Unarmed fighting

Post » Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:53 pm

Well for some have speculated, people now think skills are seperated into 1 and 2 handed skills.- speculation

This makes me question wether it will be categrized int these skills or still be its own skill.
But since we all usually have 2 hands it will probably be under this category.
Then again if you were to cut both arms off an oponent, wouldn't he also be 'unarmed'?

I hope we start to see more areas where weapons are not allowed, say certain taverns, organizations, guilds, or halls.
It would make me think all that unarmed training had its little 'perks.' Just to have an edge on people not trained in unarmed who is also not armed.
Any ideas on how to better unarmed combat?

Grappling, strangling

I hope we have some nice unarmed stealth kill neck snaps or choking.

Edit: Sorry for all those typos, my keyboard is starting to fall apart somehow.

The unarmed combat usefulness, depends of the unavalability of weapons in certain situations and the need of defeating someone without killing.

Agree with all said so far. Maybe even just making unarmed combat more interesting could be worth it (like adding kicks and more things to do with your hands other than punching). Also it could actually imo be improved by not being a skill, just something you can do in as you say, pub fights, tournaments etc.

I think at least adding kicks or something would help a lot... But I also think hand-to-hand fighting has always been a bit ambivalent. I never really got whether it was supposed to be a brawler like skill, or a more stealthy kind (like a bard, monk, or a pilgrim) of thing to do... As a brawler thing, it actually works quite well I think, although it ought to have a more "persuading" sort of aspect to it. Like a persuasion skill for barbarians :) "You won't tell me what I want? Then I'll kick your [censored] until you do!"

If it was to be a more stealth friendly skill (monks etc.), the ability to strangle someone from behind would be a really cool addition. Then I might actually consider using that skill, as I never do now... :toughninja:

Well as most know, melee skills have been put into 1 and 2 handed weaponry.

Do we actually know this? Or is it just speculation? I haven't read the GI, and the lettering in the scans is too small. I got the impression that it was all speculation...
Can I have a source?

Otherwise, yes. I like your ideas. In unarmes fighting, I've always wanted strangling and choking also. I think some other good idea would be kicking and other martial arts-esque moves.

Thats what I've heard, but your probably right since I got this from 2nd hand information.

But I keep hearing from people that blade/blunt are not skills and have been replaced with 1 and 2 handed weapon skills. So I'm not sure where unarmed is categorized.

Stuff like stunning blows and trips to immobilize your enemy would be nice.

I'd love a combat system that includes unarmed fighting even in armed fights. I don't just mean punching the enemy in the face with the left, I mean actually having fighting maneuvers result in the loss of the weapon, the combatants falling to the ground and ending the fight in a struggle that'd be based on this skill. I mean, in just about every action movie, a gunfight somehow manages to turn into a spectacular hand-to-hand situation. But hollywood aside, even Fechtbücher quite often show unarmed combat as a major part in armed duels.

Implement it in bar fights (or in Arena fights?), as means of persuasion, make it like Dark Messiah :toughninja:  , and put in thresholds that determine whether you're simply knocking one out for a while or you're beating him to death and put in special moves that do both of these. And, yeah indeed, Fisto! :bunny:

Mulitple hand-to-hand fighting styles would be nice, but alas with a game such as the elder scrolls is(with magic, sword+shield, blunt, etc.) the last thing I expect, is the devs to focus too much time and effort into deepening unarmed melee combat. But again, it would be nice, perhaps each race could have a specific fighting style unique to them. Obviously a Nord should fight significantly different than a Bosmer or a Khajiiti.

Finally though, somthing simple like a wider array of available attacks, including grapples and throws, would be a nice touch.

Edit: also(and this could work for weapons combat as well) the gameworld could have a number of books hidden throughout the land that teach you new attacks and maneuvers that your character could then add to his repertoire when in combat. Kind of like books that raise your level in a specific skill, only these ones would give you something that you could actually use in combat to your advantage and help make each players game experience that much more unique.

I might be the only one, but I think kicks and the like would look daffy as hell in first person. Maybe a frontward stomp to "push" an enemy back to serve the same function as a shield bash, but past that I simply can't see it. I also agree there should be more incentive to use unarmed in towns, maybe have the player character have to pass guard checkpoints before entering towns, surrendering your weapons like in the Casinos in New Vegas. That way, stealth characters would have to use some serious wits to assassinate targets in towns.

Earlier, I would say that those were features from fallout 1 and 2 and so it won't be included in Skyrim, but seing that they have add perks...

That is totally made up. Complete speculation. And I hope it doesn't turn out to be true.

Hand-to-hand should be FAST.

Even if you're just holding a dagger, more weight = slower than less weight. Your bare fists should always be the fastest attack in the game.

I don't realistically expect a mix of martial arts styles, but simply having truly quick jabs, punishing reverse punches, and maybe unppercuts/elbows/kicks would add a lot.

Well they HAVE told us that there are finishing moves, so that may mean some for the unarmed types as well. Nothing like cheetah palming a guys nose to his brain to take him out.

Even say three fighting stances/styles would be plenty. Something heavy-duty, something nimble, and something inbetween. Rather than assigning to race I think you should be able to learn whatever style you like in-game from a trainer or from finding books. To begin with, you may start with perhaps two basic moves of the style that best suits your race.

These three styles could determine how you use weapons as well.

All in a perfect world.

Edit: Oh yes, a disarming move and a "take hostage" move would be great - with or without a weapon.

I'm pretty sure Todd said the main combat animator is a martial artist who has real fights in the ring. In the studio tour video.

Unarmed would be great if you knocked people out, instead of killing them. This would be cool for playing a thIef/mugger character.
