In the real world, we don't choose our nationality, our gender, our race, or our natural abilities now do we? So it stands to reason that, to add another layer of depth and challenge to the Elder Scrolls, we should occasionally roll a completely random character in one of our favorite games. Since I'm most familiar with Morrowind and Oblivion, let's use them for example.
The basic version of this game consists of writing words that correspond to relevant choices into paper, and cutting them out in small squares. These squares are placed in a hat or bag and well shaken.
For instance, the first choice could be gender, and there would naturally only be two.
The next could be race, of which there are ten in the latest two games and eight in previous installments.
Then there's class. There's more than one way to go about class. You could simply compile a list of premade classes, which is the most lore friendly way, or choose a custom class by picking between stealth, magic and fighting, then choosing the first two attributes drawn, and either the first seven or ten skills drawn depending on game.
Then there's birthsign.
Once you create this character, the challenge is to actually attempt to complete the main quest of the game with him or her, even if it's a completely weak and impractical combination.
I'll take one for the team and generate the first, for Oblivion since it's the one I play the most lately. I'm just gonna go with premade classes for RP purposes:
Race: Redguard
Gender: Male
Class: Healer
Birthsign:Apprentice
Comments: Hmmmm....well.... I guess if it's going to give me a Redguard who is a spellcaster he'd might as well have the Apprentice birthsign. Still, this is going to be challenging, and may renew my interest in the game.
I hope some of you find this idea useful. At one point, the old thread actually inspired someone to make an html based random character generator but that page no longer seems to function.
