Underground Railway Lines and Fallout 4

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 1:09 am

Hi,

Ill frame this first.

Im not from Boston (Or American). One of the main modes of transport I used when playing FO3 was the underground rail tunnels scattered through the DC area. Not only did you find some interesting people/locations but some of the trap patterns were also very deadly.

Does Boston have a similar extensive underground railway system as DC? (ie whats it got now/their timeline).

I must admit I havnt seen much evidence of anything like that in the previews Ive seen) so it did get me wondering.

I was always disappointed that some lines in FO3 were not electrified. Some of the stations still had power so i thought some ahole raider might of tried to run a current on them/down them to screw with unwelcome visitors.

A lot of major cities here in the US have a metro system but the Boston metro isn't as prominent/well known as DC's or say, New York.

Personally, I would like for the Institute to have gotten the metro back up and running, if it was ever down. I think it would be cool to ride a train between important destinations.

I've only been to Boston a couple of times and it's been several years since the last time I was there, but according to Wikipedia the Big Dig was finished in '07.

Whats the Big Dig?

oh Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig

20 years! wow.

This isnt a huge thing to me. I just enjoyed navigating the pretty samey looking tunnels looking for interesting things to see. Generally it was a bonanza for Wonderglue and scrap metal down there!

EDIT: Also I liked the moans/groans you heard from the Ghouls down there and the telltale glow of the Glowing Ones in that Darkened Tunnel. Good atmosphere.

Yeah, I loved the metro in DC. It's even cooler if you've been to it in person to see how accurate everything actually is. I really hope Fallout 4 has something that will enthrall me just as the DC metro did. Fingers crossed!

I really hope there is some kind of underground tube line of some description in fo4. I loved exploring the ones in fo3, so dam spooky. I was assuming that clip we saw at e3, where he blows the raiders head off with a teddy bear, that looked underground-ish

Whilst Ive been to Washington it never even occured to me to compare what I was seeing with what was in FO3. I was staying in Arlington not far from that big assed shopping centre complex (big to me, Im Australian everything over there was bigger). It was also near that DEA Museum (which was quite interesting). No Pentagon tours though :(

The Pentagon can be kind of difficult to get into. I'm Active Duty military and am not allowed inside the building without having someone escort me in.

Yeah they said after the attack that there were no tours scheduled after that. Apparently it was on code red? Black ? still and wont come outta that until 2022? Then tours will restart. Maybe.

The Bus driver I had was pretty scathing on the lack of tours as he said they were a good tourist draw

I've actually lived in the northern Va area just south of DC for several decades so the whole capital wasteland was quite fascinating to me. I'm not familiar with Boston but I'm sure it will still be interesting.

I fact, my nephew from Maine is coming to visit and wants the "Fallout 3 tour of the DC area".

Yeah, after 9/11 we were at an elevated FPCON (force protection condition) for awhile but it eventually dropped to FPCON Alpha which is the second lowest level. But because of ISIS we elevated to FPCON Bravo a couple of months ago and have stayed at this elevated level ever since.

Alexandria VA? I'm down in Virginia Beach and have several friends up at the Bethesda Naval Hospital so I visit the DC area fairly often.

One of the things I really liked about the Metro in Fallout 3 was how you were required to go through it to travers most of downtown DC. I don't see how they would incorporate something mandatory like that for Boston however.

I was in DC about June of 2014. I use those Blue/Red Bus Tours that do loops to see most of DC. It was the tour guide on there who told us about the Tourist lockout. He said one of the reasons there is so much security there is the sheer amount of people who do still go there expecting there to be tours happening!

Boston does have a subway system. Its called the "T". It runs underground and above ground. I believe the green line was the first subway system in america. Heres a link to the MBTA map of the trains.

I think in-game in Fallout 3 it was said somewhere DC's metro rivaled Philadelphia's, New York's and Boston's underground subways. Remember, this isn't our world it's a world that has developed differently, although similarly since the late 1940s plus an extra 260 years...

Yeah I wasnt looking for exact sizes or anything and Im not expecting (this way is BLOCKED BY RUBBLE RUBBLE) so you must use the underground train line as we got to visit Vault Tech HQ etc. It was kinda like forced railroading :).

I just found exploring the tunnels interesting, and always getting hit by baseball traps!

Subways in FO3 were interesting, I think FO4 will have even better ones.

If not a subway system, hopefully the game has a HUGE explorable sewer system. Like in F:NV, but much larger.

Boston certainly has a subway... and I am hoping beyond hope that there is a cookie in there of a ghoul or skeleton called 'Charlie'. For those of you who don't remember there once was a very popular song by the Kingston Trio called "Charlie and the MTA" which was about a man forever trapped on the train because he didn't have enough fare to get off. In the song there are a lot of references to stations/locations where the train stops.

I am pretty sure there is a shot of one of the stations in the E3 video

All you would ever want to know about Boston Mass transit (RL of course): http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/

It is much more expansive than the DC system and the Big Dig added a lot of verticality to the possible level / map designs.

I think I used to take the Orange Line from outside the city and connect to the Green Line everyday when I worked in Boston about 30 years ago.

I hope I remember Boston enough to pick out places in the game. I worked at computer store on Boylston St, and used to go down to Chinatown a lot.

It will be great to see Fenway and I hope the Boston Garden is there.

When I was a kid we used to go down to Va Beach every summer.

Anyway, it was kind of fun to see the games take on " the fields we know". The DC metro had that slightly familiar but not quite right creepy feeling. I like the general environment and hope to see it improved for 4. Sounds like it a pretty well developed one in RL.

As a Boston area native I can tell you we most certainly do have a subway system; it's infamously underfunded and overworked. But ya, it's probably a safe bet to guess there will be subway tunnels in Fallout 4.

It's inclusion of Boston's 'T' in Fallout 4 in some manner seems inevitable.

I rode it once visiting the city, the tunnels are a lot wider than London's underground (which I know best).

oh, and getting a 'foot long dog' at Fenway Park has to be replaced with some other suspect foodstuff :D
