Twilight and love?

Post » Mon May 16, 2011 10:49 pm

I know some guys hate twilight. but why? Guys tend to say, 1. cuz it's "gay"; 2. they are not true vampires; 3. the book is mediocre; 4. the plot doesn't make sense. 5. movie is bad

Personally I tend to agree that the whole saga has a somewhat girly- fantasy touch that triggers our ( I mean guys') inner, secret, hidden thoughts of "I hate girls, girls are ridiculous" from when we were very young, like 4, or 5 years old. Despite the fact that vampires are poorly implemented in the story, what about the love aspect? I used to hear from a friend, a 20+ year old girl, that twilight (the first movie) depicts the perfect love and that a perfect gentleman like Edward (NOT Robert Pattison) is now nowhere to be found. I'm sure many twilight fans have the same feeling towards him.

Let's also ignore the fact that Edward is ridiculously rich and handsome and is a vampire, then what quality does he posses to be highly regarded by ladies alike? What kind of love is he giving to Bella to be valued as perfect love from a perfect gentleman?

Let's discuss :)

and let's also try to stay away from talking about vampires, let's just assume that Edward is not a vampire.

Well I'm a female and have only read the books, but I did not in any way like the portrayal of love. I could go off on a rant but there's no point :P I'll just say that it is very superficial (mainly due to poorly written characters), and some have called the relationship borderline abusive because of the dependency. I don't know if I would go as far as to say it was "abusive", but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

They are, in my personal opinion, simply poorly written books, with shallow characters, a female protagonist who is basically a cipher, a junvenile depiction/idea of the "perfect" man. Don't know what that has to do with "love", except for young tween girls, who find it all romantic, because, well, they don't know much about real life yet. :)

My girlfreind is really into Twilight, not like super seriously into it but she has read all the books and watched all the movies....multiple times...ok, maybe shes kinda sorta really into it. But she fell for me pretty fast, I mean, who wouldnt? :hubbahubba: so if that means I'm similar to any of the "vampires" I dont know if I should offended or flattered  I've honestly never watched 2 seconds or read 2 words of anything Twilight so I dont know how the vampires act, I know how they look and I definatley do not look like one of them :P I am really nice and caring and all that jazz according to my girlfreind sooo....

Edit: Also, most smileys in one post that I have written before :D

Twilight has got to be one of the worst novels ever. Just from these videos by this guy Alex I can see that. The characters are horrible. Twilight is just the most shallow terrible book about romance. If you want a book about teenage love and romance read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Abundance_of_Katherinesby John Green. The most prestigous award for young advlt fiction is a printz award and John Green has won one and An Abundance of Katherines was a finalist. Theres a reason why twilight never won such an award and gets such literary criticism.

I'll say it loud and clear once and for all; I harbor no hatred for Twilight. I may take jabs at it every now and then; but I take jabs at everything.

Anyway; the reason Bella loves Edward (besides his money, appearance, and "cool" qualities) is because he sort of goes all out for her. He's dedicated himself to her; which I guess she digs.

Her character being a rather plain girl is obviously flattered, and thus takes up the opportunity to get with him. :)

Edit: It's funny I see this topic here as I was only just discussing Twilight with a friend not a minute ago! :P

I just think it sounds and reads like something really crappy off of fanfiction.net or fictionpress.

I have never read or seen any of it besides TV commercials, so mostly all of what I know about it is from this forums, which tend to be extremely negative about anything and about Twilight in particular. But from what I gather it is something like My Immortal, only written in English and it actually got published. Now I don't know much about the plot so what I am about to say is probably completely missing the point of the story, but I find a 200 year old guy who goes to high schools to pick up girls kind of creepy.

So, wait. Let me see if I have this right. Your friend's idea of a perfect gentleman is someone who stalks her, and watches her sleep at night? Who treats her like an emotional yo-yo? Who tries to isolate her from her friends so she'll rely on him? Who, every moment they're together, is trying to restrain the urge to murder her? Whose only positive quality seems to be his physical appearance?
Your friend has bad taste. Bad, baaaaaaaaad taste.

This is why I love Twilight. Now if I break into someone's home and get caught, I can just say I'm not here to rob them, I just came because I'm totally in love with them and stuff, and they'll totally buy it! And it looks like I'll be able to do the same thing when holding women for ransom! No need to wait for Stockholm syndrome to kick in!

First of all, what is this human emotion you call "wub"? Second, I prefer my vampire movies to have vampires in it, not blood svcking sissies.

This emotion of wub both confuses and angers me!

Anywho, random references aside I find Twilight to be like a poorly written fanfic. Many of the fans seem to be mentally unstable (The crazed Aussy who shot some guy with a flaregun for example). Edward's idea of love is flawed, and rather creepy. I fail to see how stalking someone and isolating them from other people is romantic. Not to mention the implied pedophilia brought up in the most recent book.

1. EDWARD IS A CORPSE
2. Refering back to 1 corpses dont have blood flow so no hardon for lack of a betterword so no prego
3. Vampires are nothing like the twilight ones
4. Stephanie Myer is the one author i dislike
i respect them like i respect Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and most teen idols and rappers
because heck i couldnt do that, i cant write sing or play anything

AHA. I found it!

http://vampirely.wordpress.com/.

I like this in the FAQ section.
We know Alice is your favourite character so far. Who’s your least-favourite?

The least favorite is easily Bella. I was told this character is a strong heroine, a role-model, and someone who is characterized by the choices she made. She is absolutely none of the above. I can’t even justify her personality as “typical teenager,” because while she has the irrationality, [censored], and depression down, this doesn’t explain why she has no friends, hobbies, goals, or backbone. Bella is Useless Horror Movie Female #47, complete with Falling Down Action. Bella, all the way.

Spot on. Hate that these young girls are getting fed this kind of garbage and giving them unrealistic expectations.

1 + 2 if he was a corpse and had no blood flow he would have rigormortis (SP) and not be able to move.
2 I agree, I dont care when people say they are fictional.

Wait, wait, what? Seriously? Someone seriously did that?

Yeah someone said twilight svcks, so she got violent. Its not an isolated case I heared a few, just no others involving flare guns. Twilight fans are bat[censored]insane.

Just to add to the reasons

Cullen is apparently a hundredsomething year old vampire, bella is a teen... Yeah twilight is creepy as [censored].

Apparently he gives her a C sec with his teeth... The [censored], I cant say anything beyond that.

I saw the same thing caffinatedjedi linked. Like I said bat[censored]insane.

Lol that was nothing compared to Jacob "imprinting" on a newborn
But it's ok, he'll just be a brother/father figure until she reaches maturity...
