From my understanding, Umaril who (not so) simply bound his soul to one of Meridia's Aurorans.

In short, Umaril is an Alyeid sorcerer-king who made a pact with Meridia that resulted in him becoming a daedra (or at least daedra-like).

to clarify: a Lesser Daedra, not a Daedric Prince.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ayleids

Umaril was half ayleid... his mother was an Ayleid and his father some kind of divine being... He made a pact with Meridia wich allowed him to go to the waters of Oblivion to live again... aurarons are daedra of Meridia, commanded by Umaril....

BTW... he's called Umaril, not Umaral....

Umaril was the Champion of the Slavemasters - the most powerful battle-mage of the old Ayleid Empire of Sorcerer Kings. He was not a typical Ayleid. His mother was Ayleid but his father was some nondescript godlike being of a previous Kalpa. Possibly of Aedric origin but unknown. The circumstances of his parentage caused him to be born a gigantic, muscular being with a body type different from that of the delicate featured Ayleids. This is probably a reference to the biblical http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nephilim who were said to be sinful giants created from the unnatural union of angels and human females. These beings were also associated with evil and Satan, which brings us to our next personality aspect of Umaril - he made a pact with a Daedric Prince, Meridia, which bolstered his already considerable powers and more importantly gave him power over his own death, allowing him to resurrect after a certain amount of time in a new body if his physical form was destroyed.

And they say oblivion didn't care about lore!

Umaril the Unfeathered was a half Ayleid that signed a pact with Meridia (as has been said) that gave him power over Aurorans and let him basically revive himself. His living history is mainly concerned with being an antagonist to Pelinal and Alessia during the Rebellion, being killed by our favorite half Akatosh half Lorkhan time travelling god avatar (he is even more confusing, just know that most of his lore is based off accounts of his Ayleid adversaries or his human companions and later generations that practically worshipped him, and is therefore rather untrustworthy).

Are the wings, then, a legacy of his father or Meridia? He appears to have them, though they lack feathers, obviously.

They may be an anatomical feature of his and another reference to Nephilim and fallen angels of mythology, or perhaps it's an Ayleid thing. A lot of Ayleid statues are depicted with wings. Birds and wings seem to be a cultural feature of the ancient Ayleid Empire before it fell to ruin. They're the exact same color as his armor. It's unknown if his cuirass has holes in the back and they're his actual wings or if they're just an ornamental piece of armor.

edit: Upon closer inspection from all angles it just looks like his armor was crafted with ornamental spikes which resemble naked wings. It's probably meant to be a slightly OOC symbolism regarding Nephalim, the gigantic sons and daughters of disgraced angels. No Dev or official source of lore has ever mentioned Nephalim in regards to Umaril or the Ayleids but considering the similarities in the story I'd consider it a likely inspiration.

How he looks in KotN is probably not how he looked back then (although the image in the book suggest otherwise :P).. I guess he's a bit misshaped for being for quite some while in Meridia's realm.. after all he's just a big Auroran, wich are daedra not ayleids...

He's a fallen angel. Not just as a reference.

A loose somewhat fictional explanation based on my study on http://www.imperial-library.info/fsg/prowelerarticle3.shtml. Some one ought to make a proper story out of it. :)

Mer frequently see themselves as descendants from the Get of Aetherius and they yearn for a return towards it. The statue of the Elven Soldier with the bird rising up from his shoulders symbolizes this. So in a way people were birds before they became stuck in the mud of the world. Below the soldier in the mud, there is Oblivion and it's devils. Umaril too once was a bird, but he sold his soul to Meridia and she tore his feathers of as she dragged him down through the mud into Oblivion.

An inverse Icarus really.

Not enough symbolism to play with in those. Well that and idea that mortals once were gods that lost their power, stuck on a piece of rock in the sea of Oblivion is a bit of an overarching theme in the Monomyth. (Nevermind half a dozen real world religions. ) :P

The only other interesting statue is Sithis as it pegs Lorkhan as the grim reaper, solving allot of idiocy but that one is kinda obvious.
