Turning Off Gore -- Good Post (Bethesda Please Take Note)

I understand that. The Op is a father and I am sure he doesn't want kids to hear swearing. Headphones would work but you still have the words shown on the screen so they would need to show up as *Beep* or [censored].
But the subtitles are optional.

(And also something that could have optional swearing removed.)

I think the German version doesn't have any gore but you probably don't speak German. I don't know if you can put on English subtitles or not but its worth a try. As far as the profanity goes, I talk to a lot of npcs and sometimes they have a totally different voice so if they have problems in that area I think changing the whole script would be a little bit more difficult. If not then it would definitely cost more and I think Bethesda likes to save money more than anything. Sometimes the swearing can be annoying or out of place but other times it the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptnSXhVrrbs&feature=related.

Well then headphones would be good for those that don't want others to hear it. But then there are people that simply don't want to hear it. So for that there should be an option to censore out the words.

For those that don't want swearing it would svck a little to have to listen to *Beep* *Beep* *Beep* *Beep* but really how is that any different from watching a movie on TV? I really hate Diehard on TV "yippee ki yay Mr. Falcon" It so stupid! I would rather just hear "Yippee ki yay *Beep*"

Fair enough, Styles, I agree with that. If it is not financially reasonable for them to record the lines twice, then I would be fine with bleeping out the profanity or just leaving silence there like radio stations do with songs. However, I think the extra sales Bethesda might pick up from people who would not othewise purchase the game would probably more than pay for the extra voice actor hours. That's just my sense of it.

Actually, I try not to play the game when my youngest child is around and my two older kids who are still at home are fine with the language and gore. It's me, their 51-year-old father, who would appreciate the option to turn off gore and profanity. I confess to being a wuss. ;-)

In a post-apocalyptic world where people struggle to survive, wastelanders die in unimaginable horrible ways, terrifying creatures, and a big, fat M on the cover box, gore should be the least of your worries.

While I see no harm in having a remove gore option, if it takes away the focus on other game mechanics, then it doesn't need to be done. Otherwise, might as well turn your volume down from the constant cursing, remove raiders and their straggled victims, and other Fallout, post apocalypse feeling factors. Heck, might as well make wastelanders give you all their food and call you sweetie pie instead of saying," piss off" or ignoring you like what thry would most likely do.

I believe I understand your point, and to an extent I agree. But I also think we've all seen lots of movies and read books like Stephen King's "The Stand," which demonstrate that a post-apocalyptic existence does not necessitate the sort of gore depicted in Fallout. It's a stylistic choice that Bethesda made, but not one that inexhorably follows from the fact that there was an apocalypse. Like I said, I have no problem with the fact that many people like it and I would never suggest censoring the content. I'm just saying there are many facets of the game that stand quite well on their own without the gore and profanity. I am suggesting that people such as me who appreciate those elements represent a legitimate market segment. I admit that I could be wrong, but I think the additional sales would more than compenstate for the development time and expense required to accommodate the option to make the game PG-13. Wouldn't it be cool if the label read "Game can be run in Teen or Mature modes?"

All the teens would be too busy playing MW3 with grenades and noob tubes blowing each other's faces off.

Really though, gore is fine the way it is. If you use a normal small gun and shoot at an enemy in the torso, wallah! No gore, just an unsatisfying kill.

However, low on health and have one shell left, you twist quickly around, facing your enemy, and pop that ugly head into a million tiny satisfying steak dinner pieces.

You know that you are supplying the wasteland (the dogs anyways) with a healthy meal of dead raider.

Your points are all well taken. That said, the no-gore mod at Fallout Nexus has over 2000 downloads and Google space is densely populated with people asking how to reduce or eliminate the gore. I therefore maintain that while your opinion probably represents the majority, there are still quite a large number of Fallout entusiasts who take the opposite view.

If I was a god, I would have used my powers to foresee the dead car battery and having to walk home in the freezing wind after going to GameStop last night for the midnight release of Mass Effect 3. Fortunately it was only 1.5 miles and I had my 17-year-old son for company.

Ouch! If you were a god, you wouldn't have to drive a car though, you could just beam to Gamestop! LOL

There is no gore in Fallout 3, minus the mutilated bags and dead wastelanders. Only exception is bloody mess, but it's your fault for taking it.

Oh you mean apart from the fact that mutilations and head explosions happen even if you don't take Bloody Mess?
Yeah sure, there is no gore.

I don't take Bloody Mess but the head explosions and mutiliations do still happen; however, I have found that if you always shoot for the torso, that stuff is greatly minimized. The real problem is just the areas where gore is part of the scenery. Some of the mutant and raider areas are just way too gross. Like I said, I would never suggest that other people be deprived of the opportunity to see the gore if they wish, but I would sure enjoy the option to control my own gaming experience in FO3. There are so many great things about the game.

You know what , I dont think Im ok with the fact that anybody dies in this game.
Unless they can add an animation showing their spirit ascending into heaven , then wrapped up in cozy fuzzy love making sure they'll be ok forever and ever. Yes even Moria Brown after I exploded her face all over the craterside supply.

That would be the next step we should look into seeing happen after gore and profanity is erased.

(Project Nevada sort of has this for New Vegas, it has the option to turn down splatter and limb amputations to 0%, it doesn't have anything for foul language though.)
