Darn publishers these days just can't leave well enough alone.

If Lord British is involved I have no problem with a new Ultima. However I'm guessing he isn't in which case this seems like a really bad idea.

With the same recycled characters from previous EA// games.

Why do companies bother with these "reboots". All they do is end up pissing off the old fans, and confusing the new players.

The Avatar is gone, what do they hope to accomplish by raising Ultima from the dead and mutilating what remains.

How is using the title of a series that's been dead for over a decade going to make any more money than anything else?

I suppose the way they see it is that they already own the IP, so why not put it to work?

They won't have to start from scratch?

Lord Brittish owns the Characters IIRC, so I cant see it getting far off the ground without him.

Er... aren't the ultima games really old? And the latest one was some sort of online-only thing?

EDIT: by old, I mean that most people will not be able to get a hold of a copy of the original games, may not be able to play them on their modern operating system & hardware, etc. And there may be bugs (as Ultima 9 seems to have, from what I've gleaned from the Amazon reviews). So, the age factor means the game is sort of inaccessible to most people... so... I'd appreciate a reboot, since I've never played the original games but have heard wonderful things about them.

The community is hugely devoted. To the point where there's a faithful remake of Ultima V as a mod for Dungeon Siege 2, and several other remakes that run on modern OS. Hell, someone even made a version of Ultima IV that ran in your web browser.

I'm willing to give it a look. But it still depends. Are they rebooting the franchise (as in Ultima Forever is a remake of Ultima) or just making Ultima X: Forever? If it's the former, it better be a clunky, key-board intensive mess with decent graphics and ultra-cliched dialogue (or a pleasantly updated game with the only differences being friendlier controls and new graphics and gameplay). If it's the latter.....Hashem help us all.

I'm just speculating, but I'm guessing it'll be sort of like a GTA: San Andreas deal. Seems like it'll mainly focus on following up on Ultima IV seeing as the twitter feed is going all "8 virtues for all 8 days til E3" thing.

I've seen some screens from a supposedly canned, somewhat grimdark Ultima DS thingamajig a few weeks ago. Those seemed strangely likeable. Of course keeping in mind that I rarely am as narrow-minded as most longtime fans of... well, anything really.

Anyway, let's see what this turns out to be.

I guess this is why they tried to take some old Ultima games that were free to download legally off the internet some months back.

That grimdark thing I mentioned above was supposedly a remake of Ultima IV, which is exactly what the fan project was. Might point to it having been succeeded by some other game, since there's a photo of a Mythic presentation with the U4 map shown.

V and VI both have Dungeon Siege remakes now. They're pretty good too, although I've played more of the VI remake than the other.

Always found it strange that EA never bothered with using the Ultima IP to make an open world game that competes with TES. In spite of Oblivion's gigantic success, the open world RPG sub-genre has surprisingly little saturation.
