Trespassing and using other people's beds

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:10 pm

One thing I disliked in Oblivion was that trespassing would prevent you from waiting in a house, and that owned beds could not be slept in, even if it's owner was dead or not around.

What I want is that when you enter a house, you will get a small message on the top of your screen telling you that you are trespassing. While trespassing you are able to wait, but may be interrupted if the owner NPC, or another NPC that makes sense finds you (just like a creature would interrupt your resting in Morrowind). Sleeping in an owned bed could work the same way, if you get caught your sleep will be interrupted and the NPC will call the guards.

When attempting to wait or rest in an owned house/bed, there should be a message in the rest/wait menu telling you that you are trespassing, or sleeping in someone elses bed. This should, however, not stop you from doing it.

If the owner NPC is dead, then you can use his house without being stopped by an owner that's no longer around.

What do you think about this?

That was a bit annoying. Still it's a funny concept. Someone comes home from a hard day's work in the fields and there's some %&@#!@! sleeping in their bed. I'd be pissed.

It might negate the need to save up and buy your own house or be part of a faction, but, hey, it's a roleplaying game and people should be free to play a creepy Goldilocks-style tresspasser.

It makes sense you'd be able to sleep in an empty bed when no-one's to stop you. So yes, I agree.

Considering that we have learned if you kill a shopkeeper his relative inherits the shop, I'm guessing that if you kill the owner of a house, it's possible you might have to whack a couple relatives as well before you are free and clear :whistling:

Or, to expand on that a little:

A farmer's wife is very sleepy from shopping all day and wants to go to bed. She goes upstairs to the bedroom and finds someone already sleeping there. She assumes her husband must have returned early and just goes to sleep. Only then the farmer returns from a hard day's work in the fields and finds someone else sleeping in the same bed as his wife!

But yeah, it was a bit odd that I was not allowed to sleep in an 'owned' bed. If I want to sleep somewhere, I should be able to. The consequences (if any) should be dealth with later.

That's basically my take on sleeping in other peoples beds. But also if you continue to sleep in the dead person's house or sleep there too long then the guards will investigate and catch you and then also charge you with the murder of the owner of that house.

Lol, quite the controversy that would cause.

That would make sense. If you use the house freely like it was your own afterwards it would kind of remove the point in buying one for yourself.

The game could maybe let you buy a house that has been without an owner for too long (30 in-game days, maybe?).
It would make sense that someone new would move in after a while, if not the player, maybe a new NPC.

Ok yeah. Here's another one though. Actually you know what, never mind. This will quickly descend into something that will just upset those in this forum with a weak stomach. Agreed though. Should be allowed and if you are beaten in your sleep, that's just what you get.

What's to stop them from assassinating you. Would a message appear while you're sleeping saying "You've just been assassinated, good bye"

Yeah, make it kinda like when you forget that your stage 1 vampire and you sleep outside on a bedroll and then you hear the death song half way through the sleep lol.

Like in Daggerfall? Resting in a town would cause every guard on Nirn to attack you Halt! Halt! Halt! Halt!

But you should be able to sleep. If somebody sees you, then you get woken up. If they don't see you, then no harm done.

Nah, thanks to your ninja reflexes you'd instantly spring out of bed before they have a chance to assassinate you. I'm thinking back on how the assassins in Morrowind were so noisy that not a single one could get near me without waking me up. :P

I thought it was hilarious as to when my wood elf killed rufio and then she slept in his bed after she killed him, that night lucien Lachance found the place deemed secure, :chaos:

I wish we could do that with every bed :toughninja:

Drink a lot of mead then go stumbling into a strange house and spoon some elf in their bed. Then get a severely rude awakening with a club after you pass out?

You break into a house. You sleep in their bed. Someone wakes you. It's a 7 foot tall, 450 lb Nord. He grunts, and says, "Goldilocks would be UNWISE to sleep in papa bears bed..."

if you have a weak character, guards will stop you from trespassing and using other peoples beds by killing you if caught. if you have a powerful character, it is no problem at all, you can take care of the guards yourself if caught, and use the home owners beds

Probably yeah. Even if you are the famous Dovahkiin, the guards will still treat you like Criminal Scum for the slightest offense

Let's hope they fixed that though, you don't treat the Hero of Kvatch/Champion of Cyrodiil/Guild Master like scum for stealing a spoon :shakehead:
