Two issues I just CAN'T solve.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:27 am

Firstly, my game crashes. I can load a save, and play around, but eventually it will just freeze or crash.
If I try and save, either Quicksave or regular, it will crash. This happens pretty much every time as far as I can tell, sometimes I can slip by without it happening, but very rarely. HOW on earth can you fix these kind of game breaking problems? I've tried adjusting the game graphics settings, doesn't really seem to help much. Also extended the memory using the CFF 2GB> trick.
I really can't play it at all unless this gets fixed.

Secondly, random Russian place names.
I understand this is likely caused by a mod that was made on a non-English game, but for some reason my word for Wasteland has become 'iouele' or something similar. I have no idea how to fix this problem, and I can't find the mod that might be causing it.

I'm not uninstalling and starting over- it's been eight solid hours of tinkering. These are the only two issues, but they are MAJOR ones.

Well, I have no idea what`s causing that save crash. I`m no expert, but it`s usually a combination of Mods rather than just one or two.

You will need to post your Load Order for any further help.

Always do forget to provide that.
Not sure what you can figure from it though, nothing jumps out at me.

Pretty sure only one of these should be used at once. Do you use http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10193 to sort you load order? If not / you don't want to then at the very least it's html read out gives advice regarding these.

Other than that, some people recently have been saying that using the unofficial patch with the latest official patch plus the overhaul mods like fwe causes instability.

Also, with a load order like that I'd recommend http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11336 too, as it will greatly help resolve incompatabilities

You have A LOT of conflicts sitting in that LO. A lot of the mods in there conflict with FWE for various reasons, namely a number of them are part of FWE to begin with as well. Unfortunately, I would suggest scrapping and starting fresh again (the exact thing you said you didn't want to do), and pay close attention to readme files and recommendations on LO if you are not using BOSS to handle that.

Anyways, some specific issues:

First, as Torrello pointed out, only one of these should be used (depending on the number of additional tracks you added via the track packs):
GalaxyNewsRadio100[M].esp
GalaxyNewsRadio80[M].esp
GalaxyNewsRadio60[M].esp
GalaxyNewsRadio40[M].esp
GalaxyNewsRadio20[M].esp

Again, as Torrello mentioned, the Unofficial Patch may be causing some issues. I don't want to speak on this much, as I have no good evidence for this, other than having had personal problems trying to get that to play nice in my games.

Now, some other points not touched on yet:
Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow in Fallout.esp conflicts with Dynamic Weather, so you want to drop that as per the Dynamic Weather readme file.
ACE2-1b.esp (if that is Amplified Crippled Effects) conflicts with FWE
FallDamage101.esp conflicts with FWE as FWE handles fall damage
DUIF3Extras.esp is old and does not need to be loaded if I recall correctly
BLTC.esp conflicts with FWE as it is already a part of FWE
BLTC Immersion Patch.esp see above
T3T_OutcastTechSupport.esp is also incorporated into FWE and conflicts with FWE
Mart's Mutant Mod - Zones Respawn.esp is part of the FWE MMM Patch and the individual file should not be loaded
Mart's Mutant Mod - Tougher Traders.esp see above
Mart's Mutant Mod - Natural Selection.esp see above
Mart's Mutant Mod - Soft Unleveler.esp see above

Pretty well all of these are also included in FWE and should not be loaded and will cause conflict:
MissingUniqueWeapons-Standard.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Standard-BS.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Standard-PL.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Standard-BS+PL.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Enhanced.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Enhanced-BS.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Enhanced-PL.esp
MissingUniqueWeapons-Enhanced-BS+PL.esp
MissingUniqueArmorClothing-Base.esp
MissingUniqueArmorClothing-Enhanced-NSF.esp
MissingUniqueArmorClothing-Enhanced.esp
MissingUniqueArmorClothing-RenamerOnly.esp
KarmaCannibalIncrease1010.esp
KarmaChurchDecrease1010.esp
KarmaStealIncrease1010.esp
KarmaThreshold1010.esp

With FO3 Wanderers Edition - Project Beauty (Followers Enhanced).esp you don't want this since you don't seem to have the FWE Followers Enhanced esp loaded

With these two you need to make a choice of which you want (if you want either):
FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Restore Tracers.esp
FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Restore Tracers (automatics only).esp

Classic Fallout Weapons BETA.esp is also already part of FWE and will no doubt conflict

BoSPatrols.esp has had a lot of reported issues with it, though I have not used it myself so I couldn't be certain

Those are just a few of the things that I am seeing offhand that immediately jump out at me.

Pretty good advice there all round. No wonder you`re getting those crashes! I can`t do better. I agree with the FWE stuff and I know the GNRadio mod should use only one, not all of them. Time for you to start dropping some of those Mods. :)

Well today I spent several hours going through the entire process again and making sure everything was set up right. Didn't have any conflicts or problems at all.
HOWEVER suddenly... going into the 'outside' causes my game to crash. And if I start a new game it pretty much crashes after the intro.

