Uhm...where are the Hispanics?

Post » Sat Sep 29, 2012 9:53 pm

This is like FO3 (barely any African-Americans) all over again. Hispanics make up around 33% of Vegas's population...where are they? All the human companions are white has are nearly every NPC? Why are demographics being ignored? I'm trying not to rant but it is high irritating and personally I find a tad bit insulting.

I think the facial/racial looks from their face generator are pretty lame- I've tried to make hispanic-looking characters quite a few times with the generator, and seldom gotten results that looked distinctively hispanic. It's a lot easier to make an obvious black character. I think it's more of a failure of the software, than any deliberate oversight.

I'm fairly certain this right here is the proverbial "problem." Caucasian, Asian, and Hispanic all look fairly similar depending on the generated options, and there isn't a whole lot of diversity to the voice actors. Chances are you've seen a great deal of hispanics in the game, they just don't look right or have the right accent.

I'd pop open the G.E.C.K and check races of NPCs individually. Try not to get too hung up on what race the generic soldiers are, because they generally spawn from a quickly made template.

Im seeing quite a bit. Granted until I get to the Mojave outpost, their mainly enemy npcs or generic npcs. Camp mccaran the one u give the legion news to the guy not the girl is one, boones exfriend who used to be a Khan is one, quite a few npcs in freeside, camp mccarran, and on the strip are hispanic. Quite of few roaming traders are hispanic. Cant really tell with the legion since most wear helmets.

and cmon the best [censored]ing companian if not evah is a hispanic ghoul.

Theres quite a few of them is just with the engine alot of times if u aint staring at their face for long periods of time u cant tell if most npcs are white, Asian, and or hispanic because theirs not that much difference in skin tone or facial features unless ur like me and spend a loooooong time in charector creation lol.

So ya op, they are there and quite alot of them. But just to give a heads up, this Vegas is based on Vegas in the 50s and at that time hispanics were a vast minority at that time in that area. Not like how it is today, just a heads up.

Ya I can tell between most male npcs as far as their race but with women tbh with me its either white or black BC I cant tell with women the difference between the races, granted I dont make female charectors so I havent spent anytime in creation to see the differences.

Since when does the racial make up of an area in an entirely different era/universe have to do with this? Mexican-Americans have always had a significant presence in the Southwest with their own communities and neighborhoods (ex. East LA). Also Vegas doesn't make up the entirety of the Mojave and this counts for real life 50s Vegas as well. Nevada has its far share of Mexican-Americans and mass immigration from Mexico isn't exactly a recent trend. Its been going on since the 1910s.

There should have been some mixed or fully Mexican towns especially in the more southern regions.

The races all look reasonably distinct in the GECK, but in game the lighting tends to bleach everyone's skin tone into a muddy yellow, so it's hard to tell people apart. Raul is the only character with an accent because he's been around since before the war; everyone else's accent has become homogenized over the centuries (and it saves hiring more voice actors).

If anything, the great amount of seperation and isolation of settlements and groups of people would have contributed to more varied accents, and even new dialects, over several hundred years. There would have been far more various and obvious accents, not more homogenization.

Nothing to get worked up over, Boss. I'm sure Obsidian was trying to be fair and equitable.
