UNAR - Unique Armours Retextured

+ Updated 2010-08-14, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10375 +

Tired of the generic armours Bethesda tries to pass off as unique items? This mod changes 26 34 armour and clothing items that previously used standard models and textures into something truly unique, and places them in the world.
I've tried my best to make unique items that fit still into the FO3 world, and I'm reasonably happy with how it's turned out. Some items I'm happier with than others, but that's to be expected. :)

There are still a lot of items on the to-do list, so please come with suggestions!

+ Images and descriptions +

"Finished": (They're never finished)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/MysteriousSuit.jpg
Where does it come from? Nobody knows.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/TalonCombatArmor.jpg
Sleeved combat armour, in Talon Company colours.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/EnvironmentSuit.jpg
Up-armoured military rad-suit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/DefenderArmor.jpg
Taking a cue from the raiders, one wasteland mercenary has apparently decided to significantly up-armour his leather outfit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/DoctorLisOutfit.jpg
Dr Li is a classy lady, but she's also sensible enough to wear a labcoat when working around dangerous chemicals. The outfits are also available without the coat.
The dress also comes separately, and both versions have male variants of course.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/DoctorLisOutfit.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/All-PurposeScienceSuit.jpg
The Enclave has recognized the need for more radiation protection for exploration teams, and has reinforced one of their protective suits.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/CommandoArmor.jpg
Sometimes, long sleeves are just too darn hot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/WanderersLeatherArmor.jpg
A repaired leather armour, with both arms intact. Complete with pip-boy on/off meshes and dismemberment.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/RoadRascalLeatherArmor.jpg
Mesh is a mix of the RobCo jumpsuit and the Tunnel Snake leather jacket. Logo is originally from an unused Raider graffiti image, but is subject to change if I get a better idea.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/RoadRascalLeatherArmor.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/CompositeReconArmor.jpg
Representing composite materials in Fo3 isn't easy, realistically it should just be a flat colour (or painted), but that's no fun so I went with a carbon fibre look. I wanted to add an icon to the shoulderpads, since it's an option unused in vanilla, but the existing BoS icons are way too bright for a sneaky character. Instead I used the icon for the Texas Brotherhood of Steel in a dark blue tone. If a fluff explanation is needed one could assume that a recon squad was working their way up the coast. Or, just ignore it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/LindensOutcastPowerArmor.jpg
I've wanted to do a modified mesh for Linden's power armour since I started the project, but I haven't been able to until now. I figure his armour should be pretty torn up, since he was attacked by deathclaws. but he would have repaired it with available materials. In the capitol wasteland resources are limited, but traffic signs seem pretty common, so he just bolted some on there to cover missing and damaged armour.
I did consider using wood, since he's a treeminder, but I felt an ex-BoS would have more faith in steel if he could get it. Also weathered an outcast helmet to match,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/Pre-WarDressUniform.jpg
Pre-war suit with a look not entirely dissimilar from circa WW2 dress/Service uniforms. Rank on sleeves, US badge on collar (though the texture quality is too low for actual letters). A few areas where patches have been removed.

Shady Hat (image above)
Simple recolour of the standard hat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/VancesLongcoatOutfit.jpg
Black/grey re-tex for a more sombre look. Gold buttons.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/PrototypeMedicPowerArmor.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/ArmyPowerArmor.jpg
Both suits use the same basic skin, an OD colour similar to other army equipment in FO3. The Army suit keeps the original army shoulder badge, but the medic suit has a white cross instead. There's also a matching helmet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/ModifiedUtilityJumpsuit.jpg
Modified model based on the regular utility suit with the belt from the armoured vault suit. Leather parts are recoloured to better match the leather shoes and forearms of the vault suit.

Lucky Shades (image above)
Lucky clover leafs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/MercVenturersOutfit.jpg
Leather recoloured, shirt recoloured and with new texture for the cloth. Spurs on female version removed, but steel toe-caps added instead.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/MercCasualOutfit.jpg
Simple recolour, black trousers and light grey shirt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/ShellshockedCombatArmor.jpg
Canadian (almost unused) camouflage on the armour, helmet is changed into a visored helmet based on the vault security helmet to tie into the explosive theme of the name. Also added gloves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/BadAttitudeArmor.jpg
Does not actually exist in-game as an object, like most other unused uniques. Patterned after one of BA Baracus's outfits.