I don't even think I changed anything! I was outside, roaming around, then stopped in Rivet City. Now attempting to leave kills my game, and I can't start a new one without it freezing.

The hell could have gone wrong?
The only thing that I did between those points was loading up Wyre Flash and running the application. Deleted it pretty much straight away because I just don't think the Wyre programmes are any good.
No mods were changed- I'm baffled. And very pissed off.

As I mentioned, you have a ton of conflicts in there - if you don't look into addressing those you're going to have issues.

Pitty you don't want to use Flash, best tool out there by a long shot, just requires some knowledge

I'm afraid I can't provide you any further help if you won't look into correcting issues already pointed out to you, so best of luck with it all.

Perhaps you should take your own advice with looking into.
I've taken every recommendation on this page, started fresh and avoided any mod incorporated into FWE.

The only advice I ignored is not using Rain and Snow with Dynamic Weather- as the two are specifically made to work together, as instructed in the Readme.

I'm not sure if you just didn't read my post or what, because I specifically state a different issue. Only reason I don't start a new thread is because this one is relatively near the top.
And I've tried using Bash products in the past- they caused nothing but corruptions.
Fixed the rivet city exit problem, apparently its a basic error caused by the Unofficial patch. HOWEVER I'm still very stuck on why my new games freeze up.
Even using alternative start, as soon as the introduction is finished, the game simply freezes. Tried disabling several mods including the weather mods, but no change.

I recall this issue of whether to use Rain and Snow has been covered already - and I recall with you as well.

As I understand it the rain and snow esm are required for Dynamic Weather - not these two:
Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow in Fallout.esp
Enhanced Weather - Radioactive Rain and Snow Plugin.esp

Further that is like running two weather overhauls. But Perhaps it is best if Xepha answered that directly in his readme, which he doesn't.

Now I know that Dyanic Weather states that a clean save is enough, but the last two updates I had to do what I call a squeaky clean save. What is that you ask? That is when you uninstall the old mod then wait out a cell respawn (with FWE that is 9 days) then install the update.

Further I had to wait out the cell respawn then go outside then go back inside and then install the update or I too got ctd on going outside.

Now as for bash bashing - I recall that with you as well - pointless. It is not that hard to install and there is only a few days of a learning curve. Do you want to stop the bash bashing and finally learn how to use it? It helps to resolve conflicts and increases compatibility.

I've tried to learn its mythic ways on two occasions, between both the Oblivion and Fallout 3 versions. Both times it has succeeded in messing up the load order, confusing me as to which eps's it has disabled, and corrupted my current saves. I'm sure that if handled with the due care and attention of an enraged black panther, it can be a valuable tool. However I've given it enough chances, and both times it has only sought to frustrate me and force me to delete every file of the game its supposed to support.
I am not bashing the bash- I am merely stating, it has never been anything but a villain to me, so I won't use it.

At this point I think my game has developed some kind of aggressive sentience. For some reason it now decided to allow me to pass freely from Rivet City, and also allows me to start up a new game.
However it also stutters like its on a caffiene drip, and crashes promptly in play. After playing the same game for around 4 straight hours earlier today without so much as a glitch, I am... perplexed.

There is no magic - no mysticism. These mysterious workings are the result of computing gone awry.

Statements above do not help anyone diagnose or help you as it were.

The tried and true method of mod testing is to disable mods in chunks at a time until the crashing stops. This won't fix the issue but will help identify the problem. It is one thing to say 'my game keeps crashing with this long load order' and 'this mod caused my game to crash.'

I known F3 can be persnickety though - so when disabling make sure that your character is in a safe interior and alone (the vault 101 entrance great for this).

I'd start with slowly removing and testing all but the overhauls. Then those. Once you find the culprit then uninstall/clean save/cell respawn/resave/reinstall.

If not that then it could also be a conflict - be prepared for more than one of those and and the need to constantly test the long load orders. Learn about corrupt spawn points and about testing in more than one area. Do not stop until there are no more crashes.

Modding is not commercial console gaming - it takes work. Learn FO3edit.

You are doing yourself a disservices by giving up on bash, but I would not try it again until there is stability.

I've put more hours than I dare admit into working with these modding programmes, I have long since shared a bed with FO3Edit. Without its merged patches I'd be lost.
The saddest piece being that, as I said earlier on, this is the latest in a long line of complete re-installs. Each time fixing as many conflicts as I could find, and this morning it seems as if I'd managed it. The game worked perfectly fine and nothing was out of place for several hours of play.

This might make it hard to pinpoint the problem by uninstalling certain mods. From what I've heard, a huge culprit can be the Unofficial Patch, which is pretty deeply embedded in most mod orders.

