Ubisoft confirms 3 video game-based movies

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:58 pm

Launched earlier this year, Ubisoft's motion picture arm is wasting no time at all getting the game developer's biggest franchises onto the silver screen, with 3D features based on Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell in the works.

Ubisoft is finally putting into motion its long-standing plan to transform itself from video game developer into multimedia juggernaut. With the 2008 acquisition of 300 effects studio Hybride Technologies, its Ubisoft Digital Arts studio, and the recently launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures, all of the pieces are now in place. It's time to make movies!

If you know the games, then you know the movie game plans. Assassin's Creed will be a sweeping period action/adventure pic. Splinter Cell will be a Bourne Identity-style thriller centering on Sam Fisher's quest to do his job while protecting his daughter. Ghost Recon will be a high-tech military film based on a top secret military squad protecting world peace.

I'm actually quite excited about this. I enjoyed the three short films they created to promote Assassin's Creed. :)

There was an assassin's creed mini series prior to the release of AC: 2. The thing about Assassin's creed is that its fairly low tech...and mainly fancy stunt work.

Assassins creed could probably be quite a good movie. I'm not too sure about Splinter cell and Ghost Recon though.

Exactly how was it 'low tech? They acquired Hybride Technologies, a company that did special effects for movies such as 300, Avatar, Predators and Sin City.

Also, the games are manly fancy stunt work, so no surprise there.

If done well I think the Assassin's Creed movie could be awesome, but I'm not sure I trust game based movies just yet. They have a bad reputation.

Good as a stand-alone film perhaps, but if you're deep into the games, it's quite a disappointment. The Prince is supposed to be just that. "The Prince", not Dastan. And the "princess" isn't an actual princess and her name is Farah. Also, when time turns back, the Prince isn't supposed to turn all black and red. Not until Warrior Within at least. Besides that, the plot had almost nothing to do with that of the games, and so many other details were either missing or unexplained.

So for a die-hard fan, it's only similar in concept. Having said that, I still enjoyed it, so I guess it doesn't really matter all that much! :P

Well you're not really supposed to compare two forms of media like that. I always say that about movies created from books, you can't compare the two because they are two different forms of media, forms of entertainment. Of course the movie will be worse than the book (there are a few exceptions to this though) because they can't present the story in the same way as the book.

Same thing applies here, movies and video games are too different to be able to compare them.

Yes!

I am a bit excited about this, if they can put quality into it and break the horrible movie adaptation of games trend these movies could be fantastic.

I personally think the only game world that would stand a chance at being made into a movie would be Halo.

They could make an epic sci-fi movie with the Halo universe.

I just don't see AC or any of the Tom Clancy games making for a good setting for a movie.

They tried to make some Halo miniseries or something... it was crap.

Personally I think that Splinter Cell is much better suited for a movie adaptation than Halo.

I'm getting a defensive vibe from you, and I don't see why I should be as I think this will be a great film since the mini series was great too.

You answered your own question with that last line.

The company being low-tech is not in question, its the degree of effects you could possibly have in assassin's creed 2.

Eagle Vision?
Animus possibly building Rome?

These things might just happen once in the whole film and then the rest of it will be a great storyline, and wicked stunts.

Yeah, that makes sense. When a company with a lot of amazing 3d artists and animators acquires a professional CGI company the results of their work must be low tech.

Sorry, but I don't see how you came to that conclusion. I think it's pretty obvious that the level of 'tech', or computer imagery used in the films is just as high as most mainstream films today.

I'm not being defensive I just don't understand what reasons you have for calling them low-tech.

Let me reiterate once more that i'm referring to the actual effects in the movie being low tech as that is all that is required. The company and its portfolio are not in question.

I'm aware of the company...trust me.

I predict all of these being poor. The only redeeming quality will be the spastic action and possibly the CGI.

Still better than the old videogame movie standard of everything being crummy.

Well, I can see Splinter Cell ending up as just another Jerry Bruchheimer type action flick, and Ghost Recon as one of the yearly war films we all get, but Assassins Creed has some scope in it. It definitely could end up being mediocre like the last few RE films, but there's still a chance, what with the superior storyline and unique setting.