Boogeyman's Hood (image above)
Great for scaring small children.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/Hand-Me-DownRaiderArmor.jpg
Please note that the helmet is an original Bethesda skin, but unused. I did not make it.
Severed hands and some of the spikes on the armour removed to make it look a little simpler, like newbie armour.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/ApocalypseGladiatorArmor.jpg
Removed various spikes and added armour for the stomach and back for a more sensible look. I use the female helmet for both genders, it's clearly some sort of vehicle crew helmet that's been repurposed.

Description
===========
Changes the look of several armour and clothing items, and places them around the wasteland if necessary.

Location
========
All around the wasteland.

Details
=======
This mod adds new skins to several previously generic-looking "unique" armour and clothing items, giving them a truly unique look. Stats have not been changed in this version, but the items are placed in-game if they were unavailable before.

Files are included for compatibility with both unmodded "Vanilla" Fallout 3, and for those using FO3 Wanderers Edition.
FWE already places some of the unused uniques in-game through it's implementation of MUAC and the effects and placement from that mod has been retained, only the cosmetic changes from UNAR are used.

The changed items include:

Wanderer's Leather Armor
Road Rascal Leather Armor
Composite Recon Armor
Ledoux's Hockey Mask
Linden's Outcast Power Armor & helmet
Pre-War Dress Uniform
Vance's Longcoat Outfit
Prototype Medic Power Armor, Army Power Armor & Helmet
Modified Utility Jumpsuit
Lucky Shades
Shady Hat
Merc Venturer's Outfit
Merc Casual Outfit
Shellshocked Combat Armor and helmet
Unique Raider Badlands Armour
Hand-Me-Down Raider Armor
Boogeyman's Hood
Hot Lips Mask
Apocalypse Gladiator Armor & Helmet.

Nice work Tubal . . . it's always good seeing a nice ReLz thread. And thanks for making an FWE compatiblity patch too!

My vote for the next retext's are the Composite Recon armor and the commando armor.

Cheers!

Using the female metal helmet mesh for both really looks great. It almost looks like an Imperial Gallic helmet to me, further complimenting the whole Roman look.

Too bad the leather armour skin is almost impossible to work with.
I have some ideas though, but I'll see if I can make it work before I post anything.

The male model (motorcycle helmet) looks atrocious, so tossing it could only be an improvement. Also, it saves work. ;)

So if I use FWE do I use both the Vanilla and FWE versions or just the FWE version?

Does the FWE version replace the vanilla one or only add to it?

Anything about load order would be very helpful. I think I recall you talking about it in another thread stating it should be loaded early, but where FOMM placed the vanilla version cannot be right (before other esm files).

thanks

Only use one ESP.

The FOMM installer will take care of load order and ESP activation. That the vanilla esp is placed right after the Fallout.esm isn't a problem, since other ESM's are always read before ESP's. The only reason I can think of for moving it is if you have another mod that you want UNAR to override. The same goes for the FWE version. It might not be aesthetically pleasing to have it between the main FWE ESP and the optional ones, but it's the surest way I could think of to ensure an easy and problem-free installation.
I should probably put a note in the readme about it though, since it's not a standard behaviour.

If there are problems with the installer that I haven't though about I wouldn't mind hearing about it.

Bit of a breakthrough http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/MeshMerge01.jpg. Managed to successfully put the Tunnel Snake jacket on RobCo jumpsuit legs, with functioning dismemberment etc. I've been a bit frustrated since so far I've only been able to remove parts, like the severed hands on the Raider Sadist suit, but I could never add. This opens up a lot of new options since I can now borrow parts and merge models ? la Tailor Maid, and maybe even model a few things of my own.

I'm open for suggestions. :)

Right now the skin is just the existing Outcast skin (although I think I have a texture replacer in the screenshot), with the standard traffic sign texture on the new parts. I want to rework it a little for clarity and efficiency, especially if I add burlap, and the armour needs more scratches.

