Turned off the grass

Not only does it speed up the performance of the game but it also makes the world seem more realistic. Sure some plants seem misplaced and out of step but the world seems more real with the grass turned off - thoughts?

The grass also serves to hide a good deal of ugly low-res landscape textures, too. (though turning it off will help with finding various things like dead bodies, for instance.)

If you want to address performance problems with the stuff, use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5434 This little mesh replacer is a seriously big help.

And there's also the grass bleed that is absolutely loathed by modders when it has grass growing everywhere it shouldn't be....

You know what? I say this one is a personal taste call. I like the grass on, myself, but I can see why some would prefer it gone.

I turned it off once when I got annoyed that I couldn't find a dead body and I've played without it ever since. I noticed that collecting ingredients for alchemy goes a lot faster, because the plants stand out more and I like that.

I wouldn't say it makes the world look more realistic, but I do prefer it.

I'm not so sure it looks more realistic with it turned off, but it does make it easier to see things and does help with FPS. I will say having world texture replacements would make up for the low res ground should you decide to have it off.

Personally, I keep it on. If I need to find something, I just quickly open up the console and type "tg". Much quicker than messing with the slider.

I too like grass, and lots of it. It helps being on computer, where I can add one of a number of low-poly grass options that allow a trade-off between quantity and quality. I often prefer high-res textures (and meshes) despise the potential performance drop. This is one case where I find more quantity at lesser quality quite acceptable. I've also replaced several vanilla grasses with the more subtle alternatives found in the recently released "Lush and Gaudy..." mod. I'm no huge fan of that mod's overall aim, but some of its grasses blend quite well with a basically vanilla (landscape wise) setup, adding welcome splashes of color in otherwise drab areas.

To each his or her own of course. My entire lengthy first play-through, and much of the second, passed with grass not "off" but its slider set far to the left. That didn't bother me in the least. Only after adding low-poly meshes, experimenting with substitute grasses, and increasing viewable distance did I realize it made land-travel more enjoyable.
