Tried Mass Effect

Post » Thu Dec 09, 2010 7:39 pm

I have been playing Fallout 3 ALOT and have loved it. RPG's are my favorite game type, so naturally I am interested in Mass Effect, which has gotten great reviews, players love it etc..
So I head to gamestop and pick up the first one for 20 bucks. I pop it in and start the game.....

Within an hour im playing Fallout 3 again :fallout:

Has anybody else attempted another popular RPG and then promptly ran right back to Fallout?

Mass Effect 1 had a pretty slow beginning, and a lot of the core RPG mechanics are quite different than F3's, such as the companion system, the leveling system, the class system, and the equipment/inventory mechanics. If you take the time to build a character and follow that character through, you'll find that it's actually a good game. Plus it sets you up for ME2, which was a great game that fixed some of ME1's biggest problems. I recommend that you try it again. F3 is a great game of course, one of the best for the 360 (which is the console I use to play it). But it's certainly not without its own flaws, and I'm sure there are many longtime ME players who had a tough time adjusting to F3's gameplay as well.

I'm pretty picky about which games I buy, usually only picking up surefire successes after reading reviews and previews from reliable sources, and watching trailers and developer interviews. So I don't know if I've ever really been disappointed in a game I've bought, just because I do so much research before I decide to buy, that I already know enough about the game to know whether I'll like it.

ME2 IS a FPS, not a RPG. I enjoyed ME2 immensely, and have played it through several times. It's a shooter, is the bottom line. There is a definite ending, and the way forward is always very linear. While there are certainly weapon and power options, they pale in comparison to the options you will find in any RPG, at least in my experience.

ME2 doesn't have a definite ending. Even if it did, that wouldn't make it less of an RPG. Not arguing that is entirely an RPG. Just saying.

I had the same problem with Bioshock.

I looked at trailers, game play videos, played the demo (a few times) and read reviews. It all seemed good enough, so I bought the game. I've played it for maybe, seven hours. Fallout 3 just has some kind of grip on me, and I can't leave the game.

I'm currently just going to try and finish Bioshock, sell it and try the Killzone series or something.

Mass effect 2 is actually the only game I managed to play through a couple of times before returning to Fallout. Mostly because I really loved Mass Effect 1 a couple of years ago. As for if it's a RPG or not, I would describe it more as an interactive movie. But that doesn't really matter, because a good game is a good game.

On the other hand I have collected quite a few games that I played for only an hour or two before returning to Fallout. Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, Alpha Protocol to name a few. I still plan on giving them a chance one day, but with FNV on the way I don't know when that will be.

Fallout 3 has a lot of faults, other games only have one fault, they're not Fallout 3 :fallout:

Nah actually the opposite. I was deep in my first playthrough of Fallout 3 when I got ME... long story short I finished it in like 3 days picked up ME 2 and proceeded to play both games though twice before i had the desire to play fallout 3 again.

Mass Effect is a good game but it takes a while to get into. It is a bit dry, especially at the beginning. The second installment is much richer.

Like fallout, you get to make choices with consequences, and those consequences carry through to Mass effect 2, which is great.

I had exactly this experience with Assassins Guild (the one based in Renaissance Italy). It seems as if it SHOULD be a game I'd love, but I was put off by the "you've failed this quest, go back and try again" (who the hell cares if I can't climb up a church as fast as my brother anyway?)

Should I give it another go?

Yes. Definitely give it another go. Its one of my all time favorites. It's Assassins Creed II, by the way. :P

I don't have this feeling with Fallout 3, but I do have it with TES: IV Oblivion.

To the OP.
Give Mass Effect a good shake. I've played through at least 9 times. There is a deep rich story, Great RPG elements, Immersion into alien societies, and (I don't care what anyone else says) beautiful planet exploration. You just have to get through the the bit on the Citadel that sets up the story, and the Traverse is yours.
ME2 is a great game, that as noted before, is more like an FPS interactive movie with RPG elements (5 Playthroughs). The story is faster paced and the combat system has been streamlined. However it is missing the same atmosphere and exploration of the first one (planetary exploration consists of sitting at a scanner and dropping probes).
That said, Almost every other game I've played this year has been dropped after a few hours to go back to FO3, ME1, or ME2. Includes Halo, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Oblivion, FF13, Lego Games, etc...

I bought FIFA11 the other day, mainly out of it being a yearly ritual more than anything else. I still haven't taken it out of its plastic wrapper and I'm just beginning my second Fallout 3 playthrough.

Does that count? :fallout:

Yeah, definitely. Although if you haven't played AC1, do that first. Im sure it's pretty cheap now, and you'll really enjoy 2 a lot more once you know the backstory. Trust me, if you get into it, you'll absolutely love it. The only thing wrong with it is that it has virtually no replay value. You play it once, maybe twice, enjoy the hell out of it, and then it just collects dust for the rest of its life.

Yes. Like Witcher or Drakensang or Risen.

I think those are RPGs. And I disagree with the statement above that Mass Effect 2 is not an RPG. I think it definitely is. Probably more of an RPG than Fallout 3 in fact. Which is not to say it's a better game, I just think it's more of a RPG.

I didn't feel the need to run back to Fallout 3 with Mass Effect 2. My sequence was Oblivion for upteenth number of times, then Mass Effect 2 completely to the end twice, then Fallout 3 again.

That said it's pretty certain that Fallout 3 is a much bigger and absorbing game than Mass Effect 2.

Yeah I've had a similar experience. I had just recently started playing FO3 when a friend let me borrow his Fable 2. I played for about 4-5 hours total before I stopped and gave it back. The first few months of FO3 just had a grip on me like cement glue that nothing else could pull me away from. Oddly enough about a year after buying FO3 I bought Fable 2 for myself and loved it.

I also played Mass Effect, but after I had beaten FO3. It was alright, but didn't like it enough to pick up ME2. Maybe if it ends up in the bargain bin like the first did I will.

Mass Effect2 dose not have to be a shooter. You can kill a enemy without shooting a bullet. I do like Mass Effect 2 and 1. They both good games but with faults like what Fallout3 has. Gee I miss those lifts and the Mako and the exploration. Least they improve the inventory and the game play some what. With Mass Effect I play all classes both male and female so I won't get bored by it.

Try The Witcher its good. Note the score playing at the background. To me its sweet. The Witcher2 coming out in March. It looks sweet so far.

Update.

I don't know try Boarderlands. I know its a bit long in the tooth and the finish of vanilla game its only sour point but with the 4 dlc's they have, you be having a hard time getting off it.

I started with morrowind and never really got far into the main quest before restarting with a new character. I then got oblivion and played it with the same results. With both games I could never stick with one character. Once I got fallout 3 after a few initial files where I made some mistakes while learning the ropes I made my most successful character based on what I like the most, which is being heavily armored and packing major firepower. My resulting character was a human tank that could take a major beating and dish one out as well. Fallout 3 is probably the best game I ever played. :fallout:

I tried the witcher (was on offer dirt cheap on steam at the time) but I ended up going back to FO3 after 5 hrs ish. I had high hopes for it but probably didn't give the game long enough. Also tried FO1 but ended up putting that down after a few hours as well, both times coming back to FO3. .

I'm hoping to give both of these another good try in future (and pick up the Mass Effect games at some point), but when exactly I don't know, Vegas might take up a lot of spare time until X-mas!

Borderlands on the other hand was good fun and kept me keen till the end, although Borderlands has a co-op element to it which FO3 doesn't have. I think the playing with friends and chatting with mic's adds to the Borderlands gameplay as well. If you have freinds that are interested in Borderlands I would certainly recommend it :)
