Twisted minds

Post » Wed Mar 19, 2014 9:53 am

The following is my personal opinionated opinion.

Do the developers of ESO, and do we as players, have a moral obligation not to cross certain moral borders?

And where are these borders?

What am I about?

I encountered a quest in ESO where an Argonian Witch required my Caracter to feed a poisenous mushroom to her apprentices

so that they would die and some Trees and scrubs could grow again.

What twisted mind comes up with a quest like that?

Just in case you think I am overly-sensitive... I am quite fine with Werewolves and think Vampires ought to be Buffy-ed.

I am quite alright with established Fantasy Lore. However, the willfull murder of (even pretent) intelligent beings so that plants can

grow? Where is the borderline here? What about Cannibalism? What about torture... like in SWTOR?

How far can we go before our minds will be totally and absolutely Twisted?

What quests do we (as a community of players) accept and where do we start to reject quests.

Do I have a clear answer...no...

So, what do you think?

I think you are overly sensitive. Do you complain about movies and books? Music? What did you think of Sunday's The Walking Dead?

I assume you are unfamiliar with the lore of druids in fantasy?

Here's the thing: Nobody is forcing you to do that quest. Based on what I've seen so far in ESO doing (or refusing to do) a quest like that one could have far-reaching game implications (which I love). If it makes you uncomfortable, don't do it!

No S H I T. It's rare that I am shocked by a tv show or movie. Sunday's TWD was an immense exception to that.

Political correctness in the elder scrolls universe. The Dark Brotherhood would be furious!

Did you read all the dialog? The NPC's you feed the mushrooms to know exactly what they're eating. It's not like you're sneaking the mushrooms into their diet. They're sacrificing themselves for the greater good.

Funny you should mention cannibalism. Bosmer are meant to indulge in the odd bit of cannibalism as part of lore. I'd be surprised if no mention of that came up in ESO.

Game developers, movie directors, novelists and book writers don't want you going out and emulating the things that occur in their work; quite the opposite in a lot of cases. We all have our own set of morals, which shouldn't nessasarily be altered by fictional content. If you're turned off by advlt themes, I'd suggest you simply stay away from them. On the other hand, if you're able to appreciate good storytelling, regardless of how explicit, then good for you.

There is certainly something to be said for the amount of murder that's common place in most AAA titles these days, but so long as you approach these themes with an air of scepticism; and know the difference between fiction and reality, they can't really do you any harm.

Complaining about fantasy lore?

If you really feel that strongly about it don't play the game. But what is the point of complaining about it in a forum?

Buffy-ed? What does that even mean?

You should probably not be playing an M rated game.

My thoughts exactly. Besides, if you don't agree with them sacrificing themselves just walk away.

I agree with everyone else.

You're ok with "go over there and kill those guys with your sword", but not ok with "go over there and kill those guys with a mushroom"?

I'm betting this person wishes they didn't start this thread. I'm also guessing and hoping that they don't have access to HBO.

If you don't want to do the quest, skip it. In Morrowind i was asked to ruin ones shop in Vivec. Going there i saw that person had already a pover shop. So i refused to do it.

If it is not part of the main story it is not necessary. Then you need to ask yourself... is the reward worth the risk? If not, delete it from your journal. Or have your wife do it for you while you are not looking,

Of all the lore in TES THAT is the thing that bunches your nickers? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Molag_Bal, if the benign quest you mention so pulls on your moral reservations I suggest dropping this game like a bad habit.

I got that. I'm just not sure how does one Buffy something? It's not a verb.

Even assuming they should be more like the vampires in that show, what does that mean? Make funny one-liners? Have ridiculous eyebrow prosthetics?

In my personal, opinionated opinion, yes, there are moral lines that should not be crossed. Murder and cannibalism don't come close to toeing that line for me. (As much as it irks me sometimes how fixated on the bosmer's cannibalism fans are, it was pretty funny to hear King Camoran crack a cannibalism joke.) Pretty much all of my lines are situated near real life atrocities that hit too close to home for too many players and situations involving children.

The sickest quest I've ever encountered in a game was Haelga's in Skyrim. I would not touch that with a million foot pole. That's closer to where my line is, but even in that instance I wouldn't say it shouldn't be in a game.
