Trolls vs Dragons

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:18 pm

And the answer is: Trolls, Frost Trolls to be more exact... Why are Trolls in general better than Dragons??? I see alot of people saying that certain enemies are locked at certain levels which is fine but these damned trolls are way too strong in this game and is what made me hate exploring at low levels and even now at a high level I still like exploring do to past events, just how I am. But seriously Trolls are stronger than Dragons, well regular Dragons up to Frost and Flame Dragons but that still is waaay to strong. Just some nit picking... Still enjoying the game although it seems as if I've done everything and exploring is the last thing I can truely do.

Trolls were pretty tough at low levels. Mid level 30's or so, they get pretty easy, even Frost Trolls aren't a problem. I agree though, regular dragons are just way too weak. I know they're not meant to be uber powerful but a 30ft reptile shouldn't be killed so easily by a giant wielding a club.

I killed my first frost troll with a lvl 7 paladin (sword, board and healing) but it took me about 10 minutes and a lot of hit-n-run tactics.

Seriously I leveled up 2 times during this fight. When the troll fell dead I was level 9.

I don't think they're stronger, just more active in battle. Unless you're running, you don't have time to recover in a fight with trolls, whereas you've got several breaks in a dragon fight. It gets rough in certain areas where you can get attacked by 2 or 3 trolls at the same time when you're at too low a level, like in Labyrinthian. My Battlemage found that area accidentally on my first playthrough at around lvl 10 and barely made it out alive without a kill. Knowing what I was in for, I took my new lvl 11 mage in there a couple of days ago, and was barely able to take out all the trolls, but he was on the run the whole time, while Lydia was constantly taking a knee.

I've never had an epic dragon fight. Every time, the dragon flies overhead until I eventually manage to hit it with an arrow. Then it lands, I casually walk to the side, it can't touch me, use a few more arrows, it dies. Yawn. Some of the most boring and easy enemies in the game. I got fire breathed about once or twice ever.

Mobs scale differently, Trolls, Sabre cats and such are deadly when you are low level - later on they are complete pushovers.

I'm guessing these kinds of mobs are set to level 20 + very slight scaling.

Dragons amd wolves and most other mobs seem to scale from level 1.

Wolves seem to have minimal scaling, although you're more likely to get ice wolves later on.

Trolls are far tougher than dragons. I have no problems at all killing dragons but trolls can give me a good fight. Giants can too if I let them land some blows.

Actually some mobs have a level range. I.E: 1-9, 10-19.

I don't know the numbers for all of them but I would guess wolves stop at level 9.

I saw someone the other day say bears were harder than dragons too. I assume everyone means regular dragons. Because the difference between rgular dragons and frost/elder/ancient is extreme.

And if you just hide and shoot arrows yeah. Thats the same as getting on a rock a troll couldn't get to and pumping it with arrows.

hit n run tactics at low level, stealth + arrow to the torso. dead in one, but thats like level 26 or something. so yeah, they are pretty tough when im not sneaking and when they spot me.

I don't so much "hide" as "move a little to the side". Any other enemy can deal with this, dragons need to be less extremely slow and have better AI, I mean give them a tail whip move or something.

They do have a tail slam that hits behind them. I have been killed buy it. I believe it has an AoE effect that hits their sides too.

This is the real issue IMO. Dragon fights are highly pattern based, and once you have that pattern down they are very easy to take care of, and thats Dragons of all levels. Frost Trolls are in your face, and don't stop until one of you is dead. If Dragons fought like that, they would be a much greater challenge.

I've never been hit by it. Seems they have a large area on their side where they can't hit with anything.

Playing today. Level 48

Dragon attacks a hunter camp, and won't land. I miss with dragonrend, and the dragon flies over the hill. I hear it land. It was fighting two frost trolls and had killed one when I showed up. Then it ook off, leaving me to fight the other troll

It burned them up good before it landed. Dragon doesn't have to land. Without a way to harm the dragon, troll loses every time

You have obviously never fought an ancient dragon or an elder.

Same for the giants. Even when they touch ground, I've never seen giants do too much damage to a dragon. Mammoths, on the other hand, have been more effective fighting dragons in my experience. Sabre cats have inadvertently helped be out, too, and put up good fights against dragons.

I think it also has a lot to do with environment. If the dragon can take a perch and breathe, then it seems to land very infrequently
