You follow those words in Fallout 2, and you'll game it like a pro.

This.

Main quests in the old games are there to guide to through the game. Oblivion style "do it on free time" phlosophy won't work.

Yes I've seen those opinions such as Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns .. laughter .. how can anybody have any regard for what they say after saying such a thing .. chuckle .. they are very nearby, caution.


If you can't... giggle... understand the premise of.... gaggle... that claim, or the criticism in it, it's not... goggle... really a fault of the claim but... guggle... your lack of understanding it. geggle

Probably because it's not first person or consistently real time and therefore interferes with the fluidity of movement. Sitruc believes you roleplay Gordon Freeman in Half Life so it's safe to say he really doesn't grasp the concept to put it mildly.

Fallouts 1 and 2 are ok although they aren't as good as Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The 10 year difference in technology is the main reason.

Fallout 1 is ok it's not bad although it is Turn Based RPG and can be hard at times.

Fallout 2 is pretty much a sequel of Fallout 1 although my computer can at least play Fallout 2 normally. FO2 is allright I like the Traits a lot better in that version then I did in New Vegas.

Technology didnt help too much the games nowadays thougth :rolleyes:

Gamebryo is buggy, very buggy, I dont remember the older games being so problematic in that terms, not even the unpatched Fallout 2 was so ridiculously messy, and the game was rushed

Other examples. well, look at DA2 and Fable 3


Also, the plot was better in FO1 and FO2 then FO3 and New Vegas

Yes Fallout 3 had better overall stories and more diverse quests ... not harder to finish than the originals, about the same depending on how it was played. The originals were easy enough to finish as I seem to remember.

The writing of the early Fallouts was ok but nothing to drool about as some seem to do.

You think so? Fallout 3's story ripped off everything from the originals. The story revolves around water, you need to find geck and dispose of Enclave and Super Mutant threats. It's basically like Bethesda had mashed up the original stories and made something horribly unbelievable about it. For god's sake you can filter out most of the radiation from water with sand, you could do wonders with activated charcoal.

What comes to the story of the originals, they aren't anything special if you rush through the main quest. The detail of the story comes from sidequest you don't have complete, like the disappearing caravans of The Hub and Enclave trading weapons for Slaves with Salvatore family. There's nothing like that in Fallout 3, just loose bits and pieces.

It has different ways to finish those quest too

Seriously, I dont see nothing creative with the Fallout 3 sidequest, and the only original part of the FO3 in the main quest was "find Dad"

It's a matter of opinion as to whether going from a mix of Board-game and Role-play .. to a fully RPG game is a revolution or evolution.

Whatever you call it .. I vote for it!

.. and that's from one who loved the early Fallouts, I know improvement when I see it, it gets my vote.

RPG is not boardgame related! I played Warhammer numerous of times with a couple of dices plus pen and paper. Although, you can play it on a board.

I think people are confusing "realism" (whatever that means) to imagination here..

And that's what I love about the oldies, I can use my imagination plus I had to think harder about my character & consequences. For me this is a RPG!

To the OP i find it very easy to go back and forth from F1 to F3/FNV or any modern game. IMO Fallout is quite addicting. I have been playing fallout1 for a little time now and its REALLY fun. The survival factor in the game is what makes it awesome. I really dont even care about exploration though either. Even though theres only like 10 or so locations the quality of the locations makes up for it.

Not only videogames. I see the same trend happening in movies, tv-shows, music, etc.

Maybe it's just me but I find a lot of things mediocre nowadays.

CoD is trying to be more and more realistic, while it maintains a rather silly premise, it subtracts from the game, it didnt back when the games were realistic (the older CoDs like Finest Hour).

Ah, others here say that there is nothing relating to the originals in Fallout 3.

Ok, the charcoal filtering thing, well there should be enough of it about, everything is burnt to a cinder ... but that's a reality thing and Fallouts are not into total reality. Fallout 2, talking Deathclaw anybody ...

Stand there like a cardboard cut-out and wait until the other cardboard cut-out moves .. ah yes, that's role-play, THAT's what we want.

Imagination of the situation, most certainly. statistics yes, imagine that cardboard cut-out is a person, must I?

And game-makers have gone to such great lengths to make immersive role-play and believable animations so real that you actually believe that you are there.

They needn't have bothered.

they are Genetically created species, that can mimic (just like parrots) sounds. They just have the brain power of your average human. With FEV and SCIENCE! it was in the realm of possibilities, but in reality they where meant to die off with the Enclave.

Not only are they nearby, they have guns! :bolt:

Actually, if you have a TES player who has never seen Fallout 3, "Oblivion with guns" is a quick & dirty idea of what it's like. If you go with "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" then Fallout 3 just uses different sorts of magic for fireballs, healing, and daedra.

I would never mislead a player like that when he asks for a game to play like Oblivion. Ludicrous.

I dont see how you think that. How in the world is cod being real?! I have played all the cod series and not once did i think it started getting real past Cod 4. Below that they more realistic than the newer ones but other than that no.

Relating and rehashing are different things. And rehashing in the concept of storytelling is not really a mark of creativity, nor a good thing if a good story is what you're looking for - especially in a situation where your intent is continuing a series.
