[REQ] True "Gecko-Backed" armor retex

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 4:19 pm

In Honest Hearts, one of the stealthily added new crafting recipes for the Survival skill is "Gecko-backed" leather/metal armors. They give higher DT rating as well as some modest resistances to poison, fire, and rads.

However... they're just re-uses of the basic leather/metal armor meshes, no texture set applications.

Are there any daring texturers out there who would want to try their hand at gecko-izing the leather and metal armors (at least the nonmetal parts of the metal armor)?

Ever since I first played Fallout: NV I wanted the purplish-camo Gecko hide as a texture for my leather armour. Attempted it myself, but the texture for the misc item of Gecko hide is really small, so yeah. I'd love this.

I too was disappointed with this. I think they might have realized that people really like those armors and wanted to make them more viable for people who wanted it, but at least a slight change would be welcome.

I don't want to say that I'm a good texturer but I've got an idea that I'll try later and will post here if it gets any good.
Think about flickwerk leather armor.

I think Myrmaad, one of the mods on Nexus, may be attempting this after I asked her. We'll see what she turns out.

I came here to request same after I worked on it a bit, didn't like the results, started over and just did the boots on the Metal Armor, Reinforced so far, and it still needs work.

My work is coming along slowly too. It's a bigger job than I expected to get good results, and I'm having to do in my "spare" time.

Yeah, every time I muster up and say "Why don't I do it myself?" and start up, I then realize (again) just how daunting a task it is, considering how difficult it is to splice 'n graft from what we have.

I know it's not quite the same, but for some of the hard-core survivalists, what if you made a new item, instead of a halfdone recolor of the armor, what if you made a cape/duster coat that goes over leather/metal armor made of fire/gold/regular gecko skins? It could be something like 'Gecko Duster over Leather/Metal armor' or something catchier. Not the most interesting of ideas, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

That would again require a retex. The problem lies in the fact that none of the textures that have gecko skin are easily grafted from when doing texture chopping.

Now, bear in mind, I don't play on PC, so I have no idea how the game works technically speaking. But couldnt your carefully copy and past the texture together and make it larger, saving the time and effort you'd put into it?

As I was hoping my previous post implied... easier said than done. ;)

What if... someone made a square texture (let's say 1024x1024) of a pattern/camo like thing that resembled, but wasn't exactly LIKE the original Gecko skins, and then worked from there?

It would still take warping them to fit the UVW strips, so it doesn't look like it was just generated and then pasted on there.
