[DEMO] Ultima - Serpent Isle Remake TC

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:25 pm

I said I wouldn't announce anything until I was sure I would be releasing something. I also promised myself I would release something this year. As the year now has only 5 hours and 20 minutes left (where I am) I guess now is the time.

An announcement and small teaser demo of a project I've been working on since sometime around April I think...

I'm glad your excited. I am too. What will probably make you happier is that I'm not really changing anything. This will hopefully feel like playing the original game, just with a more modern engine. There have been times that I have forgotten I'm not playing the original and have tried to use Exult commands while testing in Oblivion.

I've put a kinda-website up now, including some screenshots. Needs a lot of work, but this isn't exactly the time of year for sitting at home on the computer doing this stuff.

Looking good so far. Ultima 7 was one of my all time favorite games, even though I never did manage to complete Serpent Isle. Got stuck on some quest that I didn't know was timed and ended up blocking progress.

Serpent Isle doesn't have any timed quests... Maybe you ran into the same issue I did when I first played it. I couldn't find a secret door I needed to use, which prevented me from finding one of the main plot areas (the second Wall of Lights). I wasn't able to finish it until years later when I found out about the secret door.

Hmm. You sure? The quest involving Frigidazi (sp?) ? I distinctly remember having done what needed to be done and then coming back to find out she was gone because I took too long. It held up the game's progression. It's been years though so who knows. I could very well be mixing up stuff from different games.

There shouldn't have been any problems with that... Oh well. If there was some weird issue, at least it won't be in my remake

The mint quest, right? I think I remember that too.

Yeah, there were a couple ways to bug out Frigidazi before/after the Mountains of Freedom bit. I lost a good chunk of a game once to what's probably the same bug.

I'll be watching this. Serpent Isle is my favorite game of all time.

Wow, best news of the new year! Ultima 7 part 1 and 2 with expansions were my favorite PC games ever.

ThePal, do you plan on doing the Silver Serpent add on as well?

Ok. So I went a little insane. I saw the Immersive Interiors mod and thought "That looks cool. I should do that to Monitor today." Let me tell you, making an interior version of a city the size of Monitor is mind-numbing. The entire thing has to be made up of models instead of using the landscape editor, which requires exact placement of thousands of pieces of "ground".

Anyway, it seems I can forget it now, since I finished it all in the one day. For those that aren't familiar with Immersive Interiors, it lets you see out through interior windows to the city and such outside. This is now possible throughout Monitor. I've added some screenshots to my http://www.etherealsoftware.com.au/ultima/media.html.

Thanks. I took a strange pleasure in using Shamino as my guinea pig when constructing it.

I only noticed this just now (likely due to the fact that I rarely drop by the Oblivion section :-) ). I loved the Ultima series, U7 Black Gate and U8 in particular. I still think the U7 and U8 dungeons are superior to anything you find in Morrowind or Oblivion. They were places you actually wanted to explore as you never knew what might be around the corner.

Very cool project, Thepal!
