Is it true there will be no hotkeys ?

Post » Fri Jan 21, 2011 8:03 pm

As said here : http://www.gameinformer.com/games/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/b/xbox360/archive/2011/01/28/skyrim-menu-system-overhaul.aspx

I am interested in the PC interface

The enhanced hotkeys type mods are THE must have oblivion mods - for a reason
But they would never work as bug free as a built in, decent (not 8 keys one), shortcuts map

There's a new "Favorites" menu. The dpad on consoles now acts as a four way menu.

I believe he's interested in the keyboard interface, not how it handled on a gamepad.

According to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162902-gi-hub-update-ui-2/page__view__findpost__p__17082467, they are working on hotkeys for the PC version.

We're still planning on having hotkeys on PC. A couple other things to note from this thread:

  • For those wondering, the sky you see is the menu is not the actual sky when playing the game – it’s just the “menu’s sky”.
  • Also, the map is treated, meaning, it doesn’t look exactly as it does in the world. And with all the mountains in Skyrim, you get a lot of high views of the actual world. It looks really great, and is a feature of the game that always impresses me when I see it.

I really hope they allow fully customized hotkey/favorites binding on top of MouseScrolling to swap weapon sets.

I'm with the mouse-scrolling. If there's one thing I love in a game's equipment system, it's the ability to scroll my mouse to select weapons.

I'm not sure about what the plan is in Skyrim, but for Oblivion http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34735 is as close to perfection as you'll ever get.

@Rahu That quote about the map worries me. I want it to be 100% accurate to the gameworld not "treated." It will be weird playing it when the map is slightly off, won't it?

Why?
Was it weird playing Oblivion or Morrowind, seeing as their in-game maps were treated in the same sense?
It's just making sure the map doesn't give away every and all details of the world simply by virtue of looking at the map. Like saying, "Oh, there's all the dungeons I have yet to find, due to their external architecture coming up all over the place."

I think "treated" means something different for the map of Skyrim compared to the other games. It may have something to do with all the mountains so the in game map had to be altered?

I dont care much for Hotkeys on my Keyboard, but i do care Allot about how much time i will spend on button pressing when i get into a fight and i get confused as to what i must press next.

Im Left Handed, so i use the Arrow Keys with my right hand and the Mouse on my left hand.

Basically what im trying to say is, if i find myself too busy on Button Pressing instead of enjoying the Game, then Skyrim is Done for me.

Thats how i do it with Every Game, if the Buttons arent to my liking, then the Game goes to the Trash.

I hope that by treated, they basically mean "has a filtered effect applied". I like the idea of seeing the gameworld just as it is, and getting an accurate view, ESPECIALLY since it would work for mods so you don't need to makea new map.

And you have something to support that?

The map will probably be a to-scale map but with limited detail, like Oblivion. Which is perfect IMO

They did say earlier on that it gave a topographical view.

Yeah, topographical with fog-of-war where you haven't been. And possibly with locations like Dive Rock that reveal some dungeons below them.

Yes, it isn't a hotkey feature. I don't know how it will work on the PC though.

You pretty much never have to worry about ES Games for PC. If it's not in, it will be modded in.

It should actually be easier this time around as there is no separate button for cast spell, there is only left mouse button and right mouse button and directional keys either WASD or arrow keys needed to be used in combat. I will probably have to play a left-handed character so that my key bindings would make sense ( primary attack->left mouse button->left hand attack).

I am right handed and play arrow keys, there is an awesome feature called ''Controls'' you know where you can map your own keys...

Yes! I want to change my weapons with Mouse Scroll! :D

And, why don't hotkeys?

So... you play games rather than watch movies to get a bit more of an interractive experience but if the experience is interractive you don′t want it ? How about just watching a let′s play of the game then once it is out, then you can experience the game without all the button pressing. Much better than trying to persuade game makers to lessen interractive experiences because you don′t like pressing buttons.

I think though that you just have a problem with not getting used to the keyboard enough yet, I understand it may be frustrating to get used to the keyboard when you are left handed since most keyboards are not designed for left handed people but I bet if you just focused your effort on getting over that hurdle for the first few minutes (or hours) of the game it will start to feel smooth enough for you to play without even needing to think about it.

I once couldn′t use my right hand for a month due to injuries, and I learned how to manuver in games using only the left hand, perhaps you could do the same, put all the hotkeys around the num lock keys maybe ? Or you could also try to force yourself to learn how to use the keyboard with the left hand while using the mouse with the right hand, a lot of left handed people do that.

In any case, going all "bleh! I no buy game if it have to many buttons you need to press!!!" isn′t going to get you anywhere as far as arguing for changes goes. Especially when it is so easy to change the game with mods as a user, but so hard to make satisfying changes for everyone as a game developer, I don′t think Bethesda is able to listen to every request of every niché there is.

I′m hoping for hotkeys and the more the merrier.

Topographical maps don't show building architecture. Only hills and valleys. Hell, if you look at Oblivions map you can see it was topographical to an extent. So again, something to support that?

GSTAFF sound "it doesn't look exactly as it does in the world."

Translation: The map will not be 1:1 accurate.
