I must be doing something wrong but I'm unable to get a fusion core loaded into the T-45 power armor by the crashed vertbird. I have 8 fusion cores in my Ammo inventory, but what am I supposed to do to get one loaded??! I can enter the power armor but no fusion core loads. Thank you. John D Hixson

Usually when you try to enter one that has no core in it, it automatically loads. You could try the "transfer" option and load it into its inventory and see what happens.

When I try to select a fusion core from my inventory, I get a cannot equip message. When I try to transfer, my inventory shows empty and I cannot select the fusion core. John D Hixson

OK, my bad! It turns out the objects in my Ammo invertory are fusion cells, not fusion cores. Once I found a fusion core, it loaded just fine automatically just like you said. I guess the fusion cells are for weapons or something. Where I write fusion core in the earlier posts, they are more correctly fusion cells. Thank you. John D Hixson

Fusion cells are ammo for laser weapons.

Ummm... yes, yes they are.

Well technically speaking as well, Fusion Cores can be used for weapons and even AS a weapon as well...
