Trouble with Unfriendly Competition Quest

Post » Fri Nov 13, 2009 7:38 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to Oblivion so I'm still getting my feet wet, but I had a weird problem with a sidequest today.

I tried several times to complete the Unfriendly Competition quest with Thoronir and Agarmir. After collecting the Macabre Manifest from Agarmir's house, I took it back to Thoronir - and he said he was sorry, horrified, blah blah...but that I needed more proof to catch Agirmar. So I tried following the quest map, but it just stayed marked on Thoronir. After reading several walkthroughs, I figured out that he was supposed to tell me where Agarmir's next gravedig was....except he hadn't. And no matter how many times I went back to him, with the Manifest, he never said. He just said he would not follow false accusations without proof.

Finally I got fed up and re-did the quest, and all went as it was supposed to this time. He told me where to find the tomb and thence Agirmir. Still...WTF? Can anyone comment on what might have gone wrong?

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure if something went wrong or not. After you showed the manifest to Thoronir the first time, did the quest marker send you to the mausoleum, or did Agarmir continue to wander around town?

What's supposed to happen is that after you pick up the book, you get a quest update to take it to Thoronir; then after speaking with him, you get another update telling you to go to the local graveyard; at that point Agarmir automatically spawns in the mausoleum.

It's been a while since I've done this quest, so I don't remember if Thoronir actually says to visit the graveyard, or if it's only in the quest update. Either way, the line he said next was normal, because he'd already delivered the dialogue that updated the quest.

Huh...

The "need more proof" dialogue is supposed to come at a later point-- if you confront (and presumably kill) Agarmir, but don't bring his shovel back with you, then you get the "need more proof" lines from Thoronir.

I can only presume that what you experienced was a plain old glitch-- that somehow it triggered the beginning part of the quest update for the Macabre Manifest, then jumped straight ahead to the confronted Agarmir but didn't pick up the shovel update.

Hiya, thanks for the welcome! :-)

Yeah I don't understand what happened. All he said the first time was they he felt so bad, but he needed more proof, and the prompt to visit the tomb never came up. The only way I found out about it was by reading walkthroughs. I ran around forever trying to figure out what to do next. Maybe I accidentally clicked through his speech, but it should still have popped up in the quest update right? *sigh* Either way I didn't get the right message and couldn't proceed until I did it over. :-\

I guess it's pointless trying to figure out what happened after the fact, but I guess I wanted to see if anyone else had had the same problem. I know sometimes the games can be buggy.

I am not sure if my game is glitching or I may have just plain missed something. My problem is that Agarmir never leaves his house. I have waited for 3 days, checked every hour on the hour. I dislike using the console to finish quests, but don't really want to leave it unfinished.

He leaves in the afternoons for me. Try leaving the city, like to Anvil, for three days. Then come back and see if he resets.

Most days he leaves just after 4:00 in the afternoon. Have you tried the door? If he's home, you'll get a message that it's barred from the inside, and you should come back later. He may be out, and stuck somewhere. He could also be dead; he's not an essential character. Maybe he fell down his basemant stairs... ;)

Yeah, I try the door quite often and always get the "Barred from the inside" message.
Going to try as Big Daddy suggests, instead travel south to Leyawiin for the last recommendation, then come back to it. Thanks!

You need to take the muddy shovel from Agarmir's basemant.