Though I see it as being more a running joke now than an actual disliking of the programme, I almost want to blame Bash for this. I thought to give it a try earlier, but after running the app and recieving a strange DOS box I decided to back off and leave the sleeping dragon. At which point, my game bugged out.
Still this is probably the MOST stable I've gotten the mod selection I've chosen. Just have to tread on these last few radroaches. I'll try disabling the Rain and Snow in Fallout.esp (though I rather want to keep radioactive rain) and maybe try removing the BoS Unofficial Patch file for a little while. At the very least I'd like to start a new game without this unexplained stutter/crashing issue.

What dos box error?

Did you write it down?

When did it occur? When launching the game or launching Wrye Flash?

Did you mistakenly try to install all the python components yourself or take the recommended easier route of using the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368 package?

I use FOMM and Wrye Flash at the same time - issues of load orders being messed up should make no difference if you also use BOSS. You do use BOSS right?

Stuttering - try Fallout Stutter Remover.

Now finally the whole idea of reinstalling over and over again to fix issues is a result of getting lost and not taking notes. Wrye himself taught me that and it was this that got me into really appreciating http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/. I can safely say that using http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/ means never having to reinstall again.

[edit] also where do you have fallout3 installed? Is it in the default install path location? That is not recommended at all for using any variant of bash.

I use both BOSS (very helpful) and Stutter Remover (doesn't seem to impact much).
And my game folder is directly input to the C: drive, not in any programme folders. Never have looked at BAIN actually, perhaps I should.

The DOS error happened on the execution of the Bash programme itself, however I couldn't read what it said because it appeared for a second, scrolled text, then vanished. I figured I'd just put it into the wrong place, but I was concerned with it trying to impact my current set up in a way I don't have the knowledge to manage. Whether it is to blame for anything thats happening, I doubt.
Disabling Rain and Snow doesn't actually seem to change anything, which I suppose is pleasant, if I want to keep them active anyway.

The best description I can give is that the game gradually seems more... shakey? Stuttering, lower FPS, more of a pause between zones. Not the hardwares fault certainly.
Yet neither BOSS nor FO3Edit (/Masterlist) see a problem. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Your issues you are going to have to work out. A factor that has been in place for my modded games is my often stubborn insistence that certain mods can and should work together. Careful anolysis has shown time and again that this bias is what has caused my games to suffer. The next thing is laziness in not checking all steps (did I really do a clean install when upgrading? Did I really remove the entire mod resources and replace with the updated versions?, etc).

Not likely that it is about too much unless your playing on an old laptop or something. This is my load order:

Well this I know about bash/flash - it does not automatically alter any esp (it can, but not automatically - you have to try to do it - to do it). The same goes for save game files (ess). all the things that bash does is more or less reflected in the bashed patch.esp So if you want to undo the changed just don't use that esp. If the load order gets messed up just turn off lock times and rerun BOSS. Other than that it will have no effect on your game. It is a game manager not a game altering blender. Again while it can make changes to the save game folder (structure) or the AppData folder (if on Vista/Win7) to change the load order - it does not affect the operating system or the registry or anything like that. You should be able to remove it and move on like nothing (except the loss of benefits).

Without knowing the dos error - hard to say. Are you sure it wasn't a python error?

Many folks get tripped up (and get errors) trying to install python and all the component parts on their own, which is why the bash team made the Wrye Python 03a package which does it all for you. (linked in last post).

BAIN is amazing which is why I wrote that tutorial. From that tutorial:
BAIN encourages thinking about what a manual install is and how things work 'under the hood.'
BAIN offers minute control of files and gives sensible conflict reports and control options of resolving those conflicts.
BAIN gives us the ability to manage install order - a term anologous to load order with regard to esm/esp files.
BAIN Provides detailed reports of what it installs and can tell you if what was installed has changed, been overwritten, is missing, or even if a file was not installed.
BAIN requires no special OMOD files and can work with 7zip, rar and other common archiving methods (7zip being the recommended though), as well as, regular file folders (projects).
BAIN offers the ability to create your own packages that can include any number of mods with the limit being only what you can manage to create with file directory juggling.
And much much more.

Basically with my BAIN archives in place I can uninstall and reinstall my entire game load order in short time and I can save the install order of all the mods - even with none installed. I can juggle the install order and immediately see what mod resources conflict with what other mod resources. I know FOMM offers some fine tuning but the scheme of BAIN I find more comprehensive and sensible as it retains the idea of install order. Also FOMM will not tell you if resource files are missing or altered (well not as readily).

My BAIN packages (and hence my install order):

I don`t want to get into the argument, because I know how frustrated ZombieGenesis must feel.

I was just like you.

I hated wrye bash with a passion, I even got annoyed with Psymon about it. But after constant crashes like yours that drove me crazy, I finally decided to take up help from Psymon on how to install and use wrye bash. I mean what did I have to lose anyway? The game wasn`t working, who knows, maybe if I give Wrye one last chance?

