Trouble Understanding Retexturing

Post » Fri Jun 28, 2013 8:32 am

I'm trying to get the texture from the DragonPriestMaskAltarRuined into the RifRmMaraPlatform.

I've got Gimp installed.

I used the FO3 Utility to extract all meshes and textures into folders on my desktop.

I used Nifscope to remove the back wall of the platform by deleting branches which worked OK.

I've got the renamed edited platform and the altar on my desktop.

It's strange but when I open those 2 meshes with nifscope the texures show. None of the other nifs in the meshes folder show their textues.

I have no idea why those 2 show and why the others don't. They didn't yesterday.

And I can't figure out how to copy the stone texture from the altar to the platform.

Also in Nifscope some textures are marked with a purple asterix and some have an actual file path. Why?

I've been trying to understand the video tutorials but they seem to go too fast and don't give step by step instructions like left/right click here then do this.

There are a couple other items I need to retexture so I need to understand the steps.

This is my first try at retexturing and nearly my first try with Nifscope. Any help would be appreciated.

If there is just the purple asterix and nothing else, you need to put a texture path there. But the slot determines what kind of texture should go there. Normal, Glow, Specular, etc..

Off the top of my head, first three slots is for in this order - Btw, you usually skip that first slot and move down to the second:

.dds

_n.dds

_sk,dds(think this means skin file)

(correct me on this)

Sometimes, in the case of bodies, there is a _msn.dds file that goes there.

hanaise (sp?) told me that glow maps go in the 3rd slot and specular in the 8th. but for right now, you just need the diffuse in the first slot and the normal in the second. the only two kinda maps you need to use.

edit: I barely understand what the question is, but if you are using custom texture sets, make sure vertex colors is turned off on the flags.

that gets me everytime

Oh, guess that third slot is interchangeable.

That would be the 4th slot though wouldn't it?

Because it always starts like this

*

*path

*path

*path

*...

*...

*...

Need a bit clarifying here as the first purple slot never has a path in it.
