Turn-Based Combat

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:55 am

As a fan of the original Fallout Series, I was wondering (and hoping), that "Fallout: New Vegas" will have a turn-based combat format. If not, is there any room, for the inclusion of a turn-based feature, for those of us, who do not enjoy an all out shooting game.

As much as I'd like it, not a chance.

Yeah I highly doubt it'll be turn based. Obsidian is probably following the same format as FO3.

Best we can hope for is Fallout 3's gameplay style being further refined and tweaked.

Obsidian is using the Fallout 3 engine as their base which would make this an unlikely inclusion. Turned Based combat would also be pretty awkward with a first person camera, and not much better with the third person over the shoulder view.

Would be cool if they added an isometric viewpoint as one of the possible options, like in Dragon Age or The Witcher.

Turn based is highly annoying. I don't like how we take turns trying to killing each other.

Real time combat is highly annoying. I don't like how it depends on player's twitch skills rather than character skills.

If this turns in to a Real Time versus Turn Based debate the thread will be locked and warnings will be handed out if necessary.

Some people prefer real time combat, some people prefer turn based. It would be best to just include both options (and a top-down view as an option like in Dragon Age), but given Obsidian's tight schedule, it's rather unlikely.

a pause and play system could easily satisfy both camps

Not going to happen, they already confirmed when they announced NV that it would have the same engine and gameplay style as F3.

I never played the first two Fallouts but, I can tell you that if Fallout 3 had been turn-based, I probably wouldn't have ever played it.

Like I said, the best solution would be to include both turn-based and real time systems, like in Van Buren and Fallout Tactics, and let the player choose the preferred one, but Obsidian doesn't have enough time to do that.

New Vegas's engine wouldn't be able to support (good)turn-based combat. V.A.T.S. helps for those of us who don't play FPSs and can't aim, like myself.

The Gamebryo engine has actually been used for turn-based games before (E.g. Civilization IV). It would just require a lot more time to implement than Obsidian has, and Bethesda probably wouldn't want it.

I had no idea. Civilization 4 doesn't seem to have much in common with TES series. Anyway, turn-based combat wouldn't work well with first-person(and third-person) viewpoint of Fallout 3, and an isometric view would take away much of the greatness of exploration. Like I said, we have V.A.T.S., and I'm sure character skill will have a strong role in New Vegas. It did in Fallout 3, to a degree. New Vegas will have V.A.T.S., right? Also, how would the isometric view work with the style of exploration Bethesda introduced to the series? I understand your dislike for player shooting skill, but there is plenty of room for character skill with real-time combat, and Vegas looks the best from Fallout 3's viewpoints. I'm excited to explore a well-lit, post-apocalyptic Vegas, and it just wouldn't be the same with an isometric view. I strongly support character skill, though.

Look at Dragon Age, where you can choose between isometric and third person viewpoints. I usually use third person for exploration but switch to isometric for combat. I don't see why the same wouldn't work for Fallout as well. But as I said, a proper implementation would require time that Obsidian does not have, so this is pretty much moot.

Wizardy 8 was turn based and first person in full 3D and despite some interface clunkiness it worked out fairly well. Also there are some (admittedly undercooked) mods that make Fallout 3 turn based and it almost works

a pause and play system could easily satisfy both camps

Ehhhhhhhh not really.

So you like to explore the wide open spaces of the Wasteland, looking down at the ground?

Quite a strange way of exploring, if you ask me. :P

Since many of the development staff are currently on the forum, perhaps they could clarify if there will be a turn-based option?

There'll probably be VATS, but that's as close as you'll get to turn based. Seriously, fallout 3 was trying to be an FPS for christ sakes! They aren't going to suddenly turn back now are they? I think it would be way better if they improved the dodgey fps elements of the game rather than VATS or something. I've said this before, but fallout 3 was trying to be an fps rpg, but failed and the gameplay suffered for it.

Before any of you think I'm just some COD nerd or something, I religiously played F1 and 2 when they were out. I'm familier with the turn based system, but it's clunky and slow. If I've got a gun, I want to actually aim it and shoot their head rather than let some numbers do all the work.