Edit: Feels like I'm spamming my own thread here, but since NO ONE ELSE IS POSTING:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/WanderersLeather02.jpg. I'll probably use it for the Wanderer's Leathers. It's a bit ironic since the Wanderer is patterned after Mad Max, but I can't very well replace the vanilla leathers, can I?

Still no suggestions for me? Come on, I've even started modelling!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/Tubal/F3/WanderersLeather03.jpg
A repaired leather armour, with both arms intact. The image shows the male version, but the female suit is also modified. It took a bit longer than I expected since I had to make dismemberment caps and pip-boy on/off meshes.

I'll try to get my version of Linden's armour to work, then I'll put together a new release.

Okay I have some suggestions.

Environment Suit: Something along the lines of http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/e/eb/FOT_Environmental_Armour.png would be cool. Basically taking various armored parts of armors and slapping them together. You could do something similar for the All Purpose Science Suit, just splice some enclave armor parts unto it.

Enclave Shocktrooper Helm/Armor: The same color scheme, but a minimalistic approach to the armored parts. Smooth, rounded shoulder plates, a smooth, layered plated abdomen (similar to the unique Metal Armor you made,) smoothed leg plates with no visible pistons/shock absorber things on the side, and eliminate the tubes around the neck. For the helmet, you could take of the "pointy ear things" and if possible make the eye ports into a solid visor or a one eye thing.

"Robo-Thor" Tesla Armor: Something similar to http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/4/4c/FoT_Tesla_Armor_large.png would be really cool, I think.

Armoured rad-suits? Not a bad idea. It's an empty niche in Fo3, which is surprising given the setting. ;)

I'm concentrating on finalizing the WiPs at the moment. Got to get them out of the door or it will never happen.

Yeah I just wanted to throw you some suggestions, I didn't want you to feel like you weren't getting any love with your mod. I too was a pursuer of unique uniques and I like to see a fellow pursuer realize his goal. Keep on it, and kudos to making it FWE compatible. I use the FWE version of UNAR and it's awesome. So, keep up the good work!

A lot of new items in the new version, and I changed the Modified Utility Suit mesh into a mix of the regular utility suit and the belt from the armoured vault suit.

FWE or vanilla compatible.

I can think of 4 main ways to put new items into the game:
  • Using a new NPC or corpse.
  • An existing NPC or corpse.
  • Putting them in cells or worldspaces.
  • Adding an item to a merchant (non-respawning).
  • Changing existing quest rewards.

So far I've mostly used 1-3, and a little bit of 5 (to add Linden's helmet to the reward that gives you his armour). Using existing NPC's is of course dangerous from a compatibility perspective, but on average it should work out fine, and it adds to the variety of the NPC's too. Adding them to merchants, possibly by putting them on a shelf ready to be stolen or bought, would work for some items, but less well for others (Moira isn't likely to stock modified Enclave equipment).
What is the best way?

Pre-existing items are of course not placed again. Some of the "uniques" are already quite common actually, a lot of Megaton settlers are already wearing the unique Grunt outfit, I didn't do that.

Another issue is whether I should alter their stats and effects. So far I haven't touched them other than cosmetically, but the more I get into modelling the more the items won't match the stats they have, especially not their vanilla stats, and the FWE-integrated MUAC effects don't always match my vision of the items.

Hey, how do I get Linden's helm if I already got his Armor before upgrading?

EDIT:

1: Yes
2: The latter
3: Yes
4: Maybe
5: Yes, but there are disadvantages (see above)

EDIT2: You could change the stats, sure, but there should most likely be separate modded stats for FWE balancing and vanilla.

player.additem XX011218 1

:)

Yeah, editing quest rewards has it's drawbacks, but when it comes to some items it's unavoidable. It's luckily very few items that are both rewards and has a companion item I need to add. I can only think of Linden's helmet, and Reilly's Rangers combat helmet if I add it to their reward.

Stats would naturally be adjusted for the FWE version, which is partly the problem... I want it to be balanced for both versions.
