Turn based or real time?

I prefer real time, just because it's more suspenseful.

Real Time. Turn Based is boring. It feels more realistic to be able to do whatever you want in an instant, without pausing. If you want turn based, use VATS.

I have only liked one turn-based game, and that was the first Paper Mario. I really don't like turn-based games.

I really like turn based Mario games for some reason.....

I like Fallout real-time, played the originals, it was okay but being in the action is much more intense.

They're both great, but turn-based is waaay harder to do right [ex.Fallout 1\2, Final Fantasy series, and Fire Emblem series being shining examples], because you have to build a completely unique combat system if you want to draw in players. That being said, Fallout 3 is my favorite of the series. so I gotta say real time.

Asking that here?

That's a forgone conclusion

You'd likely get a different response at No Mutants Allowed

My preference is usually turn-based. But I think it depends on the game, as well. (GTA probably wouldn't translate well into a turn-based game, for example. Though come to think of it, I'm still waiting for a good Car Wars port with all the tabletop rules...) Since FO3 it's pretty much just your one character (personally, I never had much patience for the companions in this game - they already have trouble following me around and I usually just leave them wherever they get svck after awhile...) I think it makes sense to have it real-time.

That said, I'd still like to see a modern update of a Fallout game with the party-based format and turn-based combat... :)
If you want turn based, use VATS.

Eh... not really. That's just fancy bullet-time, it doesn't do pretty much anything that would correlate to what I like about a turn-based game. I like VATS, but I like it as a cinematic bullet-time function.

GTA as a Turn Based thing you say......it is actually intriguing me for some reason.

VATS is not alternative to Turn based, I tried it and it just doesn't work out, the Super Mutants don't like waiting...

Well, it is the closest you can get without mods, right? IIRC, there was a mod that removed all real time combat and made it turn based.

For RPGs like Fallout? Turn-based

I don't mind the combat in FO3, but it would have been awesome to have a turn-based game.

Games in general... Mostly realtime.
Fallout games specifically? ~They aren't Fallout games to me if they offer any less than Turn-Based combat.

(Ignoring for the moment the dialog, setting and story... This thread is about TB and RT)

Why is it required to be Turned Based to you?

Just because it is different doesn't mean you have to reject it immediately

On the contrary... The fact that it is different, means that it does not offer what I want.
If you want a Blackberry pie, would a peas-n-carrot pot-pie really suffice?

nu_clear_day is right VATS is really just bullet time done a tad differently. While I like VATS I don't know if I would say I prefer it over other bullet times I like how Doom 3 ROE did bullet time more then I like how it's done by Bethesda with VATS to be honest. Anyway on topic I've never really been a fan of Turn Based games at all I never liked any of the Final Fantasy games. If anything I would prefer a more FPS tactical style combat that was based on your stats when using followers in VATS or combat in general over adding a turn based element in FO4. I know I probably pissed off every single die hard of the originals with that statement but that's what I'd prefer.

Turn based for isometric view, real time for first or third person.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2KqKfuHL4w

The view is negligible; Its the gameplay that counts.

IMO Fallout 3 should have been terrifying competition for this game... As it is, F3 is not in the same league.
(but it should have been). F3 is just another shooter with a bit of dialog ~like Oblivion was.

*"Shooter" refers to the general gameplay that Oblivion and FO3 have... Call Oblivion a First Person Stabber if you must, but they are effectively the same games.
(Just like Doom and Heretic)

I see what you are saying, but just because it is a Fallout doesn't mean that it will be Turn-Based (FOBOS, Tactics).

I guess when it comes down to it, it all is preference, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

After all if there was no "Peas-n-Carrot Pie" How else would get the much needed Vitamins and Minerals of Fallout?

FOBOS and Tactics were series Spin-offs (Just as I consider FO3 to be); They are not sequels to Fallout, but take place in the Fallout setting.

Real time. I left turn-based back with Dragon Warrior on the NES. It has no place in the modern world.

I dunno about the others here, but I play Chessmaster all the time and its Full 3D and turn based.
(with 3D modeled chess sets and fully rotatable view).

*And I'd really be ticked off if they made a non-turnbased sequel to it.
(Actually... in this one case I'd be too curious not to play it and see what the heck it was.... but I'd not be expecting to play Chess; And likely be disappointed if I were.).

So I take it your not getting New Vegas and FO4 then seeing as how you don't like the direction the series is heading then?

Its a toss up... I'd want to say no, but the lead Dev was one of the team that made Fallout 2 ~so even if the gameplay is lacking, the content is likely to somewhat make up for it.
I dunno yet... but I'm keeping an eye on it. (I don't for a minute expect a decent Fallout game from it though; Just FO3.5 in a prettier package.)
