So, I have a rather strange issue here. I have a DVD of the original game that I played through, and I wanted to play through it again on my new build, so I figured I'd get the GOTY edition. I got the GOTY edition via steam, and for some reason it's not working. On my new build the DVD copy of the original game works just fine, however the GOTY edition through steam is not working correctly. When I load the game, it gets to the menu and everything's fine. When I try to start the game however, the game simply hangs. I've also tried loading my old games through it too. I've disabled all the addons except oblivion.esm and it still does not work.

I've come to the conclusion that the issue is either steam itself or perhaps the game has been corrupted somehow. Had steam check the files for problems, said everything was fine... Like I said, the game works completely fine when installing it and loading it from a DVD.

Technically there is no file named Oblivion.ini. It is the Configuration Settings file simply named Oblivion

Well. It would appear that since I've deleted the oblivion.ini file now neither of them will run. Below are my DXDIAG specifications. I've removed 8GB of system memory for nonsensical troubleshooting purposes and dropped my clock rate 5%. Oh. Bethesda softworks responded to my tech support request, apparently after telling them the same thing I told them, they decided I was getting BSODs and random lock ups and hardware failures, and told me the issue is with my computer being a multi-core system. So, to humor their wisdom, I decided to bind the affinity of the application to a single processing core, which of course was to no avail. So, I've decided not to waste my time with them anymore.

I beleive that this issue was propogated when I decided to install the game via steam, which immediately updated my DirectX as I was attempting to run it the other day. Of course, I was not at all enthralled by this, and wish there was a way to disable directx being automatically updated through steam, because I never update my system's drivers unless something is not within working order. So, in order to counter this update, I installed AMD's new ATI 5850 Radeon Display Drivers, which did not help any. I also tried to manually download the full June 2010 DirectX SDK through microsoft and it also did not solve my problem.

So. At this point i'm stumped. Any suggestions? Below is my DXdiag file.

Edit: Also, I wanted to mention, since the issues I've tried swapping pairs of 8GB memory and whatever, and dropping my clock rate 5%. I'm fully convinced my issue is software related. Edit of Edit: I also wanted to mention that when I start the launcher, it drops all my settings to very low and a resolution of 640x480. Of course, I've tried to run it that way and it was obviously not happy with those settings either. Reset them to normal settings since.

This is normal and nothing to worry about.



If you get that setting in the Oblivion launcher just exit the launcher and run it again into the game menu.
From the option menu configure the game setup and exit to Windows. Try now to launch Oblivion and if that worked than stop. Good luck.

Issue is not that my game keeps changing itself back to default settings. Issue is that the game will get to the main screen menu, and the moment I i start a new game or load one it freezes completely.

So, after you deleted the oblivion.ini, has the non-steam install started working? Or does it also crash and burn?

Where is steam installed? What you might try, is turning off UAC in the steam folder, and make sure it also effects all subfolders.

It does not start either way now, and I can't configure the old install to work now. Steam is installed c:/steam. Shouldn't affect anything. All other games on my system run just fine. The game gets to the main screen, when it let's you select load new credits settings etc. After i press new or select a game to load it just crashes. The game is crashing without any error codes. It's like it just gets to a point and refuses to work at all.

Under normal circumstances, I would say missing master crash...... Do you have any mods installed on either one?

You are going to have some difficulty with the two installs, unless steam has its own spot to store saves, and such, otherwise, they are both going to want to use the same folder for the ini, saves, etc.

First uninstall your regular oblivion version (backup your saves if you want)

Then clear your registry of the oblivion/ bethdesa / and (i hope not) secu-rom data

Then do the following :

C:-> users -> your username -> my docs - > my games - > delete entire oblivion folder (DO NOT completely erase yet)

then go to

C-> users-> your username- > appdata (note this folder is hidden, if you cant see it type the address manually or learn how to enable hidden folders in windows (its under tools-> folder options) - > local - >

now you should see a folder named oblivion , delete that, and delete any securom (should also be hidden) folders and bethdesa soft folders. (the oblivion folder contains dlc plugin list etc)


Now try the steam version again.

Deleted everything. Uninstalled DVD copy, reinstalled steam install, deleted all registries, backed up saved games, deleted .ini's, etc. Started fresh, same problem. No mods installed, except for those that come with GOTY edition. Tried running with just oblivion.esm, no luck. Any other ideas?

Did you delete the oblivion folder in appdata -> local? If so then move on to next step:

When the game crashes ( you said it freezes) do you get a "this program has stopped responding: check online for solution / close program" from windows? If you do then windows will log the crash event (after you click close program) and you should be able to give us the info. To do this go to control panel-> administrative tools -> event viewer then look for "windows log on left hand side and click application

Find a big yellow sign with a black "!" (should be the most recent) and give me the details.

Unfortunately the game does not crash, or have any error. It simply hangs when I try to load or start a game. I'll try to do a few hundred things to try to coax it into giving me some sort of message. At the moment away from PC.
