So uhh.. Where does the electricity come from?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 5:07 pm

Something I've been trying to figure out since they showed the e3 footage is how do we exactly get electricity to power lights and turents in our settlements? Wouldn't the EMP's from the nuclear bombs basically make all that technology useless?

If I had to guess, we would be crafting generators from fission batteries, scrap metal, and scrap electronics. But still, it just doesn't make sense how fission batteries would still work after the bombs fell. Could someone explain this to me please?

Magic obviously. A vauge reference was made in Fallout 3 to some scientist tapping pre-war power lines and they still worked. That's the only reference I can think of as to remote places still have power.

They show you that you can craft generators... In the same footage from E3.

EMP isn't something that magically destroys everything which uses electricy. It can damage or even destroy active electronic devices but shut down the device and it should survive EMP just fine. You also have to remember that the technology in Fallout universe is roughly 50's level, tech from that age is surprisingly resilient against EMPs compared to the modern real world tech.

Fission Batteries are nuclear... and they lack sensitive electronics

Underground automated nuclear power plants connected to a vast network of tappable cables, yeh [censored] it why not its the future.

Whoops, sorry my bad. Completely skipped my mind lol. From the footage it says we need screws, gears, steel, rubber, copper, and ceramic. We wouldn't have to worry about an EMP in this case, but where does the power come from using those materials? :/

The answer is obvious. Brahmin milk is combustible(it's the future)and that's what they are putting in the generators.

Molerats on oversize Hamster Wheels turn Generators to create Electricity. Raiders work better, especially when a Deathclaw is allowed to chase them

Heh, it would be funny (but no fun to play) if it were done realistically...

  1. Secure a water supply
  2. Build a farm
  3. Recruit a farmer
  4. Grow grain or potatoes
  5. Build a brewery
  6. Build a still
  7. Build a generator
  8. Run the generator on alcohol

Then again, perhaps that's why the raiders keep attacking - "Vodka! Must. Have. Vodka! Raaarrrgghh!!!!" :D

Diesel Engines were designed to be run on Vegetable Oils, but Raiders can also be broken down into Oils to run a Diesel.

Alcohol just has a higher return on labor than Grains and Potatoes.

All you need to create power is iron, copper, and a magnet. That's how dynamos work I think

Or....or it's simply a small nuclear reactor.

Oh, but think of all the wood you'd have to burn to render down the raiders :(. And I'll bet they're all pretty skinny, too :)

Yeah, I just thought brewing and distilling alcohol was probably lower tech and smaller scale than pressing vast quantities of soybeans. At a pinch, pretty much any sugary or starchy crop can be used to make some sort of alcohol (burnable, not necessarily drinkable), and brewing can be a side-activity to food production.

But how to turn the dynamo, that's the question. Wishful thinking ain't gonna do it (though, as pointed out above, plot necessity will :))

I would wishfully think they would use the iron to make a handle or even a wind turbine ;)

Raiders running from a Deathclaw on an oversized Hamster Wheel turn the Dynamo, which supplies Electricity to break down the Raiders that were unwilling to run for Their Lives. Crops feed Everyone, and extra Crops get turned into Alcohol to sell and keep the Deathclaw happy.

The Diesel Fuel not used to increase output from the Farm is sold for Meats.

Brahmin could also be used to turn a Dynamo, but the idea of using Raiders as a Fuel Source was too much fun to ignore.

Windmill! Of course! Dammit I feel dumb :D. Or maybe even a lightning pole for those oh so frequent storms ;)

IIRC, It was said by one of the devs that the crafting will have a story reason. Perhaps the generators will be explained via the story.

Nope. Not at all. In a modern realistic setting, sure..for the most part.

You have to recall that fallout is a weird blend of old and future tech. Vacuum tubes for instance are fairly resistant to emp. A caveat, is that there is some debate on if this holds true with newer nukes.. but I digress.

As for fission batteries, its weird future tech. Probably some sort of self-contained nuclear reactor, like the sort they appear to use in cars in fallout. (Just guessing there)

Fission batteries and MFCs.

Which have been showing powering everything from cars to street light since Fallout 2, through Fallout 3, and in NV as well