He didn`t even tell me that much, but once I installed and bashed everything togther, the crashes stopped! Well they 99% stopped. I might get a sudden crash maybe once every couple of hours, but on a reload, all`s fine. Also, nearly EVERY Mod I wanted to use worked and those that didn`t work 100%, still worked without crashing the game.

I had fully expected my game to break forever then to bin it.

Obviously using FOMM and FO3 edit to make Masters and all that is important, but I couldn`t believe how wrye made it all happen. It seems important to install all the right stuff first (like python) then your on the way. I defintely advise getting that Wrye Python 03a package installed first and uninstall any other python package.

I still only have a very basic understanding of this utility so far, but it has been enough. All I`m trying to say is, with patience, Psymon is right. I do still feel that Wrye could be simpler for us noobs, but I guess that`s how it is.

If you want, I can post the instructions I was given if that`ll help, although it looks like Psymon is helping anyway..

Well would you believe I bit the bullet and tried using the Bash again?
Shield Watchers recommendation for the Wrye package did clear up some installation problems, somehow the previous package I'd been linked to wasn't working right.

However I will say this, after making a Bashed Patch, nothing has really changed in terms of the problems. What it has done however, no doubt through some weird mod combo, is put letters in front of every item. Like for grenades it would be "T Frag Grenade" for throwing I suppose, and "F Noodles" for... food? I guess.
Only happens with the bash activated, so I'll need to identify what's causing that now. Or just not use the bash patch.

That naming change has to do with a Tweak Names option being checked when building the bashed patch. I prefer it as it offers better sorting in inventory. Again it does not change any esp except the bashed patch.esp which is the repository for all the changes (merged lists, merged FormIDs, Imported records, tweaks and settings).

Using Flash without the bashed patch is removing 90% of what the program is for.

Likely even if you get this far there is still a bit of a learning curve where you learn how to merge mods and import records.

So first run BOSS (probably already have) - BOSS will add the needed tags. Notice all the green mods - deactivate those - when the bashed patch is made it will import the entire mod into the bashed patch. This is successful when you see a green cross in the checkbox.

Next on the screen that comes up when building a bashed patch you will see a list of checkboxes that if highlighted give more options on the right side. See http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo54/psymon11b/FormIDMerging.jpg

On the first one (merge patches) - check them all. In fact check all options in each category all the way down to Globals. Then you can start making choices of what to include. I highly recommend the camera tweaks. But take it slow and add options a few at a time until you feel more comfortable.

Make absolutely sure all the mods in the leveled list and FormID are checked. The only exception is mods that are currently deactivated and you don't want to take out of the data folder (for say testing) - having those in and the esp deactivated will give ctd as the bashed patch will have that esp as a master.

I was thinking that a feature that may have confused you before is the ghosting feature. This will alter all the deactivated plugins and put the word ghost at the end of them. You can turn this off by right clicking the top bar on the mods tab and unchecking auto ghost. If you have less than 300 plugins and esm and esp then it won't help anyway. It does help to do that if you have more than 300 hundred so that the exe does not scan the deactivated esp (which it does even if not active).

=====================

Now as I stated above I highly recommend first getting your load order to not crash before adding more features (even utlities). The best way is to disable a few chunks of mod at a time until stability returns then after identifying all crash contributing mods - rebuild the load order without them.

Otherwise you will likely blame flash for a pre-existing condition.

I clarify my statements above: Wrye Bash can help increase compatibility - it will not auto fix pre-existing problems.

If I'm around I'll try and answer any questions/

My BAIN tutorial is most for just BAIN (and is showing its age).

ZG - do u have fose 1.2b loaded? Have u disabled GFWL? Did u masterupdate your load order? Did u do the few but essential INI tweaks?

My install method:
1. Base + DLCs = check to exit vault, enter Megaton, save game at Moiras, reload save game exit Megaton
2. Base FWE = Alt start elsewhere, enter Megaton, save game at Moiras, reload save game exit Megaton
3. FWE + Recommended Mods like MMM, EVE, WMK, PB, FIOPs, DWeather, Real Lights = Alt start somewhere else, enter Megaton, save game at Morias, reload save game exit Megaton
4. Load groups of mods, do same routine, until final load order reached.

Seems like a pain but quickest way for me to figure which mods are not playing nice together.

BTW - Wrye Flash is essential to quickly get to CTD free game.

I'd like to emphasize again that Flash will not cure all ctds - i never claimed that.

It will help increase compatibility and provide better management, but if you have pre-existing serious incompatibilities - then no it will have no effect.

I get ctds too, but then it comes down to critically anolyzing load order and finding the problem mod - as simple as that.

What has led to long term issues is not being willing to admit or want a mod to be a problem mod. (human error)
