So I turned off Compass and Fast Travel

The map has a lot of power it's just been disabled. There's a mod that unleashes the map's power and explains it.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=272

He even tells you what he's done and advises a manual, "install" (which I did):

Here is some elaboration so you can add/remove what you want:

Adding this removes the map clouds;
sMapCloudNIF=0

Add these for: Vertical map zoom MAX & Vertical map zoom MIN;
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=8000.0000

Add these to: remove the blur effects;
bWorldMapNoSkyDepthBlur=1
fWorldMapDepthBlurScale=0

Adding will allow: Zoom Scroll Speed. Lower value = http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1285846-so-i-turned-off-compass-and-fast-travel/smaller increments, higher value = larger;
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.3700

Adding these will allow: Pitch = Up/Down(Y), Yaw = Left/Right(X) rotation;
fMapWorldMaxPitch=400.0000
fMapWorldYawRange=400.0000

I have the compass turned on and still can't find my way anywhere without consulting the map a few times on the way. :D

The only thing that stops me from turning off the quest markers is the complete lack of information with some quests. It seems, for some tasks, you NEED the quest markers or you're left wandering and confused.

Even with quest markers turned off. You can open the journal go to the quest and "Show on Map"
And it will basically center the map/cursor in the general area of the quests.

Indeed, their quest descriptions went to pot with this game. "Find the staff""; that's it. No mention of who has the staff, or where the staff is, or anything else, you just have to follow that arrow. Even so, I've turned off quest markers on the compass and world map.

Not sure I want to drop the compass/enemy radar, though. There's a certain amount of environmental information you don't get through the computer screen that I figure the enemy radar sort of makes up for, but maybe I'll do away with it tonight anyways.

I'd be tempted to play with no compass and fast travel if I could find a way to locate my horse without having to fast travel to get him to show up. I also don't like how the dumb animal either wanders off or charges into battle to his death.

While I have not disabled fast travel, I have yet to use it in 130 hrs. I have, however, used the carriage to take me to cities I have already discovered.

I doubt I'll disable the compass, since I'm sure people in Tamriel had them, but I may grab a notepad and use that as my quest log, then disable the quest markers, now that I know how to do so.

Killing the compass and all its spoon feeding informations its the first thing i do.
What i truly miss is the damn mission description, its impossible to get anywhere without the spoon feeding map.

This is what I've been doing from the beginning. I'm trying to play this as realistically as possible, which is why I play on the 2nd hardest difficulty, my character eats and sleeps, and I never fast travel.

Before I leave a town I check the map where the place where I'm headed is, and then I'll try to find there without having to recheck the map.

This is what I do too. Currently I live in Whiterun, and I run up to the map standing in Dragonsreach (the jarl's place), open my map there and memorize where my goal is.

I tried this, but on PS3 you can only turn the HUD clear.This does make exploring better and such, but it doesn't turn of the sneak cross-hair/eye and it also means you can't see your magicka, health, or stamina.

Here's my no compass mod for xbox, which also works for PS3 : http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/1674/modjpg.jpg

I made a thread about this a while back. Turned all of it off completely within the first hour, and if I get super lost I use Clairvoyance. I wouldn't like Skyrim anywhere near as much as I do with the compass and all of its crap still on.

I didn't want to completely turn off the quest markers and compass entirely since quest descriptions are often rather vague and lack directions. But I'm using http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=912 to turn off the nearby visited/unvisited locations on the compass. Now I can finally explore by myself.

Open the console (~) and type: enablefasttravel 0

Can this be added into the .ini to enable/disable it from that end?

It makes it easier and one wouldn't forget either!

Thanks!

Oh, how I REALLY, REALLY WISH that we could:
1) Disable (known and unknown) locations from showing up on the compass. (For two reasons: a) It makes NO sense for unknown places to show up the compass, especially places such as Dark Brotherhood sanctuaries, and other "previously presumed lost" locations. b) It ruins my sense of exploration.)
2) Not have to rely on the quest marker. (As it stands, most NPCs don't give you anything even remotely close to directions, making it impossible to complete some quests without the marker.)

I know 1) can be fixed with mods - but what about the poor, honest console folk (myself included, unfortunately)?

Honestly, these were two of the main complaints leveled against Oblivion. Was it really too much to expect them to be fixed? I guess at least now we have the option of disabling the quest marker, superficial as that may be.

Anyone know how to make enablefasttravel and tmm settings permanent? They don't seem to persist between sessions.

Figured out why...

'enablefasttravel 0' only works until you re-zone, like in a city. It then resets. Useless.

'tmm 0' doesn't hide map markers, it makes places undiscovered. As soon as you visit them again they reappear on the map. Useless.
