Unable to launch game in Full Screen Mode.

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 9:32 pm

So much to my horror i've been unable to run Fallout 4 in fullscreen on any setting :( my computer is almost brand new with a Nvidia 960M 4GB card so it isn't the specs at fault.

When the initial options menu pop up before the game launches, it doesn't seem to matter what graphics settings I cycle through, if it's windowed it runs fine (boarderless and non-boarderless) but when I click run full screen I get a blank screen with the little windows mouse cursor icon doing the loading animation. After waiting a good period of time I try clicking around the screen to see if it's still responsive and the game window greys over and I have to force the program to end.

I did manage to get it to start full screen once and the sound started playing but was left with a flickering screen flashing in and out of the beginning credits and all the keys were non-functional. Had to Ctrl Alt Delete to get back to the desktop.

I'm running a Lenovo Y50 with Win 8.1. All drivers up to date. Steam copy of the game.

Tried Windows hotkey combination for full screen which is Alt+Enter, no luck.

Real frustrating as the game only takes up 1/3rd of the screen so it's hard to play!

Please fix it soon! :'( :'(

Yeah, i can use both windows boardered and boarderless, but not full screen so im stuck with fallout only covering 1/3rd of the screen, almost unplayable on a laptop screen. Plus theres no option to resize it in windowed mode.

Is there maybe a way to resize the windowed mode to make it bigger? While we wait for a fix?

No fix yet :( I've managed to make the window slightly bigger by starting in windowed mode and dropping the desktop resolution, makes it a more playable size but it's no fix.

No words from Bethesda? I don't want to play on windowed mode (like other games I get stuttering, input lag and bad frame pacing) but it's the only option for me!
So basically I can't play the game till this fullscreen bug is fixed.
Please do something, you got my money.
If you need more info please ask (I have a laptop with an i7 4702mq and a maxwell gtx 850m).

I have the same issue not being able to run outside of windowed mode. Even in windowed mode, I am getting the CTD caused by the 358.91 - WHQL driver having a serious error and recovering. I have tried using the beta version, various screen resolutions in windowed mode, as well as rolling back the driver and trying the 2nd most recent available. All are giving me the same results. I am using a similar machine to others reported here:

To use fullscreen go to Nvidia Geforce Experience, Scan for games, click Fallout 4,

scroll down to resolution. set desired resolution and set display moder to Borderless.

worked for me.

My laptop: GTX 880M, i7 2.6, 8GB RAM on win 8.1.

The game works great in windowed mode 16:10 on high details.

in full screen mode I can see a black screen only. The game starts, but it doesn't work - it's unplayable!!!

I have the latest drivers too.

Even the Witcher 3 works great with high details...

Does Bethesda have some solution?

Same thing happening to me with my Y50, except I have an AMD card. Launches and runs fine in windowed, but nothing happens with full screen. An issue with Lenovo?

I have a very similar problem on my MSI GE60, nvidia too. except my problem is that when i launch it in fullscreen it just freeze and i cant open it. i can hold over it on my taskbar and see a black screen. and when i launch in windowed and borderless it runs, but i still cant open it, i can see it loading and [censored] in the miniscreen at the taskbar.

Bethesda should really fix this.

No news? Can someone from Bethesda say something, are they aware of this bug? Are they working on it? Why no official words? I even opened a support ticket through the official channel sending my Dxdiag and detailing the problem, and what I got is an automated response saying to look on these forums -.-
I wait some more hours, but then I have to give a thumb down on steam and metacritic, since this customer support is obscene.

Bump. Same problem for me. The 'fix to select a higher resolution'did not work since my screen resolution is not included in the options to select it. adjusting the falloutPref.Ini file did not fix it. Will post here if I find a fix.

FIXED same issue, levono laptop.

Tried the ini file thing, tried window mode, no fix HOWEVER the following worked for me (second part is probably important part)

I installed all my games in the wrong folder so my Geforce/Nvidia didnt detect the game properly; after scanning the right folder fallout 4 showed up in the nvidia Geforce experience program (you can launch it from the Nvidia folder in program files)

Then I used that program to adjust the wanted resolution and launch it in borderless window mode. Then and this is important: I DID NOT CLICK OPTIONS TO CHECK. So just press play after, if you press options it reverts to the crappy 800x600 or whatever resolution.

So just press play and voila full screen mode.

So to sum up launch the game via Nvidea geforce experience in the wanted settings after launcher launches ONLY press play and have a fun game

Same issue here, I have a GTX960M. Can only run it in windowed borderless mode. GeForece Experience allows selecting 1920x1080, so that's the solution I took. I have the same exact issue with Batman: Arkham Knight, so it seems like this is a common issue among more games than just Fallout 4.

How is that a solution? You are still playing in borderless windowed mode, not fullscreen.

I'm trying to play with my regular desktop, with an Nvidia 980, and I can't play fullscreen. If I select borderless windowed, it works fine, but only at 1080p. I want to play with a higher resolution, and I can't select that.

If I change it to fullscreen, then I can pick a higher resolution, but then the game refuses to launch. Just hangs on a black screen with a spinning blue circle.

FIXED it for me! Most of you will hae tried step one and got it to run in a small window, if so go to step two, if not step one is how i got to run it in a small window

1) update drivers (manually), compatibility mode windows 8 both for the launcher and exe file in the game folder. Find the Fallout4Pref.Ini file in the steamapps/fallout4/fallout4 folder and in the documets/mygames/fallout 4 folder. Find the iSize H=... part.

replace the corresponding lines above and below with :
bMaximizeWindow=0
bBorderless=1
iSize H= 1080 (your wanted resolution mine is 1080)
iSize W=1920 (your wanted resolution mine is 1920)

Launch via steam, go to options (before you press play on the launcher) make sure borderless and windowed mode is checked. dont look at the resolution, we will fix it later
Run it in borderless window mode. You can now run it in a small window right? If not :s

2) Run nvidia geforce experience (found in programfiles x86>nvidia corporations)
3) scan for the game (may need to change the scan-file)
4) adjust setting using the program as wanted
5) press play/launch in the program and the fallout launcher will start
6) press play, DO NOT PRESS OPTIONS, this will revert it back to the crappy 800x600 resolution and you will not be able to select the right resolution/full screen.
7) play full screen
8) cry happy tears
