Trouble getting into the game.

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:51 am

So I have owned Morrowind on my Xbox for several years now. But I've never been able to play it because I can't immerse myself into the game after playing Oblivion so many times.

Another problem is that I don't really know what to do after going to Balmora and talking to some guy. He just tells me to join a guild and leaves me there.

Anyone have any tips on how to get into the game. It souns really interesting when I read people's posts about it on the forums and I absolutely love TES history. Morrowind seems like it was a pretty important part of Tamriel history.

Also, I'm thinking about buying it for PC. Anyone know where it would be possible to get it for cheap. I'm in the south-east US.

get it off steam.

the guilds part is optional, it just helps you get stronger before you face the first mision.

talk to the guy in balmora again for the first mission.

Another option is to get a CT scan. Morrowind is the pefect game, so if you can't get into it, it's quite possible that you might have a serious medical condition.

All kidding aside, the thing with Morrowind is that it's basically a sandbox. You can do whatever you want, that's why Caius Cosades just sends you off to join a guild. But if you just want to do the main quest, try http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Antabolis_Informant.

I do highly recommend the main quest. I definitely enjoyed my conversations with both Vivec and Dagoth Ur because of the philosophy it taught me.

PC version has better interface. Dialogue and inventory wont fill up your whole screen, and there is a minimap option that, if you mouse over the areas youve explored, it will tell you what each door leads to. So, you would just walk around town and your map will label the guilds. But, you can jump right in and ask him for quests - he's just saying that maybe you should get some experience and equipment before you're ready to save the world. And yes, the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages Wiki is your friend. There are so many factions that you could play the game through many times with all new quests.

Also, if you feel your Morrowind is a bit behind the times, that's because they made it as powerful as they could for the average gamer at the time. Ten years later, most of our computers can handle a lot more power, higher resolution graphics, and a hell of a lot more going on around us. On PC, you can get into adding mods to the game to basically make it feel more modern, especially if it's jarring to you to step down to TES III from IV and V. Morrowind Graphics Extender, a good texture replacer, a face/ hair replacer are a good placeto start. But modding is a whole other topic.

An aside - I've heard that Steam's method of dating the files may make it difficult to mod the game, I don't know if this is correct or not. If all else fails, you have amazon or ebay.

Enjoy!

Hell, give it until late this year/early next, and Beth will probably release it for free as a 10th anniversary promo like they did for Arena and Daggerfall.

According to the MCP readme it does, but it also says that running the patch will re-date the BSAs for you.

Probably not. The game still has commercial potential; they would probably just re-release it as an anniversary edition.

I think the fact that TES I and II run on DOS rather than Windows probably was a big factor for the free releases. Morrowind runs perfectly on Windows 7.

It can be very frustrating at first, I know. The game is not forgiving at early levels, and granted if you are coming at this having played the later games the virtual diceroll fighting will seem an immersion breaker. Likewise the chase the hypertext game for acquiring new topics of conversation.

But just accept them as they are - old school game mechanics. What do you expect? It IS a ten year old game. Read all the text this game throws at you. It's easy to just hunt those hyperlinks, but don't. Because not ever ruin or crypt is discovered by hyperlink. They may just get mentioned as an offhand comment by an NPC and you'll have to remember it. It isn't always added to the Journal.

The game does not spoon feed you in the fashion which these days publishers insist games do, and yes (at first) you may take 30 goes to kill a mudcrab. And every time it will look like sword physically goes straight through the crab but misses on the diceroll. Don't worry. This will improve. Likewise your spellcasting. Practice hard on the rubbish early enemies. it will get better.

There are many creaky issues with any game this old. True, even the highest end PC and downloading a shed load of High Res textures it will still look basic compared next to a modern game. But comparing it graphically is really missing the point. What Morrowind does best is story, and a sense of creative freedom which its successors have failed to capture. You really can do what the hell you want, but there are tasks on hand in every town if you talk enough with the locals, join up with factions, and plough through the main quest.

I won't kid you, it can takes days of play before you finally get a sense of the game world and lore, but once you get of that hurdle you could well be coming back to this one for years to come.

I got MW about 6 weeks ago. At first I wasn't that impressed and it seemed very difficult. Then... I slowly progressed, got to know a bit of the geography and the towns, the guilds, the Houses, got better at a-fightin and a-spellcasting..... and now? Now I'm hooked and am seriously loving this game!

I recently bought morrowind off a steam sale. For ten dollars I could not resist and I have always wanted to try it. All I have to say about my experience is that I have not gotten far and have restarted about 20 times. But I can see alot of potential once I get past the learning curve and am looking forward to exploring the homeland of the Dunmer.

Now my only problem is balancing skyrim, oblivian and morrowind playtime. :shocking:

Yeah, plus by the time you get 60-100 hours on Xbox, it starts taking minutes to load your save every time.
