Tutorials for Skyrim modding

If I missed any primary areas for the polls, please let me know what you think should be added or if you'd like to just say what you want via a post, that is fine too.

Video is usually preferable for most tutorials, but text combined with good screenshots is a close second. Example files (plugins, meshes, whatever) for tutorials might also be valuable. I voted for whatever suits the material best.

And I'd rather the focus was on the Creation Kit itself, at least initially. Modeling and texturing tuts are very valuable, but there are already thousands online for the major software packages. Tutorials specific to Skyrim-specific file formats or model import/export scripts might be useful though, depending on how straightforward the tools are (and if that information's released officially).

Techland released some extremely helpful video tutorials and documentation for their Chrome engine editor (ChromED) when they released Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. I would love some tutorials similar to those. Check them out on the modding website they created cojmodding.com. Click on the "Tutorials" link at the top of the page. They even went so far as to create a document on getting models from Blender into the game. They really gained my loyalty by giving so much to the community. I will definitely be buying the next COJ game if they make another one, one because I love westerns (and I though COJ was a great game) and also because I feel they cared about their customers by going the extra mile and giving us the tools and support we wanted.

I'd like some tutorials for the Creation Kit to be released, but that should really be it as far as BGS is concerned. Most of the stuff people will be doing will be in that so let a dedicated amateur do the other tutorials. It happened in MW, it happened in OB, I'm sure someone will put some out for Skyrim.

  • Any kind that best covers the material
  • None of the above (if limited to one choice); I'd prefer one that details the animation requirements of a new creature, and the steps to import an original design.

Creation kit tutorials please. And I would like specifics for 3d models and textures to be neatly put down in writing - as in what texture maps we can use, what kind of models will work and how they need to be build, if we have only one reliable transparency level, or problems with rigging on character models I'd like to be simply notified about it.

Where's the 'Let someone else do the modding and I'll download it" option? =)

1) Video, with text+image a close second
2) How to use the CS. However, I'd prefer them to focus things specifically on how to use new features of the CS (like the tree thing), rather than doing very basic dungeon tutorial stuff that's been the same since Morrowind. I know thats not going to happen though.

A Max exporter tutorial if Beth releases one would be nice too. Otherwise plenty of graphics tutorials are available online already.

I didn't say official tutorials or otherwise...that is not the point. Just what specifically would the community like to see created first.

TExt and image always worked best for me. And honestly adding anything other than tutorials for the program itself would feel out of place. There are plenty of tutorails for the other pograms listed out there anyway.

Being able to selection multiple options would have been better. Example... of course the most obvious answer is to pic whatever media best fits, if you think that is vid or text.

As for the rest, yea tutorials explaining how to create models would be good, but if we are talking about the creation kit, it makes sense they should have tutorials for that first.

Assuming that interface for the Creation Kit is not drastically different from the previous Construction Kit versions then I would like to see tutorials on how to get models and animations from Blender into the game if it's at all supported and how cut scenes are handled or created in the new kit. If the interface is very different though I want tutorials on how to use the Creation Kit first.

It can't be too different from Oblivion modding.

No need to even think about this atm.

I'll may write a specific tutorial or 2. On what I have no idea. It'll all depend on what happens with tools and what really annoys me the most, If I see people doing some ridiculous workflow, spouting nonsense, or consistently making some schoolboy error in asset creation, setup, or exporting. I may slap something together. What I found in F3 is that no one ever reads the tutorials though. 99% still seem incapable of using the max or blender nif exporters correctly, and end up wasting time hacking a nif to work by a lot of copy and paste.

I would normally agree with you but after seeing how much Techland improved their game editor ChromED (from version 3 to version 4 I believe) it's possible Bethesda could have made a lot of changes. The newest version of ChromED has prebuilt templates for a variety of things in the game. You can drag and drop a prebuilt quest on a map then edit it however you wanted or drag and drop a preconfigure enemy encounter with fight nodes, waypoints, etc. all ready to go. It was a huge improvement over the previous versions of having to add each element one at a time and then link everything together. If Bethesda has been watching what some other developers have been doing with their tools over the last five years and they have created a new engine then I see no better time to implement new ways of doing things. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Would love a nice tutorial, they made several YouTube tutorials to get us kicked-off on the GECK for Fallout 3. We may be able to expect more of that.

But aside from YouTube, I suspect it will be folks in the community that build the documentation set for the CS. I would love to make one, depending on how close the CS is to the GECK.

In this case, Text and image... The Skyrim CS Wiki first and foremost.

first thing to do is go DL the toolkit yourself. Havok will send you a linky if you fill out a little form and give them an email address.

there are also havok behavior tutorials http://www.havok.com/index.php?page=behavior-tutorials

Oh I forgot about this. Yes I would like more information on how this is done in the game as well!

They seem to be using both havok physics and the havok behaviour, this basically allows actors to dynamically be affected by physics interactions... while still alive and being controlled by an animation. Unlike Oblivion/F3 when actors only had ragdoll physics interaction with the world when they weren't controled by an anim, ie they were dead.

Any other havok product is unconfirmed, ie havok cloth etc.

Sounds great.

RadHamster had an interest in this about two and a half years ago... I saw it and certainly saw why it would be interesting.
