Trueflame Replacer

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 10:36 pm

Again with me being finicky about sticking to lore... :D Dragon_Lance inspired me to make my own Trueflame replacer, since he's making one too. Mine sticks a wee bit closer to lore than his: I like to think of it as a version of Bethesda's design that looks less like it was dreamed up by a ten-year-old. The general shape is the same, but the blade is narrower and less sharply curved, and the gap in the middle is replaced by a deep groove in the same shape. I did extend the hilt into a finger guard, mainly because I like finger guards on curved swords.

I never could understand what people mean by lore. In each of the series elders has always changed. In fact the stuff that was thought to be 100% against lore by people in morrowind just turned into an expansion in oblivion. This is a place with two moons creatures and magic.... So what is lore?

Wow, I'm going to have a hard time deciding between your's and Dragon Lance's Trueflame replacers.
I REALLY like this version though, but I think DL's sticks more to...traditional Trueflame I guess I'll say.

Yeah, same here, I like this one over the other one. But, like I asked in the other thread (to which I got no reply), will the particle effect on the blade be fixed so it looks proper for any race? Because on the original ignited Trueflame's mesh, the flames only work properly if wielded by a High Elf character...

That's because there hasn't been a solution resolved for it. Perhaps you can find a way to fix that. It may be a hard-code issue.

If that's the case than I think I'd almost rather just see Trueflame without particle effects.

Lore and continuity are essential elements of fantasy worlds. Why call a game Elder Scrolls if you're going to spit on everything that previous games have established?

Please, let's not start an issue about "lore correctiveness" and let Plankye get a replacer going, shall we?

Probably wise to let the artist do her thing and avoid hijacking her thread, true. She consistently produces great work, and I'm sure that this one will be fantastic as well. :)

What I meant by 'lore' was 'the pre-established appearance of Trueflame.' As D_L suggested, let us speak no more of this.

As for the particle effects, as soon as I figure out how to add them I've been thinking about getting around the stretching-of-races issue by making the particles more like what we see in fireplaces and less like a single jet of flame. I'm not certain it'll work but it's worth a shot.

FINALLY Trueflame looks sword-like (scimitar-like, actually) instead of being somewhere between a strainer and a hatchet.

Great work, Plangkye

Damn you! This looks great, and so does the sword Dragon Lance did. I do like your version of the section that's above the hilt, but below the blade. I hope you know what I mean.

Couldn't the particle effects just be attached to the blade itself? Isn't it the same thing as mods that have particle effects attached to select parts of staves and shields and such?

On a katana it's called a habaki.

Attaching the particle effects directly to the blade does sound like it may work. Again, I've absolutely no experience with particle effects (this mod was meant as a means of practicing them), so I'll play with it and see what I come up with. If I absolutely can't figure it out, I'll talk to Phijama since he offered to help. :)

 DO WANT! I can't wait to see what textures you create!

The main gripe I had about the original mesh was how... I don't know, it looked really unbalanced, the way the blade met the hilt at that strange angle. I love your rendition of the mesh much better - it looks more like a *thinks* falchion or scimitar now - functional and deadly (and a snazzy, sleek design).

That blade looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
But you gotta admit, from the hilt/guards to the handle, it was originally very ugly. The only way to make it 100% cool would be to redesign that whole area, without making it look like Beth's original. But you're sticking to lore, so whatever.

I like this a lot, but it looks too... clean, I guess, for my tastes. I don't know what I mean, but for some reason I really like the original. Very cool looking sword, though :)

I had the exact same thought, though mine's a little more sophisticated :hehe:

I'll go check the progress on Dragon Lance's before I make a judgement ;)

Awesome.

The only way I can think of to completely eliminate the particle issue would be to use just individual ones instead of a stack, set into the blade. This wouldn't let the flame extend, but it would solve the absolutely retarded issue it has. Because I have to agree when it was said I'd rather have no flame if it's going to look that bad, not that it's the modder's fault! Unless there's another clever work around. Then again, I never really used Trueflame ever anyways. I stuck it on a shelf at my house and carried on with my usual equipment, so maybe this will help me appreciate it more.

Random Tangent - Speaking of the lore nonsense, I wonder why nobody has made a daedric crescent that looked more like the Battlespire version? Morrowind changed it to be a little more symmetrical and thinner. Worse, IMO.

As said in a previous thread I'd use billboarded planes to form the fire effect. These could be individually animated so they move and scale a little to give a more lifelike effect. The blade color could also be made to change slowly, possibly through a range of blues/ purples, just to add something extra to the mix.

If Morrowind accepted particle streams that had the 'follow path' property, this wouldn't be an issue - as it stands I think the game amplifies the effect of gravity warps on particles which Trueflame uses.

All right, that animated billboard thing sounds like the best way to do this - Phijama, how do I add some animated billboards? The sword is all textured and bumpmapped now - http://i43.tinypic.com/ildell.png and http://i41.tinypic.com/27wrtc2.png. Oh, and does anyone know where I can find a good free fire animation to use for the billboard textures?

Nice! I definitely like the blade being closer to the original size (but not so wildly curved). It's a shame I'm so far away from Tribunal I probably won't wield this for a long time...
