Ulysses Theory that I hope is in right thread (some spoilers

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 11:18 am

I realize this is a little stupid, and I can tell you right now that I do have a life. It just doesn't take up all 24 hours of the day and I have a lot of time to think and ponder. Ever since I first played Fallout I've wondered about that one playing card character from the collector's edition that I could not find in game. Ulysses. After my first play through I frantically searched the internet for the answer , only to find he had been removed from the game. This was upsetting, until I found out that he was to play a very important part in future DLC. So I waited for Dead Money. This only made my interest grow. A battle? The Divide? What could it mean? The that small tidbit in Honest Hearts. At first I didn't think much of it, but then just this past week I played Old World Blues and found that cave. This very night my imagination exploded with inspired thought and theory. Just to vent, I've decided to post it here.

On a ranch, somewhere south of the Las Vegas ruins, a man and his wife set up a life of their own. They grew crops, raised big horn, and the man even protected his nearby neighbors to the south from raiders. Then one day so strange people in power armor emerged from the west. The called themselves the Brotherhood of Steel and they were lead by a man named Elijah. They searched the man's ranch for technology, but found nothing of interest. So he and his wife were left alone. For a few years the man watched from the distance as the BoS attempted to start the nearby solar arrays, and he was inspired by the sight. His felt a great pride that these people were trying to bring life back to Mojave desert. That pride would soon come to an end. More people emerged from the west, this time under the flag of the two headed bear. They drove the BoS from the solar array and some fled toward the man and his ranch. They sought to hide there but the man refused, fearing they would only bring destruction from this NCR. In the incurring fight, the man's wife was shot by one of the young knights. The knights fled fearing the shot would draw attention, leaving the man and wife there alone. The man attempted to save her but to no avail. She passed away, and was buried on the ranch. The man spent days drinking by her grave when a troop of NCR soldiers came looking for the BoS knights. The man found his way to get revenge on the knights, by joining the NCR and tracking them down. He was sent further was into a territory uncharted since before the war. While exploring the ruins with his fellow NCR, the troop found an old military base. Thinking the BoS might seek refuge there, they searched it. There was no trace of the BoS, but instead they found an cache of nuclear warheads and a prototype for a device that could control the weather. For a few more years the man and his fellow troops were ordered to protect the facility until further research could be done. Over time he lost his thirst for revenge in the stale routine of duty and became a simple, garden variety soldier. He saw in the NCR what he once saw in the BoS. A chance to bring life back to the Mojave and maybe even the once proud country of America. Again his hopes would be dashed away by one single mistake. Sometime after the facility was brought back up to full working order, the NCR had to develop a way to reactivate the weather machine. The scientists that were just starting up at the new NCR base known as Camp McCarran, developing a digital key that would unlock the system. Fearing that their new enemy from across the Dam or some remnant BoS soldiers would steal it, they thought of a way for it to be delivered in confidence. The Mojave Express. The man greeted this Courier as he approached the gates and lead him to the leader of his troop to deliver the code. Neither knowing of the secret the package contained. The Courier was offered a bed to rest in which the man lead him to, and then the man returned to his post. When the lead scientist activated the weather machine, a terrible thing occurred. The machine went out of control, causing massive tornadoes and earthquakes to happen. One of the nuclear warheads, thought to be deactivated was set off. Destroying to base and all in it. Except for that one man. When he awoke to destruction, he was once again faced with a horrible truth. This time the NCR was no good to save this world, and now his thirst for revenge came back. This time he sought those responsible for all destruction in the Mojave. The BoS and the NCR became his enemies, but he also sought someone who would protect and even revive the great splendor that was the idea of America. Traveling back to the Mojave he encountered spies of the Legion, he was able to fight them off until one came up behind him and knocked him out. They brought him before Caesar and he offered to man a position as a Frumentarii. He accepted but only to be given the freedom and materials to search for his own answers. Caesar named him Ulysses and assigned him to infiltrate the Mojave Express as a courier. After a few deliveries that got him close to both NCR territory and the spectacle of Mr. House's New Vegas, the man found himself in Primm to acquire a job that would get him in with Mr. House himself. Only to find a familiar name on the list, a name he thought had died years ago. Ulysses finally decided to set his final plan into motion. He told Nash to give to job to this courier in hopes that he would get killed out of fear that this courier would be able to stop him. While traveling to the Big Empty, Ulysses heard of a courier that had survived being shot in the head near Goodsprings. He decided then that he would have to take care of the courier himself. In the Big Empty, Ulysses sought answers to weather machine he encountered in what was now called the Divide, but he found something more. A woman by the name of Christine was trapped in a machine that was tampering with her head. He rescued her, and when she told him of her hunt for Elijah, he remembered what had happened to his wife. Within the records at the Big Empty, Ulysses learned of the deadly experiments at the Sierra Madre Casino, and decided to send Elijah there to end his life. When he told Christine of this she decided to follow Elijah, Ulysses would not stop her for he too knew what it felt like to be "looking for someone." When he found the answers he sought in the Big Empty, Ulysses headed back to the Divide, with only one stop. To send a message to that courier he sought revenge upon for his unknown hand in Ulysses final hope in humanity and the American idea. This is where the Lonesome Road begins.

