out of sight. Kinda like real life.

It makes me sad that people think you'd have to be a botanist to know where a tree can and can't grow. :sadvaultboy:

It makes me sad that you would run away from civilization rather than try to educate it.

Hello!

I noticed a problem in a screenshot I saw.

http://betacache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2011/02/skyrim6.jpg

See that tree, just to the left of the waterfall? It doesn't have nearly enough soil to reach that size. Its taproot should be several feet long, but it doesn't seem to have one. It's also missing the horizontal width of soil necessary for its spreaders. I know it shouldn't come as a surprise that trees need soil to grow. Surely some check could be added to the tree placement algorithm that would make sure they actually do have the appropriate depth of soil for their size? It really breaks immersion to have trees crammed in random places where they couldn't possibly survive.

Thanks for the consideration!

I find your nitpicking over such things, quite laughable. I will agree that the subtle, sarcastic, mocking undertones of your post(whether intentional or not) go far deeper than the roots of that particular tree.

All joking aside, however, it is a good point. That tree would realistically not have grown there like that, but if your concerns are in any way serious, I would say to you, that you need to try and see the forest through the trees my friend. :D

(Note: This is not serious.)
Bad news: Skyrim is delayed for four months as Bethesda hires a team of botanists to inspect the landscape's trees. The concern was just too pressing!

I've seen trees growing sideways and then up off the side of cliffs by rivers. No they don't look perfect or unbent like that but I'm not worried about it. If this is serious it really does prove how you cannot please everyone though.

Thankyou. I totally would have believed you if you hadn't of said that first bit.
