Ummm... TESCS (Oblivion) version?

Post » Sun Nov 07, 2010 12:30 pm

I ordered Morrowind GOTY, Oblivion GOTY last Loredas... Oblivion will arrive TOMORROW. (I've been on hiatus from The Elder Scrolls since 2003).

I've been preparing. Downloaded patches, mods, tutorials, etc.

I've dowloaded the TES:CS (Oblivion).

A LITTLE confused. There were three files at gamesas. TES Version 1.2.404, PATCH 1.2.404, and Version 1.0

(1) Ummm... any reason to keep version 1? (see below for description COPIED / PASTED from gamesas).

(2) That PATCH 1.2.404... is that a patch FOR TESCS 1.2.404 (to fix problems w/ 1.2.404),
or a patch to PATCH (older versions) UP TO 1.2.404?

PASTED from the relevant page at gamesas:

OBLIVION TES Construction Set

TES CONSTRUCTION SET v1.2.404

Installer (7.0 MB) //static.gamesas.com/utilities/tes_construction_set_1.2.404.exe

Patch (3.2 MB) //static.gamesas.com/utilities/patch_tes_construction_set_v1.2.404.exe

Read release notes here.

Use CS version 1.2 to modify Shivering Isles content or Knights of the Nine content.

The Construction Set allows you to create your own content for Oblivion. It only works with the PC version of the
game. For more info, visit the TES CS wiki.

TES CONSTRUCTION SET v1.0

Installer (6.3 MB) /static.gamesas.com/ob-const-set/oblivion-construction-set.exe

Use CS version 1.0 to create mods that can be run on unpatched versions of Oblivion or to create lip synch files
for voiced dialogue.

The Construction Set allows you to create your own content for Oblivion. It only works with the PC version of
the game. For more info, visit the TES CS wiki.

Okay, you are getting the GOTY edtion of Oblivion,? Then in that case it is fully patched and you dont need to worry about it.

For gerenal modding you only need the TES CONSTRUCTION SET v1.2.404 from here: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_utilities.htm

Install that. The reason the original v1.0 CS is still up is that the Lip sync doesnt work in 1.2.404. so some peoplevoicing characters will swap between versions.

da mage;

Thanks...

Since Oblivion will be new to me (it will be delivered to my door today... I just checked, the package arrived in my city about 20 minutes ago), I guess I will keep V1.0. I don't know *yet* how much modding I will be doing, or whether I will eventually need to experiment with Lip Sync. It won't hurt to go ahead and archive it.

About that patch... so I ASSUME that the 3.2 Mb "patch_tes_construction_set_v1.2.404.exe" is to patch V1.0 to 1.2.404... and therefore I don't need it if I download and install the "tes_construction_set_1.2.404.exe"?

I hate to be picky, but the website isn't ABSOLUTELY clear.... I.E. something like "Use this to patch V1.0 to V1.2.404" or "Use this patch with 1.2.404 to correct some bugs".

Okay... someone else already asked the question (search forum for "patch");

I think that the answer "I SUPPOSE you download and run both" is kind of insufficient.

I emailed gamesas tech support. Fast reply, but disappointing. "The construction set for Oblivion is unsupported. Read the wiki".

Sheesh.

And the wiki doesn't say.

The root cause of the problem is the website layout.

The download link for the patch is RIGHT BELOW the download link for the installer. Then after some whitespace, you have version 1.0.

But it isn't logical that a patch NAMED 1.2.404 would be applied *** TO *** an installer named 1.2.404.

Help?

I get the same confusion from looking at the download links at the Oblivion Construction Set Wiki.

On the download page:

The Construction Set v1.2
Installer (7.0 MB) (links to http://static.gamesas.com/utilities/tes_construction_set_1.2.404.exe)
Patcher (3.2 MB) (inks to http://static.gamesas.com/utilities/patch_tes_construction_set_v1.2.404.exe)
Release Notes (links to http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_utilitiesnotes1.htm)

The latest version of the Construction Set is v1.2. This was released after the Shivering Isles ...

( a paragraph of stuff )

then...