Hey its just a theory and I'll admit its weak in a few places, but there are a few things I'd like to point out.
Wolfhorn Ranch is a hop skip and jump away from Helios One, which makes it possible that some BoS members could have ran that direction in the fight against NCR.
There is a grave at the Wolfhorn Ranch which is Ulysses' supposed original location.
Joshua Graham was excepting a Frumentarii traveling as a courier, he said that the courier sought the enemies of Caesar but that could have been misinformation.
There are several weather control machines in game. One in the Big Empty and one that hides Hidden Valley near Scorpion Gulch in the Mojave.
Ulysses' seeks the courier for his involvement in whatever happened in the Divide. Whether he was aware of that action or not.
And, the most important thing I'd like to point out, is that this is a theory. Please don't tear me apart and call me an idiot. I've been a big fan of Obsidian since Sith Lords and an even bigger fan of Bethesda since Morrowind. Hell, I live in Maryland. When I first played Fallout 3 I fell in love with games all over again. Fallout New Vegas was the first game I preordered months in advance. It was the first time I woke up at 5 am to travel to another part of the state to get my preorder. (I had moved away several months earlier and didn't want to cancel it.) I have loved every second of it. The story line, the choices, the characters. Yeah there have been those moments when the screen would freeze and I'd lose ten minutes of play because I rely heavily on autosave. There have been the delays, the patches, the moving around the state (me not the game) and yes even the terrible hacking occurence that plagued my PS3. I didn't get my info stolen but I still had to wait for Honest Hearts. But above all else this is the only time I've waited, and pondered, and checked, and rechecked the wiki for those dates that would finally give me the answers. And tonight when I saw that September date, and those screenshots, and those words. It all came together in one big flash of light. I love New Vegas, it has to be the only game I've given this much attention since KOTOR. This is my love for the game and love for story making coming together in one big gushy fan bile. So please be kind to me. I'm just a lonely dork that loves his game.

That was alot to read... but i read every bit.

Its and interesting theory you got there, you told it like a story too, so it kept me interested. The way obsidian has set this up... i could just kill them. But i love it, it keeps you wondering, and eager for the "That DLC came out a year after release i am not gonna buy it" stuff... which you then buy.

I have yet to complete the game 100%, and i picked up the game the day it came out, i keep finding new things i have yet to discover, or a new DLC to play, or even just a nice time role playing or gambling.

nerd and dork here <----- liked the story and theory. im still kinda personally going with that Ulysses real name is Bill calhoun, which would explain why ulysses was working for ceaser, and as far as Ulysses wanting Courier dead/to fight.....maybe Ulysses wife was working/living in the divide and the courier accidently messed up the weather system and/or delivered the news of Ulysses' wife death to him resulting ulysses to shot the courier in the head and leave him for dead, and ulysses goes on a journey to gather information on how to turn off the machine, wanting to speak with MrHouse since hes lived prewar he wants to deliver the chip to get inside, but is shocked to see the courier's name on the list and lets the courier deliver the package knowing the dangers will kill him. crossing mrHouse off the list, he travels to distance areas coming across the Siere madre, after creeping around seeing the tech wonders, he finds out the stuff come from the big empty, sets off there. in owbs, after finally gathering the information on how to stop the machine, he sets off to the divide. During his travels to the divide, he hears that the courier is still alive, so he discides that maybe the courier can atone by fixing the mess he created in first place before he dies.

thats my theory in a nutshell, and i have no idea where patriotism falls into that lol so im problemly wrong.

Ulysses believes the only way to start fresh, is to rid the plaque called New Vegas from the map.

During the Great War no bombs hit New Vegas Directly, thanks to Mr. House. In turn, New Vegas grew to become the Sin City, it once was. Ulysses figured if you where to re-build the world on sin, you were only bound to fall again. So he set out to find a way to stop Mr. House from rebuilding New Vegas.

He did not wish to give Mr. House the Platinum Chip, for he knew it would make him stronger. He saw your name, and knew you where to weak, and would surly fail.

He traveled far into the Big Empty, and located Big Mountain (Which is actually a Crater).

After being taken prisoner, he talked his way out, and escaped shortly after encountering Christina. (That is her name right?)

He had found out about the Divide, and the events that occurred there, while being imprisoned by the robots. He also found out about his key to riding the world of New Vegas, 1 unexploded nuclear bomb.

He set out to find this bomb, and eventually found it. There was only one problem, He needed the launch codes.

He then heard about you, and how you survived.

He figured if you could survive a shot to the head, then make it to New Vegas, you could probably get his launch codes.

