Underwater and Swimming Animations Look Really Bad

Post » Sun Sep 25, 2011 8:03 am

Ok so every person who's been to a hands-on gaming convention and got to see these two things have never had anything good to say about them. They've been described as "worse than Fallout" as well as "8/10 on the ugly meter." I too have seen swimming in some PAX footage and I couldn't agree more. Why have Bethesda ignored such a big part of their game? We know they've added subaquatic dungeons and puzzles so what's the deal with this? It seems to me like they've taken the same system from Oblivion and done little to nothing to improve it. This is not that hard a mechanic to work out yet it appears as if it has been given barely any attention. Every animation I've seen so far looks great except for this one. This one is just down right horrible. Didn't like it five years ago; absolutely hate it now.

Here's just a quote on how going underwater is from one of our fellow forum members:

You know how in Fallout you can rest the camer directly on water level and see everything clear as day underwater, but if you go under there's a green tint? Exactly like that in this; although the shift is actually more noticeable, that 'clear as day' thing is visible every single time you dive, looks incredibly ugly - I just hope thats one thing they're workig on still. On the surface the water looks good, but the ripples are the exact same as in Fallout. At one point I also saw the 'shimmering' from the sun pop in on the water, as though it's a texture.

Sure it may not be pretty, but it gets the job done.

Let's be honest here for a second, who on Earth swims in 3rd person? I have NEVER swam in 3rd person in any TES game, it's just clumsy and you can't see anything.

A complete non-issue for me.

If you want to go swimming go find a pool kid. I would rather have my water look nice and natural.......... swimming....

The actual water itself has been described as beautiful on all accounts anyway. Plus.......Alpha build.

Me. Always.

Al. Pha. Build.

It's going to be released in less than two months. Not much they can do to change it now.

wat

The map has many rivers and lakes as well as one giant body of water. Not to mention all the submerged dungeons. We're going to be swimming a lot.

If you want to go swimming go find a pool kid.

What? That's got to be the saddest rebuttal to a complaint I've ever seen. Not even kidding.

The actual water itself has been described as beautiful on all accounts anyway.

I think it looks amazing... when no one's in it.

It's an alpha build. Because in the finished version of the game, there won't be any water at all!

I do hope your not expecting every single thing in terms of graphics to be upgraded in terms of quality.. what you see now is what you will get when it goes gold, Alpha build or not.

Oblivion had bigger, more bodies of water... swimming, especially underwater parts were greatly in the minority.

Al. Pha. Build.

2,5 years to fix animations & underwater already for Skyrim. 10 years to fix underwater issue for TES entirely.
Water is not made in the last few months of the game, it's made at the start.

Alpha build is a bad argument in this case. We simply have to accept the fact that some things will be plain bad and ugly.

One question..... does it look better than Oblivion in general? does it run better or worse than Oblivion? I can live with Oblivion's quality but nothing worse

Pretty annoying, but then this is Bethesda who fail at animation just be glad the other animations look as good as they do. It will probably take them another 10 years before they manage swimming and ladders, 20 before they fix rain clipping.
