EDIT: yes, I cheated; I just took screenies of the icons before Hrnchamd fixed them. :hehe:

.:Readme:.
Name: Ultimate Icon Replacer
Version: 1.0
Date: 2/2/2011
Category: Miscellaneous
Author: Alaisiagae

Description
===========
Replaces all Morrowind object/inventory icons with better icons!

Details
=======
This mod replaces all 600+ icons for all the stuff you can put in your inventory in Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon! The icons are remade to reduce the amount of empty space in the icon, and to increase item clarity. Also includes a download for people using Lurlock's Left Gloves mod or my own Left Gloves Addon mod so that your leftified gloves/gauntlets/bracers/pauldrons can have new icons, too!

Oodles of thanks to Hrnchamd for rescuing this project!

+ Pluginless replacer (please see "incompatibility" section for potential conflicts)

- you can easily remove any icon you don't like by deleting it.

- there might be some extra icons in there (like the large kwama egg). Feel free to use it however you want (it won't appear in-game unless you use an .esp. I also suggest renaming it!)

- does not include some of the more obscure items not seen in-game, such as the ball-and-shackles and the Devourer artifact book. Check the screenies to see what is included in this mod.

Install
=======
1. Extract the files to a temporary location.
2. Examine the folder structure and make corrections where necessary.
3. Copy files to (install folder)\Morrowind\Data Files\
4. Start Morrowind and play.

Uninstall
=========
Delete the stuff in your icon folder. Hint: look for icons last modified January 2011.

Upgrade
=======
1. Uninstall the old mod.
2. Install the new mod.
3. Start Morrowind and play. There is no effect on saved games and should not corrupt any saves.

Incompatibility
===============
This mod will conflict with all mods that modify the same icons. This includes pluginless replacers! If you don't want to overwrite the icons from your pluginless replacers, then delete the ones from my mod. I highly suggest backing up all the icons added by mods in your Icons subfolders.

If you drag and drop my Icons folder into DataFiles, you will only be prompted to overwrite the subfolders - if you click "yes" then it will automatically overwrite not only the subfolder but all its contents, which means you might accidentally overwrite a mod's pluginless icon replacement. TO AVOID THIS: extract my mod to a temporary location. Copy all icons in folder Icons\a and paste into the Morrowind\Data Files\Icons\a folder. If asked to overwrite, decide which icon(s) you want (mine or a mod's) and click the appropriate option. Do this method with all the icons in my mod's subfolders. Good luck!

Known Issues or Bugs

Wow these look really good, Alaisiagae! :goodjob:

I think I should throw in this idea I've heard somewhere once - I'm not sure who came up with it though - to give left and right gauntlets, bracers, gloves, and pauldrons different icons which can be easily identified on sight. I think an optional plugin that did that could improve the recognizability of items even further.

Lurlock did this with MW gloves/gauntlets/bracers/pauldrons, including leftified ground meshes for said items. I expanded upon those with my Left Gloves Addon mod to include TB and BM pieces. I have included, as an optional download, new versions of those icons, too. :) You'll need the .esp from Lurlock's mod (if you don't have TB and BM), or from my own mod (if you have both expansions).

EDIT: I also have new (better) groundmeshes for some of the pauldrons; pauldrons that previously only had the clavicle (CL) mesh for the gnd mesh now have the UA mesh too. I have to test them in-game, because I'm not sure if what I've done won't cause things to screw up royally. Once I test it, I'll make them into a mod.

Oh, right! Sorry, I should sometimes consider reading the readme before tossing around ideas. :facepalm:

On the upside, those are great news. :hehe:

Always good to have optimised textures, even the small ones. Now my eyes won't bleed when I check my inventory.

These are looking great. Thanks!

I think the only one I'll not use is the Sload Soap one. To me, it looks too much like a blob, instead of a bar you can hold in your hand.
But otherwise, excellent job.

Great work, installed! :twirl:
Just a nitpicking note: using Morrowind Textures Compress & Reorder AKA http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Utilities.Detail&id=76 I've found some icons still in RGB format that could be compressed.
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\a_boots_apostle.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_boot.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_greaves.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_grove.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_m_chest.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_m_helmet.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_pauldron.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)
Compressed: RGB => DXT3 = icons\a\ice_shield.dds (4Kb => 1Kb)

Yes, but DXT compression affects the colour quality of these icons severely (I compressed them). You technically shouldn't DXT compress normal maps, textures with text on them and other stuff for the same reason.

It looks more block-like against the semi-transparent inventory background. Because the texture's four corner edges are darkened, the eye has a difficult time distinguishing their outline against the black background generated by IrfanView as a substitute for a transparent background. You can see it in http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6203/mgescreenshot67.jpg. If I do make an update for this mod at some point, I'll revise the sload soap so that it is more like how I made the emerald and ruby icons (i.e. aligned on the diagonal to preserve the rectangular shape).

Looking forward to using this!

I noticed the pathways for your lefty icon replacer and your left gloves addon mod are different. For example:

Icons\Lefty\TX_A_gauntlet_fists_L.dds (left gloves addon mod)
Icons\a\lefty\tx_a_gauntlet_fists_L.dds (replacer)

Should they be the same?

yes, they should be the same. My apologies for messing up the folder structure! D: I shall re-upload that .zip with the correct folder pathways.

:epic facepalm: I totally messed up the Lefty stuff - missing files, incorrect files names. I have fixed all that now, yay! But now my readme says the version is 1.q instead of 1.1, but that is preferable to having files that don't work. :teehee: If there are problems, let me know, okay?