So he sends a message through the radio, calling for you to deliver a set of codes from a Pre War U.S Military Base. (Where you get the Military coat)

You then must trek through the un forgiving terrain of the Divide, and locate Ulysses at the launch area. There is where you confront him, and in order to save New Vegas, you must stop him... or join him.

Never read stupidiest thing. No offense intended... but someone needs to say it.

Edit : wastelander24's "theory" makes much more sense. Still not explaining how Ulysse could know your name in the first place...

Still not explaining how Ulysse could know your name in the first place...

Here is the story.

When you were young, you lived with only your mother & brother. Your mother died shortly after you where born, leaving your brother to take care of you. As you both grew up you took on jobs, trying to sustain a living in the dangerous world.

You both found that the job of being a Courier was best. You separated ways at the age of 17, and began to go about life on your own. Your brother was older, and more skilled... but he began to resent you, he blamed you for your mothers death.

Your brother is Ulysses.

Eventually Ulysses joined up with the Mojave Express. One of his last assignments was to take a package to Mr. House in New Vegas... the land in which Ulysses comes to hate.

As he scanned the names of the other Couriers, he saw your name. He told them to give you the job, knowing it could be the end of you, and his revenge would be served.

Those could be stasis pods for robots like the one Fisto came out of

Interesting story made by the OP, but remember in OWB, Ulysses's recording clearly states he has never made any real contact with any BOS members before. Also, if he desired revenge against Elija, why not kill him when they met in the Big MT when he had the chance?

to be honest, i think that everyone who actually reads these forums are gonna be disappointed with how it ends, its either going to be not enuf or its going to be too much where it breaks the players backstory that he/she created for the toon. plz plz prove me wrong and make me eat my words obsidian, as far as storys u do great, i just want to actually end this game on a great note, seeing how due to constant pushbacks on release dates, i got one last full playthru if LR is up to par, before skyrim comes out and NV prob gathers dusts on my harddrive.

Thank you for all the positive feedback and I apologize for the spacing and what not of the original post. It was really late at night and I was tired

To all you nay sayers out there, its just a theory
and it's certainly not a perfect one.

Here is some filler for some questions and my opinions on other people's ideas I saw.

Why didn't he just kill Elijah in Big MT?
* Obviously I could be wrong about the Helios One thing, but
let's say I wasn't. He could see Elijah as an indirect cause
of his wife's demise (I did say it was a Knight who killed her.)
Thus, he makes it so that he indirectly kills Elijah.

The picture with the supposed stasis pods.
*they look like they could either be Auto-Docs, robot pods, or even just
objects in the room to add something for realism like fuel canisters
or power pylons.

The brothers theory.
* You as the Courier are not aware of your involvement with Ulysses.
You'd obviously be aware of your involvement with him if he was your
brother. Chris Avellone has stated "I also have a lot of love for Ulysses in Fallout, only because
I like the idea of someone hunting my player for reasons of his own, and then hearing the
reasons why… and realizing how important even the smallest of my actions are for the people of the wasteland – living or dead"

Someone has pointed out that Ulysses has never had contact with the BoS directly before
meeting Christina. This clearly shoots a hole through my theory. If i were to reevaluate
my ideas with this bit of knowledge then I'd say that maybe it wasn't a knight that killed his
wife. She could have just died or was killed by someone else (not the courier that's a bit much and I would hate my character for that)
and he lost hope so he joined the NCR to escape New Vegas. The reason he sent Elijah to the Sierra Madre
was purely to get him away from anyone he could do harm to (which didn't exactly end up being the case)
and he didn't just kill him because he isn't a savage and had no reason to do it.

Then again it's only outside of the game that we know that Ulysses owned the Wolfhorn ranch. As
far as I can tell no one has mentioned him owning it and you haven't found some piece
of paper that says so in the game. If I'm wrong about that please tell me. He could just be some
insane genius who's life was ruined by the courier in some small way. He joined the Legion
just so he'd have freedom to move around as he liked. Became a courier as a disguise to travel within
NCR territories and to get past check points. Who knows if he's even from the Divide, he could have
just found out about its weather machine to get past it and to a nuclear warhead he heard
was still active.

Again its just theory, some of what we have been told could just be red herrings. Let's just hope it isn't
something too far over the top.

Tonight is the night we shall find out what is what and who is who.
I don't care if I'm close or not even in the same state as the right answer, I just hope its not a major let down.
I also hope I actually have time to play before I have to go to work. I'll post my reactions wednesday so I don't
risk exposing myself to any answers to those who wish to spoil it. See you then.

Remember that this is just a game. Speculation on this scale has no purpose no matter how well thought. If the DLC itself won't tell us something, we'll never know it and as far as the story is concerned, it never happened.

I recommend you either quit wasting precious sleeping time on this and, perhaps, write your own fanfic or think about more sensible things when you go to sleep. If you can't get sleep and only thing that pleases you is thinking about fictional events, there are always sleeping pills.

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
