Ulysses Hates the courier?

Post » Wed Aug 03, 2011 4:52 am

I think that Ulysses wants the courier dead from what I have heard and seen. But he could also need the courier for help. But I want you're thoughts of what kind of relationship he has with the courier.

There is really not enough to go by either way.

He seems angry, but baiting in writing has been going on for a long time. We ll just have to wait and see what it is all about.

Ulysses was meant to have the courier's but declined when he saw his name on the manifest, pointing to him wanting the courier dead. After word spreads about the courier, he begins searching for him. This was when he freed the girl in dead money who's name I can't remember. He not only saves her from the main [censored] bag in Dead money who's name I can't remember, but he also convinces her to keep tracking the [censored] bag using the courier as someone who has affected his own life who he is looking for.
What I'm worried about is that Ulysses doesn't sound so bad. So if he wants the courier dead, then that may end up kind of fleshing out your character as a bit of a dike.

I think it would make for a hilarious anti-climix if Ulysses' interest in the Courier turned out to be something trivial. Like, perhaps they once dined at the same restaurant, and when the Courier got up to leave, he threw on Ulysses's coat on by mistake. So, Ulysses just wants his coat back.

On a more serious note, Chris Avellone has said the following about Ulysses which has piqued my curiosity:

"I also have a lot of love for Ulysses in Fallout, only because I like the idea of someone hunting my player for reasons of his own, and then hearing the reasons why… and realizing how important even the smallest of my actions are for the people of the wasteland – living or dead".

It's that last bit that raised my eyebrows. He seemed compelled to qualify his statement there, and I think the final revelations about the relationship between Courier and Ulysses will hinge on that "living or dead" part. Some action that the Courier took in the past (and likely something that the Courier didn't think was particularly significant at the time) that somehow affected a person (or people) who were no longer alive.

He's guessing, and its not a bad guess. The unexpected sibling (brother or sister) is one of the great tropes of many an epic story. Darth Vader turning out to be Luke's father is a another example. Ulysses and the Courier are the same age, so if they are unexpectedly related, they would have to be brothers. Peter F. Hamilton's recent Void trilogy has two main characters who unexpectedly turn out to be brothers in the end. Its an idea that gets used a lot in epic literature.

Then you learn that their parents were progressive in more ways than adoption right?

Precisely, which is why I'm absolutely confident it won't be that. It's the least original thing you could do, and it doesn't fit at all with Avellone's comment. He makes it pretty clear that this is all about something the Courier did.

Ulysses hates the Courier because when they were children, the Courier called Ulysses a poopy head.

I don't know if this has been said before, as I haven't been on here recently, but does the fact that the cook at McCarren mistook you for someone who looks like you have anything to do with Ulysses?
If you and Ulysses were related, then there would be a chance that the two of you would look similar - or be twins, even.
Personally, I like to believe that every line within the game holds some gravity, and that one has not been played upon, nor resolved. to my knowledge.

Given that you can design your character to be a blond-haired Caucasian female if you'd like, then it seems rather unlikely someone might mistake you for Ulysses.

The cook mistakes you for a health inspector.

He's black with dreadlocks. I don't see how he could look anything like 90% of people's courier.

Maybe - now, this could just be thinking far too outside the box, as I tend to do - the appearance of Ulysses could alter based upon what your specific courier looks like. Now, it is guaranteed that he is male and has a 10-pack-a-day voice, but it is not unheard of for a brother and sister to be similar in appearance. Also, if the courier and Ulysses are the same age, coupled with the possible fact that they are related, they could be twins.

I, personally, do not want to see these two characters biologically related in any manner; but you can't rule out any possibility.

Ulysses has already been designed. He's an African-American male. I think it's more sensible to dispose of the "cook mistaking you for Ulysses" theory rather than continue to entertain it with the addition of an "Ulysses has chameleon-like powers" theory.

Yes, but once we eliminate the impossible, all that remains is the truth.

Now, one more impossibility (the two character's being siblings) is crossed off the list by exploring how it could be logical, then showing proof that it is not.

That is, unless someone has proof to back-up my outlandish theory.

Kindly speak like you would if you weren't auditioning for a role in the next Star Trek film, please. Back-up your theory? I'm not even sure what your theory is at this point, now that you've confused it with this "exploring how it could be logical then showing proof that it is not." business.
