Two Handed Weapons Speed

Post » Sat Jul 20, 2013 9:04 am

Hey guys!

I resurrected my passion for Skyrim and am planning another playthrough. I like two handed fighting style, but I came upon something odd when reading the article about it on wikia - it says that Greatswords have the same wielding speed as Battleaxes, even though axes deal more damage.

Is this correct? I was set on going with the swords because I thought they offered good balance between speed and damage, as well as being the best RP choice, IMO, as I was going to invest in Block and parry with the blade. But if they are as slow as the axes, I might reconsider.

It's how it was supposed to be. Greatswords should have been fastest, then battle axes and then warhammers. However yes, greatswords and battle axes ended up with the same speed of 0.7.

Bummer. Do you perhaps know of a mod which fixes this, or I am stuck with it?

Yes. For some odd reason the Battleaxe has the sane speed as the Greatsword. That's a good thing.

Now you decide between which looks better or which does more damage.

This + if you're more into bleeding damage or into critical damage bonus.

Also, Greatswords are the fastest of the three. So actually the Battleaxe is as fast as the GS, not the other way around.

You know you can block with any 2 handed weapon right? I know you prefer greatswords but it sounds like the blocking thing is an issue.

Greatswords also have no unique enchanted variants (until Dragonborn DLC) and no 'Artifact' either. Oversight, I suppose, ought to be fixed though. However, unless I am mistaken the lighter weight of the Greatsword should mean a lower stamina cost for power attacks, which is something at least.

And it uses One Handed skill, not Two Handed... Probably intentional so that you must kill your friends and loved ones to make it stronger. I killed Aela with it, regretted that decision ever since.

I'm pretty sure they fixed that in a patch.

It's a 2 handed sword that's an artifact, it doesn't matter if it's somewhat similar to a Dai from OB.

Yeah, I know that. Just that I think that from a RP perspective it makes the most sense to block, or parry, with a sword. The idea of parrying with a an axe or a hammer is not that practical IMO. I guess It's not that big of a deal though.

You block with the handle rather than the blade. It seems like the greatsword should be more effective lol

It should read... Battleaxes have the same speed as Greatswords.

It's not that greatswords are bugged to being slower, it's battleaxes that are bugged to being faster.

EDIT :

Blocking with anx or hammer is more effective than using a sword. Simply because you can not only use the butt of the handle, but you can use the intersection if the head and the handle to capture the incoming attack.

Like a hook, so to speak. The same way an axe head is used on the end of a halberd.

About the speed, I don't think so. If you check the weapon attack speeds on the wikia, it is stated that :

Greatswords have 0,7 attacks per second (+0 relative damage)

Battleaaxes have 0,7 attacks per second (but +1 relative damage)

Warhammers have 0,6 attacks per second (+3 relative damage)

You believe that the axes originally were intended to have the same attack speed like warhammers? Logical assumption would be that Greatswords should have 0,8 attacks per second, and thus there would be difference of 0,1 attacks per second between the tree weapon types, which is exactly the case with one handed weapons (excluding daggers).

You believe Greatswords should have the same attack speed as Maces?

The Battleaxes should be at 0.65 and not necessarily adhere to the 0.1 differential presented with 1H weapons.

Greatswords are lighter. And you get the specific KillCam where you run the guy through, lifting him off the ground...

I see no problem with the two having the same speed.

Remember, there are separate perks for either Greatswords, Battle Axes or Warhammers (if you wish to specialize).

If you want the best 2-hand weapon, go to

Spoiler
Liar's Retreat.

You'll get a Hammer that is as fast as a Greatsword...

Awesome. Good luck with those Falmer though.

Actually, it's slightly faster. When used with full elemental fury, it's almost as fast as a dagger. Awesome weapon. I made a character built around that combo; it's like a walking meatgrinder since it has the stagger of a hammer at twice the speed.

Yeah. And Orc weapons are fairly light...
Smiths up pretty high, too.
Took me a while to realize how 'special' that thing is!

bearded axes served that purpose of blocking and hooking with...the closest we have in Skyrim is the iron war axe but it's not long enough to be a proper bearded axe
