Tunnelers... WTF!

I'm stuck in the quest The Job in the add-on Lonesome Road. Specifically, I'm stuck in that area with the hanging overpass above, where the damn Tunnelers first appear. I'm stuck because I can't kill those things, not even on the easiest difficulty. They're so fast and they hit so hard and every hit has a pretty high chance to stun me, at which point they proceed to gang r*pe me to death. I don't know how to get through this. I can't even use sneak criticals to 1 shot them in the head because they remain burrowed until I come too close for a sneak attack. Using stealth boy doesn't help either because if I do 1 shot kill one of those f*ckers, the others realize I'm sitting duck and come r*pe me all at once. ED-E can't tank for my life so I can't rely on my companion to take all the hits.

The only way I've found to kill them fast enough before they join me for the butt-f*cking of my life is shooting massive loads of missles right into their faces at point blank range in narrow passageways. However, this isn't optimal as, you guessed it, it gets me killed too.

How did you guys and gals get through this [censored] ass map?? I saw a few walkthrough videos on youtube and almost all of them got it through using an autimatic, semi-auto, or SMG type weapon. I don't have any of that. I decided early on that I'd stick with the bad ass cowboy theme and so I only use lever-action, bolt-action rifles and shotguns, and revolvers.

Bolt action you say? AMR, explosive rounds.

That'll kill them.

Use a flare gun on some when overwhelmed and they run off scared. Hits multiple targets too and helps soften them up.

Flare Gun and flashbangs. They are your friends.
Make sure you have them on hotkey so you can fast switch between them.

What level are you though? If you are sticking with the cowboy theme I recommend getting either Dinner Bell and/or the Riot Shotgun and blasting them all to hell with the And Stand Back perk and the Shotgun Surgeon perk (one of the best combos in the game in my opinion). You can face roll the Legendary Deathclaw with this combo im sure Tunnelers are nothing.
