They should give it an awesome special effect. Umbra means shadow in Latin I think so it would be awesome if it caused a shroud of shadow to form around the player, making him almost invisible and really terrifying, lowering the morale of anyone it approached.

Umbra is clearly a warriors blade, not a stealth blade. I believe that name is chosen because the sword has a "soul", or a "shadow" of an actual person.

Im not talking about using the shadow to hide, as a moving shroud of darkness is pretty easy to see. I agree with it being a warriors blade but I think it needs to have a darker nature, and stirring fear in enemies would be a great way to achieve this,

Oh yea I wouldn't mind some kind of effect on the wielder, but perhaps a smake shadow image thing is over doing it a bit?. Maybe just half glowing smokey eyes?

If skyrim is gonna follow the pattern of morrowind and oblivion then lots of the artifact level weapons armor and items will make a comeback. Goldenbrand was in both, so was umbra and they were always the same form a one handed fiery longsword you got from a daedric shrine quest (boethieths? ) and a two handed soul svcking claymore from the character umbra. Lots of those kickass items will show up i bet

I should hope so...though perhaps the person wielding Umbra could be a larger part of the overall story...?

I believe "umbra" means "shadow" in Latin.

I believe Umbra is the darkest part of a shadow and Penumbra is, well, the other...part...I might be wrong.

Of course its returning umbra always comes back to find a new master. I remember when i saw umbra in morrowind i was a level 3 exploring and it was an mistake trying to actually fight him 2 hitter quitter and i was out it was originally a two handed blade. The umbra in oblivion looked like the old ebony blade from morrowind look at both of them and see.

@SyphuuR: Correct about Umbra

I'd want it back, two handed considering it's power. Maybe you start quest by finding a replica. Then some searching and book lookups, and you eventually track down who was supposed to have it. Check with family and person who had it went never came back from a dungeon crawl. You get the location of the dungeon, and after tracking through it you find nothing. Outside however, an avalanche has moved some rocks where you can find a corpse with Umbra, still well hidden. Not all things, especially these extreme things, should be obvious.

Two handed definitely, and I'm usually in the Oblivion camp. Want it to remind me of Stormbringer, the Stealer of Souls, from the Elric Books.

I don't know if there have been a thread about this before, but as far as I know umbra had a role in the Infernal City novel. I don't know exactly what happened to umbra, but is there a chance that it might return? And if it return would you have it as a one-handed or two-handed version?

The person Umbra was in the novel, not the sword.

I'd rather they added new things for us to discover than re-using things from past games.

Yeah, but it's kind of a tradition and it will keep the lore geeks happy. Just imagine the spam on the forums if it isn't in.

I don't think the "lore geeks" would be too bothered. I doubt there's anything pointing to Umbra's existence in Skyrim at this time. In fact, they could probably come up with a list of unique items which are far more suited to the setting.

Personally, I was quite disappointed when Umbra came up in Oblivion. It felt more like a cheap rehashed version of something from Morrowind than something that was really Oblivion's own. I really hope they don't continue it on into Skyrim, completely destroying any novelty worth it once had.

Based on the book, I highly doubt Umbra will return.

If it does return, they better reference the events in the Infernal City. :)
