Two Quick Questions

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:29 pm

Before I even begin to attempt to learn to use the CS (I haven't even started it up yet), I wanted to ask a few quick questions. Mind you, they're probably extremely ignorant, but I suppose that's how you learn, right? I'll make it short and sweet.

First, if I just make a very small plug-in that adds a few weapons throughout the world that just uses the models already in the game - is it possible to add on to that same plug-in should I become more familiar with the CS and want to expand on my original idea? (Mostly, I want to add weapons compariable to Sunder and Keening in spear, axe, and long sword forms to begin with.) Or will I have to dump the original and create an entirely new one?

And secondly, is the CS used to mod Morrowind the same one offered as a download for modding Oblivion? In other words, do you use the same program for both?

I appreciate greatly any feedback I can get! Thanks!!

First question: short answer is yes. Longer answer is that you'll want to be careful when adding a changed mod to a saved game.

Second question: no. Morrowind's CS is included on the Morrowind install disk or downloadable via Steam I believe. If it's not available via the later and you don't have it on disk, you'll have to find one - I think Amazon is still selling copies for very cheap.

Ok so it would be less stressful to perhaps keep an idea of what I do from the beginning and make new mods instead of adding on to old ones to avoid any issues with save games.

Does this mean if I were to add weapons via a plug-in, use them for a while and then wish to uninstall the plug-in, I may encounter issues with any saves that I had made using the those weapons? Just trying to clarify. This is why I've never used any mods or attempted to make them before.. don't want to lose any of my games due to incompatibility.

And for the CS - I own (3 copies now actually lol) of Morrowind GOTY so I have the CS that came with the game. Are you saying that the Morrowind CS is NOT the same program as the CS you download to mod Oblivion? I'm asking because, to be blunt, I dislike Oblivion and if I get proficient in modding Morrowind I'd like to mod Oblivion to my taste. I just need to know if I need to go get the CS being offered via download to mod Oblivion or is it the same program as the Morrowind CS you get with the game?

No, the CS for Oblivion is different than the one for Morrowind.

Well, "blowups happen" ©. Basically, if all you do is adding some new weapons, and their meshes/textures don't intersect with ones that stay in game, removing the mod shouldn't crash your save. For better safety, you may putting your modded weapons out of inventory (and possibly leaving the cell where you left them), but AFAIK it's more for confidence than for real effect. Then again, if something *does* happen, you can just turn on your mod back.

Yes, Oblivion's CS is a heavily modified version of Morrowind's CS, tuned for Oblivion engine's needs and with no backwards compatibility. Some features may seem familiar, but there's different script language, different dialogue/quest structure, and much more. Then again, once you understand Morrowind modding well, it will certainly help in learning the new engine too.
