Is Ulfric the rightful High King of Skyrim?

Post » Fri May 31, 2013 4:01 pm

Before starting, and I suspect this may be fruitless, but I'll take a shot. This thread is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT about the Civil War.

Rather, the topic is about Ulfric's actual claim to the throne as High King of Skyrim. Do you believe Ulfric has earned the crown by right of the Old Ways of Skyrim or do you think he is a pretender who committed murdered the High King and is merely an attempted usurper to the throne?

Personally, while I do not support Ulfric, I begrudgingly believe he has a legitimate claim to the throne of Skyrim.

No, because he murdered the High King... with his VOICE.

That alone doesn't set well.

I still voted for the skooma and hope the 100% trend continues.

Yep, I voted purely for the Skooma soley to keep my opinion out of the poll.

I don't agree Ulfric was right. He challenged Torygg and knew Torygg couldn't back down nor that he could beat Ulfric. It was a REAL dirty trick. Regardless, to my knowledge they never note you CAN'T use your voice to challenge the King, but I'm pretty sure it's heavily implied to fight honourably, without a method your opponent hasn't got to challenge such a move.

I agree.

I think that Ulfric was lubed up on skooma when he killed Torygg. Therefore, he answer is "C".

Exactly. I mean it's one thing to challenge the hierarchy for the seat of rule. But show a pair and man up with some traditional mano-a-mano or weapon of choice. He was a piece of skeever dung and deserved nothing less that what was coming to him in the opening scenes of the game.

He's a dirt bag.

The High King is chosen via the Moot. If the Moot selected Ulfric, he would have a moderately legitimate claim on the throne. Attainment of power by killing one's superior has no place in a civilized society.

I'm no fan of Ulfric Bumcloak, but if the Moot had chosen him as High King, the office would be his by right. Ditto with Siddgir, Maven Corleone, or any other jarl.

Ehhh, I agree he has to be chosen, but wouldn't him killing the High King (Putting aside his questionable methods) put him as the successor given his victory over the pervious king?

Sig worthy.

I voted for option "C". You never want to see an Altmer on skooma..... it's weird to say the least.

Neither yes nor no. He has a claim to the throne, but the Moot needs to decide the final answer.

I recognize that he has a claim to the throne, that doesn't mean he is the rightful king seeing as skyrim is an elective monarchy. Even if skyrim wasn't a elective monarchy his claim could still be challenge.

I think how he went about dealing with Torygg was all wrong, and is one of my biggest gripes with him.

I will now down my fifth bottle of skooma.

If the Moot elects him as such, then he is the rightful king of Skyrim. Until then, he is a usurper and traitor to Torygg, the rightfully elected king.

Then he tries to play the "Ancient Nord Traditions" card.

I would actually prefer Baalgruf over Ulfric but over course My LDB has no vote. Yeah, yeah his kids are a pain, so what. Privalege makes brats. Ulfric himself has no kids "That we know of" but that doesn't mean he would be a better parent.

That's what I'm saying. Last time I checked, the Moot was created so [censored] like what Ulfric pulled, wouldn't happen.

Ulfric, we're not in First Era Skyrim the last time I checked.

Which is conveniently trumped when it involves something he'd sway in his favour by going 'O...Our Traditions....and stuff!'

The thing is... it should never reach an option of an election. His ass should be executed before any thought of it entering the Moot.

The Imperials sure want him dead but if he conquers Skyrim, his new Stormcloak puppet jarls don't have much of a reason to execute him for killing Torygg.

I voted for the skooma option.

On a serious note, no, Ulfric is not the rightful High King. Killing the previous High King in a challenge does not make this so, as that's not how Nordic customs work.

If, and only then, the moot convenes and names Ulfric as High King he will be the rightful one.

As a sidenote, I don't believe that the use of Unrelenting Force mattered a damn. Primarily because Ulfric could have beaten Torygg easily even without the Shout... and even if he couldn't, Torygg's failure to anticipate and handle the Shout makes his loss a legitimate one in any case. Whether or not the duel is civilized is something else again, but I'm damned sure that the Empire wouldn't care at all if Torygg had killed Ulfric. The only reason the Empire cared at all is because their guy lost.
