My Two Cents About Weapon Holstering

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:01 pm

Here's my opinion about weapon holstering in Fallout 4:
In Fallout 3, many of my weapons just levitated off my hip or back. That drove me nuts and then there were some weapons which vanished upon holstering, regardless. Flamer, Minigun, Gatling Laser, pretty much all Big Guns.
I understand that there were reasons for this and I'm not complaining, just pointing out.
Then in Skyrim, the quiver for your bolts/arrows almost always levitated about 5 inches off your hip or back unless you were wearing the bulkiest of heavy armor. Most quivers didn't even sit correctly with the outfit they were designed for.
This bothered me to the point that I only kept my bolts/arrows equipped in first person and would switch to a different weapon in third person.
To summarize, if Bethesda felt as though they could not execute this feature without making it look like weird like it did in Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim, they should scrap the visible holstered weapons.
PS. I also want to mention that your stuff 500 Stimpaks, 256 Prewar Money, 10,000 Bottle Caps, 3 Suits of Recon Armor, a Baseball Bat and a Sniper Rifle into the computer on your arm. I think the disappearing holster should be the least of your concerns.

I came here to let you know how much I dislike you for using colored font.

Impossible to read on mobile.

Also, the floating weapons/clipping into armor bothers me much more than it simply not being there

I basically agree. I can easily pretend that the pipboy is capable of rearranging and storing matter. Just like you stated. If the weapons floated or clipped, they would have gotten just as many complaints. It was kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. It makes sense that they took the prettier option. (Plus, they probably knew that a good portion of people aren't even going to notice because they'll never switch to third person.)

I like being able to see what weapons NPCs are carrying. It helps when I form my plan of attack.

The issue for me at least is that the absence of holstered weapons makes it nearly impossible to truly gauge the threat levels of enemies. You could walk towards Raiders with no holstered weapons thinking that they should not be an issue, then all of a sudden get blown away by the missile launchers that magically appeared in their hands.

I agree with this. I often use stealth as my first choice and will shoot the grenades off my enemies' hips.

That appears to be the consensus.

Though with variable body sizing and layered armor I could entirely understand the clipping problems with it.

I like to color-code my presentations. :sadvaultboy:
The yellow was stuff I didn't want to have to repeat, so I made it yellow so people wouldn't overlook it.

I LOVED your colors, OP.

But seriously though, are we really saying going back to the Morrowind system where weapons just disappeared up our asses and guards appeared to be totally unarmed is better than doing what most games do and letting the weapon clip a bit?

ESO let's you change your body type just like Fallout 4, but they didn't have to remove weapon holstering at all.

This is a step back from even Skyrim, where your off hand weapon had no sheathe and staves appeared out of nowhere. It was jarring and annoying then and it is now.

I know we all love Bethesda guys, but at what point can we admit that something they did ISN'T necessarily 100% a good thing that we should celebrate?

It's true. Holstered weapons aren't visible at all.

I find that this clip is relevant in any thread about holstering, carrying equipment, what have you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhe58xORWG0

With all the gear that most players carry, invisible weapons are the better option. I found it somewhat strange that the ammo box stayed on your back but the weapon disappeared in the cases of the Minigun and Gatling Laser, but honestly, where could your character really put it that wouldn't be impractical or look stupid?

That's an interesting question. I honestly can't tell... I beliebe they keep them in their hand most of the time, so we haven't seen much holstering going on.

I'm still baffled by this whole situation.

Are we really saying going back to the Morrowind system where weapons just disappeared up our asses and guards appeared to be totally unarmed is better than doing what most games do and letting the weapon clip a bit?

Like I said earlier, ESO let's you change your body type just like Fallout 4, but they didn't have to remove weapon holstering at all.

You and near everybody else says this now, but we all know if we saw any gameplay videos or anything months ago, or around reveal, and saw weapon clipping everyone would be crying about it. "what is this 2005? Beth to lazy, blah blah blah "X" Ps2 game had better visuals than that!"

It's a shame regarding NPC's and not knowing what weapons they may have when wandering the wasteland (provided that they do holster them and dont just travel with them out already anyway, which would still make sense) But that's about it.

If you factor in the possibility of body sizes, clothing/hair affected by physics (or atleast acting like it), climbing into power armour, a layered armour system, and the many variables in weapon crafting it's understandable, and forgivable to just not have it.

Please, let's not pretend this is a "damned if you, damned if you don't" scenario.

Sure people would be complaining, but you can't equate some clipping with not being able to holster your own weapon.

Again, other games allow this and don't get nearly this much blowback because of a little clipping. ESO has bodysliders and different sized weapons just like Fallout 4 and still manages to pull off the complex and intricate feature known "weapon holstering / sheathing".

I really, honestly, think that for some people on this forum Bethesda can literally do nothing wrong. Literally anything that may be seen as the slightest negative for this game is being twisted into something that's neutral or even a positive feature. This mentality is just as bad as the people on reddit who are bashing the game with no evidence to back it up.

Honestly, I can only imagine what this forum must look like right now from an outsider's perspective. We all must look insane.

I for one really prefer to be able to see the weapons while they are holstered, even if this cause clipping. Would be fun with a mod that only let you carry what you could stash somewhere (that also made the items visible where you holster them). AKA 1-5 weapons dependent on size, and carry capacity of 20ish unless you have a backpack :P

I seem to remember a mod for Skyrim that made quivers sit nicely with most vanilla armours/body sizes. Hopefully something like this will be possible for FO4 - although if there's no holstering to start with, its a bigger task for the modders.
In NV, the backpack in the Project Nevada was not only my favourite addition to the game, but also helped hide the floatingness of holstered guns on your back!
We may sound insane obssessing over holsters but films have taught us that all cool post-apocalyptic wanderers have weapons holstered all over their person!