The Construction Set v1.0
Installer (6.3 MB) (links to http://static.gamesas.com/ob-const-set/oblivion-construction-set.exe)

The original Construction Set released to the public. Useful for ...

So okay, can someone please state definitively whether "patch_tes_construction_set_v1.2.404.exe" is specifically used to patch OLDER versions of the CS up to 1.2.404? ** OR ** is it used * ON * 1.2.404 after it was installed with tes_construction_set_1.2.404.exe to correct bugs?

- Thanks

Ok, I try it...
  • Installer v1.2: Installs the latest version of the CS.
  • Patch: Patches an installed CS from version 1.0 to v1.2(I tested it for you :goodjob: )
  • Installer v1.0: Installs the first version of the CS.

You normally use v1.2 to generate a plugin, because most people use the latest Oblivion-version, which can only handle plugins from CS 1.2.

The CS 1.0 is needed to create lip-files. This files are needed, if you wish that NPCs move their lips while talking.
But now you have a problem. CS v1.0 can't open plugins made with v1.2. And CS v1.2 can't open plugins made with v1.0.

So you have to do it like that:
  • Create plugin in v1.2 and do whatever you want.
  • Save
  • Patch the version-entry
  • Open the plugin in CS 1.0 and create lip-files
  • Save
  • Patch the version-entry back to v1.2

If http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_utilitiesnotes1.htm are all changes between the versions, you can also create your plugin in version 1.0 and patch it at the end. This saves a little bit time.

_DICE_;

Yes, I finally found a reference that pretty much answered my question this afternoon... in some old * announcements* on the Elder Scrolls site, pretty much indicated the *specific* nature & purpose of those files.

Thanks for your efforts.

I would have posted earlier, but both of my orders for Morrowind GOTY and Oblivion GOTY were delivered by late this afternoon. I installed them both and I have been checking them out to make sure everything is OK (it is; had to make sure, I have a Vista64 machine).

Now I have been up all night playing with Oblivion. Made a few minor mistakes for character development (example Dunmer Spellsword, specializes in Heavy Armor, but I chose a "Light Raiment" for the Arena). No big deal, I'm still learning and having a blast with it. When I decide to knuckle down and generate a serious character it will be a custom class.

What you say about the CS sounds very complicated. I'm going to hold off on installing it... it would be a while before I make any of my own mods anyway, at least until I have played most of the quests through a couple of times.

I wonder if they will fix 1.2? .... might be better to wait for at least 1 or 2 new versions anyway ...

No, they will not fix it.
So you have to use both versions if you want that NPCs move lips while talking.
If you can ignore that, you can work with the CS 1.2 and don't have to worry about patching plugins.

The patch is useless

Its to update CS v1.0 so that there is no need to go through an uninstall process If you install CS V1.2 over CS V1.0 You will have to use the Installer twice before you Have Installed it. The first time is to uninstall CS V1.0 The second time is to install CS V1.2.... Using the patch only requires you to update it without having to go through Uninstalling CS V1.0....

Personally Installing CS V1.0 first then renaming the EXE located in your Data Folder, and Then installing CS V1.2 is better because you can use eathier version at any point.....

The Newest version of Oblivion is 1.2 ....once you update Oblivion you cant open Oblivion.ESM inside CS V1.0 so naturally CS V1.2 is required to mod Oblivion.....CS V1.0 is used to create lip sync files because CS V1.2's "Generate .lip" button is Unusable.....

Naturally Something must be used to replace Oblivion.ESM to allow Usage of CS V1.0 so that you can Create Lip Files.....Which you can get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13742....Read the Description It's there for a reason

Alright I have to ask a question in this thread.
If the .lip file generator was broken during the "upgrade" from v1.0 to v1.2 of the Oblivion Construction Set then what was fixed in the "upgrade?"

it updated internal files for the patched Oblivion.esm and the SI Oblivion.esm. And of of made it so mods from the old could not work on the new and vice versa.

Why would they make it incompatible with mods made using the previous Oblivion Construction Set?

Mod for old version mostly works with newer version(Think about ever popular Ren's Beauty Pack), but not vice versa.

I don't think it was intentional. LFact is right though, most mods made with the old CS will work with the latest Oblvion.
