It seems the wasteland is the institutes dumping ground, Nick was tossed not lost (man good thing hes a synth this would really hurt my ego as a semi human) which makes you wonder what happens when they hit gen 4 ??

( I have my own personal theory that Nick was maybe an early courser prototype that did not work out. Of course I can not back this up and I am not sure why he did not undergo a full wipe before being dumped)

He also talks about a false safe mechanism where they erase everything related to the Institute from their synths.
