Troubleshooting CTDs when modifying cells

I'm customizing the Hoarfrost Castle mod for my personal use (mainly just tweaks here and there) but now when I enter the kitchen cell, the game crashes. I know it's something I did but I can't figure out what. So far this cell is the one I've customized the most, doubling the size of the kitchen and adding various clutter and furniture.

I realize this has been covered numerous times, but I've searched the forums here, a general google search for "oblivion crash troubleshooting" and "oblivion ctd causes", as well as searched the CS wiki with no success. What are some good steps to troubleshoot what is causing the CTD?

The only thing I've come up with so far is removing the custom meshes one at a time, but that would take a while and there's no guarantee it's a mesh causing the problem.

BTW - there's nothing fancy in the cell, just static meshes and the four doors/markers that were already there in the mod. All of the original mod items, containers, and markers are still in the cell except for some kegs and tables - I just added rearranged them and added a bunch more.

Nevermind - I found the problem. One of the custom meshes I had in the room had a smoke effect on it, and that branch had a bad link.
